The Fading Light
The Fading Light
Chapter Eighty-One: The Fading Light
Aldrich moved like a man who had lost his mind. Like a man who had nothing left to lose.
He tore at the rubble with his bare hands, rocks slicing into his palms, blood dripping down his wrists.
He didn't feel it…He couldn't feel anything except the panic clawing up his throat.
Behind him, the others dug too, throwing their weight against boulders that wouldn't budge but the rocks weren't just fallen…they were sealed and magically reinforced.
Every second they wasted, the silver glow around Aiden grew brighter, and Aiden himself grew dimmer.
"AIDEN!" Aldrich's scream echoed through the cavern, raw and desperate. "HOLD ON! I'M COMING! DON'T YOU DARE LEAVE ME!"
He threw a boulder twice his size. Then another. His hands were shredded, but he didn't stop…he just couldn't stop.
Grants slammed his fist against the stone, his magic flickering uselessly. "The rocks are reinforced with his magic! We can't break through with pure strength! It's not working!"
"Then we burn through!" Merrick shoved against a slab, desperation making his voice crack. "Elliot! That fire sample we took from the cores…can we use it? Can we make it explode?"
Elliot's hands shook as he ripped through his bag. "I... maybe? It's highly unstable! If I destabilize it further, it could bring the whole cave down on top of us!"
Prince spun around, his face pale as death. He pointed past them. "LOOK AT HIM! HE'S FADING! DO IT! NOW!"
Everyone looked.
Aiden was barely visible through the silver light, a silhouette crumpling to his knees.
The glow around him pulsed like a heartbeat…but it wasn't his heartbeat anymore. It was Baki's…Feeding…Draining.
Fiona grabbed Elliot's shoulders and shoved him forward. "Everyone get behind me! Cover your faces! Elliot, on my count!"
Elliot's hands trembled as he held the crystal. "THREE... TWO... ONE…"
He threw it.
The explosion was deafening. Heat blasted through the cavern, and for a moment, the world was just noise and light.
When the smoke cleared, the magical seal was gone. Rubble scattered everywhere.
The team poured through.
"AIDEN!" Aldrich ran faster than he'd ever run in his life.
Faster than should be possible for anyone. He didn't see the smaller monsters darting at him. Didn't feel them claw at his arms…he just ran.
Behind him, Grants grabbed Prince. "Party's over, rock-face! Prince, with me! Keep him busy!"
"WITH PLEASURE!" Prince shifted mid-stride, teeth bared.
Baki snarled, his ritual interrupted, silver light sputtering like a dying flame. "NO! I WAS ALMOST DONE! THE HARVEST WAS INCOMPLETE!"
Aldrich reached Aiden just as the stone crumbled to dust.
He caught him before he hit the ground, pulling him into his arms, holding him so tight it hurt.
"I've got you." Aldrich's voice broke. "I've got you, love. I'm here. I'm right here. I'm not letting go."
Aiden's eyes fluttered open, but they were dull. Dim. Like candles burned down to nothing.
His hand lifted weakly, barely able to touch Aldrich's cheek.
"The baby..." His voice was a thread, so thin Aldrich had to lean in to hear. "Aldrich... is the baby... still...?"
Aldrich looked at him. Really looked.
Aiden's face, once so full of light and laughter, was gaunt. Hollow. Dark circles swallowed his eyes. He looked like he'd aged years in minutes.
Aldrich's heart didn't just break. It shattered into a million pieces, and each piece cut him from the inside.
"You're both going to be fine." He pressed his forehead to Aiden's, tears dripping onto pale skin. "I promise. I promise. Just stay with me. Please. Just stay."
Grants and Prince fought like demons, but Baki was too strong, too connected to the mountain.
"We can't kill him!" Grants yelled over his shoulder, dodging a swipe of stone claws. "He's too linked to this place! The whole mountain would come down!"
Prince barely ducked a stone spike aimed at his chest. "Then we GO! NOW! Aldrich, MOVE!"
Fiona threw up a shimmering shield, the magic crackling as it absorbed blow after blow. "Go, go, GO! I'll hold the rear!"
Merrick grabbed Elliot's arm and dragged him toward the stairs. "Elliot, RUN!"
They ran…All of them, back toward the spiraling staircase, back toward the surface, back toward anything that wasn't this nightmare.
Behind them, Baki didn't follow. He just stood there, watching them flee, a terrible satisfaction twisting his cracked face.
"Run, little flames! Run back to your nest!" His laughter echoed, dark and echoing. "I have what I needed! The seed is planted! The harvest may be incomplete, but it is ENOUGH!"
Aldrich didn't look back. He held Aiden against his chest, feeling how terrifyingly light he'd become.
Aiden used to feel solid. Real. Now he felt like he might float away if Aldrich loosened his grip.
"He's getting weak," Aldrich choked out, his voice breaking. "He's getting so weak."
In the magma pool behind them, the giant golem shifted. One enormous eye cracked open, glowing with a sickly, familiar light…silver-gold, corrupted, wrong.
