Curious mind
Curious mind
Hillary's POV
I couldn't concentrate. I just paused like a movie under control. The screen in front of me was blurred as my eyes were fixed on the spreadsheet I was working on. My mind wasn't settled at work today. All I could think of was what Travis said.
Marry me .
Two simple words. But it felt like a hammer in my stomach, draining and making me feel uneasy. I was excited but confused and scared. Of course I love Travis. More than anything…. but…. What's a good marriage without approval from parents? I let out a frustrated sigh and shook the thoughts of my mind. There was a lot of work today. Deadlines, reports I had to meet up to, for Travis. I took a very deep breath and continued on my desk when Travis passed by. My breath hitched and I gulped. Others just maintained themselves, as usual. They felt he was grumpy. This was also something that felt weird. Pretending to see him as a normal Boss In front of colleagues but while we're alone, we were something.
My heart raced when I saw that he saw me. He was supposed to look away or something but he was heading towards my direction. I cleared my throat and he leaned over.
“Hey, watsup?”
He winked and I swear, I wanted to kiss him hard right now. I'm pretty sure the rest would find it awkward:his presence.
“What are you doing here?” I whispered. “You're not supposed to be here.”
“Just wanted to compliment you..you look so beautiful.”
I rolled my eyes. “Of course you saw me in the morning so go now.” I whined and he smiled but then, moved away, adjusted his suit and cleared his throat.
“Hillary, I want the report in less than thirty minutes.”
Now that was loud enough for colleagues to hear.
“Okay…” I faked an angry look.. “Sir….” I completed. He walked away and I couldn't help but smile. My smile faded as I continued to think about his proposal. I brushed my thoughts away to focus on work but each time I tried, it just melted away. Something was killing my joy. Well, the little I had. Elena and Travis walked around. Yeah, it was business but who knows what's really going on? She didn't seem very interested in him but what if he's interested in her.
“Jesus Christ.!” I suddenly yelled.
Realizing I got everyone's attention on the seat, I covered my mouth.
“Hey, you okay?” I heard them ask in concern.
“Yes..I….I …I'm good. Sorry about that. It's nothing.” I confirmed and they carried on with their work..
Jeez. They couldn't. I mean Travis won't. He only said they're business partners and nothing else ... .I shifted my hands from the mouse and leaned back on my chair.
What if I sneaked up just to sneak on them, eavesdrop or something? But I felt like it would be weird because obviously, it's bad to do so.
Curiosity kills the cat anyways. I gulped and ran my hands through my face. It's only business Hillary. He loves you. She's only a business partner. I inhaled and exhaled.
But …. His parents, emphasis on his stupid Dad. Sorry Travis…. His Dad wants her for him. So how could there be any possible way that she doesn't have feelings for him or admires him somehow or something.
“Oh no.” I mumbled.. I need to go check this out. I stood up from my seat and walked away from the sector but changed my mind again. No. I have to focus on work. I pulled the chair and sat. But frowned again.
Don't you want to know what's going on in there?
The voice sparked up again and I pushed my chair back. Turned to go but turned again. I was confused and now it was getting awkward.
But I shouldn't care. I shouldn't worry because he promised to marry me. So that shouldn't be a problem for me. Right? But then again, he was good at keeping things professional when it suited him. Maybe that was part of his game and this was the right time for me to check it out. I immediately print out the report, gathering and arranging them together. I walked out and took the stairs. I was in the hallway and each step felt like one to hell. The report was pressed against my stomach and I stood in front of his door. My heart pounds. I could hear them discussing but not Audible. I looked back and forth ensuring no one was hanging around, then leaned towards the door to place my ears.
Footsteps made me jolt in fear and I maintained myself immediately, pretending to search through the files in my hand. I couldn't afford to get caught like this. A man passed by. When he had disappeared, I pressed my ears back to the door and heard something from Travis' mouth.
“We've always had good chemistry. Elena.”
My mouth fell open like taking off the lid of a cup. Did I just hear that right or….that was a joke. I scoffed. Travis liked her right? You asshole Travis. I sulked and pressed my body and ears back to the door. Enough evidence would make me give enough words to use against him.
Suddenly, I felt my body leaning forward. Before I could react, the door had swung open and I gasped, stumbling into his office.
Noooooooooo.
My heel twisted and my balance, disorganized. I still caught a glimpse of Travis before falling. It happened all too fast, sudden, quickly. Whatever, the papers had slipped from my hands and I crashed right on the floor.
Shame, embarrassment, regret, disgrace. Everything defined this ugly situation I found myself into. I grit my teeth in shame, still refusing to look up.
Travis would know that I sneaked up. It was very obvious.
Was it?
“Baby…are you okay?” I saw his shoes first before I managed to look at him.
Baby?
