Chapter 182 Ten million dollars
Chapter 182 Ten million dollars
Rhys's POV
My breath caught sharply. “So fast?”
“Patient 324!”
I turned around and hurried into the lab. “I'm here.”
The woman gave me another once over before handing me a brown envelope. “Your test report.”
“Thank you.” I muttered under my breath, taking the test report from him.
My hands shook slightly as it clenched around the envelope. I've been receiving a lot of brown envelopes these days that I found myself so anxious to open this one.
I dragged my feet out of the lab room and slumped into a lobby chair. At worst, Zane would just be my brother on a piece of paper or because our blood is kind of the same and at least, he would be nothing more than an annoying teammate.
I wanted to open the envelope so badly to see the contents but my fingers refused to move.
When I finally gathered all the courage and opened up the envelope, Mark's voice rang out before I could bring out the documents inside.
“Here you are and I've been searching the whole hospital for you.” He hissed, breathing heavily.
I folded the envelope. “You could have just called.”
“Oh, you don't know how much I tried. There seems to be a very bad network in the hospital.” Mark said, taking the seat next to me.
His eyes caught the envelope and he reached for it. “Another brown envelope? What does the content say this time?”
I got to my feet, hiding the envelope behind me. “Nothing serious you have to worry about.”
His brows arched. “Nothing serious? And you are hiding it behind your back? And you are spelling out your words? If you want to lie, Rhys, do that to someone that doesn't know your habits.”
I clenched my jaw. Most times I hated the fact that I spent more than ten years with Mark. He knows every last of my habit so well that anyone might think we are dating.
“Believe whatever you want.” I said, turning away from him.
He jerked to his feet. “What's that? Clare's test report? Or her father's test report?”
“Both.” I replied without thinking. At least, that would keep him away.
He reached for it again but I stepped back. “Let me see. Is their ailment severe? Do they have to be flown out of the country?”
“This is my girlfriend's family's problems. You should steer clear of it.” I shunned him away.
“Girlfriend's family's problems?” He repeated with a snicker. “You talk as if you are among her family members.”
“I'm her boyfriend.” I reminded him.
He nodded. “And I'm your best friend.”
A nurse stopped in front of me before I could reply to Mark, panting heavily. “You know Miss Clare Voss, right?”
My heart stuttered. “Yes, is there any problem?”
“Follow me!” The nurse yelled, already running.
I shoved the envelope into Mark's hand without thinking. “Stay here and wait for me.”
“Okay, I'll… wait, I want to come too.” He shouted.
His footsteps echoed after mine and I didn't even care to turn around. We pushed our way through the very busy hallway and arrived at the doctor's office.
The way the doctor paced around told me it wasn't any good news.
“Doctor, they are here.” The nurse announced our entrance.
The doctor scanned me over for a few seconds before letting out a deep breath. “I shouldn't be telling you this. The patient didn't entrust you as her guardian but I can't watch my patient die.”
My heart dropped into my stomach. “Please, speak plainly.”
“I've contacted her family and none of them are ready to pick up. Her father's hospital card can only pay for one person's surgery and she had signed up for her father's upcoming surgery with it.” The doctor continued.
“Doctor, you are still speaking in circles.” Mark said, his breath heavy.
The doctor inhaled deeply. “Miss Clare's eye condition has a very high chance of being treated but she has to make a deposit first.”
“How much?” I asked, my voice unsteady.
“Ten million.” The doctor replied.
I released the breath I didn't know I was holding. I still had more than ten million in my account so that wouldn't be a problem.
“Where should I make the deposit?” I asked further.
The doctor turned towards the nurse. “Take them to the front desk.” He shifted his gaze back to me. “Make the payment as fast as possible and come sign the surgery consent form.”
I nodded and followed the nurse out. We arrived in front of the front desk a few minutes later. I quickly brought out my card and handed it to the woman behind the counter.
“I want to pay for Miss Clare Voss's surgery. Ten million dollars.” I explained.
The woman nodded and after entering some documents into her computer, she swiped my card. A deep frown appeared on her face the next second.
“There's no money in the card.”
I chuckled, my voice coming out hoarse. “Please check again, ma'am.”
The woman tried again but her reply was the same thing. My fingers trembled slightly as I brought out my phone and opened my bank account.
My blood ran cold when strange words stared back at me. “Dear Rhys Calloway, we are sorry for any inconvenience this is going to cause but your account has been frozen. This might be due to a fraudulent activity or suspicious pattern detected on your account. If you think this might be a mistake, you can always stop by our back or call our customer care. We would be glad to help you.”
The words looked like a joke for half a second before I finally understood it. My jaw tightened, this has to do with my father, he just wants me to come groveling at his feet.
Mark handed the woman his card. “Please, make use of this.”
The woman swiped the card and a few seconds later, he handed Mark both the cards and a white paper. “Take it to the doctor in charge.”
“Thank you.” Mark said, patting my shoulder. He handed me the card and the paper.
“Thank you.” I forced the words out of my throat.
“Don't mention, the most important thing right now is saving Clare. We would get even with your father when all these are all over.” He assured me.