Fiona glanced back just once. Her face went white. "Oh no... oh no, no, no... He used Aiden's energy. The golem is... it's ALIVE."
"I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE GOLEM!" Aldrich's roar was primal, desperate. "I CARE ABOUT HIM! KEEP MOVING!"
So they kept moving.
Hours later, the mansion was silent.
Not the good kind of silent, where everyone was asleep and peaceful.
The bad kind…The kind where no one dared to speak because speaking would make it real.
They laid Aiden on the bed, but even that felt wrong. He barely made a dent in the mattress. He was so small and so fragile now.
Gabriella took one look at her son and gasped. Her hand flew to her mouth.
Aiden, who had always been soft and glowing and alive, looked like a ghost. His cheeks were hollow, sunk in. Dark circles bruised the skin under his eyes. His lips were pale, cracked.
Gabriella whirled on Aldrich, her eyes blazing with a mother's fury. "You were supposed to PROTECT him, ALDRICH!"
Aldrich couldn't meet her eyes. He just bowed his head, shoulders shaking. "I'm sorry." His voice was barely a whisper. "I'm so sorry."
Gabriella wanted to scream more…wanted to break something but then she looked back at Aiden, at the faint rise and fall of his chest, and the anger crumbled into grief.
The swell of Aiden's stomach…once firm and round with new life…was smaller now. Less pronounced and beneath the skin, a faint, sickly silver light pulsed.
The baby was still there, but the life force was weak, fading and dying.
Elliot worked frantically, surrounded by equipment and magical mirrors that reflected his own terrified face back at him.
"The baby can't survive outside the womb yet. But staying inside Aiden... it's draining what's left of him."
His hands wouldn't stop shaking. "The Baki's magic is still attached. Still feeding. I need to isolate them. Separate Aiden from the parasitic energy without separating him from the baby."
Gabriella gripped the edge of the table. "Can you do that?"
"I have an idea." Elliot's voice was tight, strained. "A glass shield. Powered by reflective magic…mirrors. If I can create a contained environment that reflects energy back inward, it might trap what's left of their life force inside and keep the Baki's draining magic out. But..."
He looked up. His face was pale as paper.
"BUT WHAT, Elliot?" Fiona's voice cracked with impatience, with fear.
Elliot swallowed hard. "It means Aiden will be conscious. Aware. Trapped in a glass cocoon, watching, while his body tries to sustain the pregnancy and the birth will come early. Weeks early. Maybe days and when it does..." He couldn't finish. The words lodged in his throat like stones.
No one made him finish. They all knew.
Hours later, Aiden floated in a glass cylinder rose from floor to ceiling, filled with a soft golden liquid that hummed with Elliot's technology and ancient mirror magic.
Aiden hung suspended inside, his eyes open, watching. His hand pressed against the glass.
On the outside, Aldrich pressed his hand to the same spot. Their palms aligned, separated by an inch of enchanted barrier.
Tubes snaked into Aiden's arms, monitoring his fading heartbeat. The silver glow in his stomach pulsed weakly, like a dying star.
Aldrich leaned forward, pressing his forehead against the cool glass.
Tears streamed down his face, dripping onto the floor. His voice was a broken whisper, meant only for Aiden.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I was supposed to protect you. I was supposed to keep you safe."
Inside the cylinder, Aiden's lips moved. No sound came through, but Aldrich read the words.
‘Not your fault. Save our baby.’
Gabriella stood behind them, clutching River so tight the boy didn't complain. She stared at her son, floating like a specimen, and her voice was hollow. "Elliot... how long does he have?"
Elliot stared at the readings. His hands shook the way they always did when he was terrified. "The baby will be viable for early delivery in... two weeks. Maybe less."
He swallowed, hard. "But Aiden's body... the strain of an accelerated pregnancy, combined with what was stolen from him... his heart might not survive the birth."
He looked up, and his eyes were wet.
"The chances of him making it through are... they're not good."
The words hung in the air like a death sentence.
The Seer appeared in the doorway, her ancient eyes reflecting the glass cylinder, reflecting Aiden's pale form.
When she spoke, her voice echoed with something older than the mansion, older than any of them.
"The Moon Child walks between worlds now. Between life and death. Between this realm and the next. The birth will be his greatest trial."
She paused, and when she continued, her voice was softer. Sad. "And it may also be his last."
Aiden floated in his glass cocoon, pale and thin, one hand resting on the diminished swell of his stomach. His eyes were still open, still watching Aldrich.
Aldrich sank to the floor beside the cylinder. He didn't move to the chair.
He didn't reach for food or water or sleep. He just sat there, one hand still pressed to the glass, holding vigil over the love of his life.
Outside the window, on the far horizon, Mount Obsidian pulsed.
A slow, rhythmic glow…a heartbeat of fire and stone.
Matching the weakening pulse of the baby within Aiden.
Two weeks…Maybe less…One life to save another.
But at what cost?
