Chapter 125 - Game On

“We should keep up,” Jasmine swirled.

Jack slackens his pace. It has been a hectic long day and he needed to catch his breath. It’s over three days since they left Lisa after she refused to help them get back to the human world with her tremendous magical powers.

“I need to rest.” Jack leans on a fig tree panting slowly.

Walking through the woods in the land of the dead can be dangerous, especially in dark hours. Sounds saturate the woods around them -- insects buzz, frogs yelp, birds and bats click. Screeching owls added to the cacophony of spooky sounds they could hear.

It’s dark and they had no source of light with them. They only have the moon to guide their path.

The moon peeped through the fig tree leaves and faintly lit up the dark path ahead.

Jasmine cast a terrified glance at Jack and whispered in a frightened voice, “It’s not safe to stop and rest.”

“Not when I’m losing my breath,” Jack mutters.

If only Lisa agreed to help them, they won’t be journeying in the land of the dead by now looking for a way home. But here they are still stuck in this terrifying place.

“It’s not safe my love,” Jasmine insisted. She cast a wide-eyed gaze on Jack. Of course, they have been on the walk for close to an hour but stopping now won’t make it any better. “We need to go now,” she whispered in a terrified voice.

Jack took a deep breath and glanced at Jasmine, “You are right, we should keep going,” he said.

He’s done taking chances after he was separated from Jasmine by Osai. Nevertheless, he was supposed to be leading on this journey. Lisa directed Jack to the mountain of Isle. ‘That’s the safest place you could be,’ she told him.

Lisa still cares for him and wanted to be part of his life. But with Jasmine around Jack, that’s not going to happen. The least Lisa could do is to get Jack to safety by directing him to the mountain of Isle.

“How much further do we have to go?” Jack glances at Jasmine. He isn’t good at navigating. If Jasmine has heard stories about the land of the dead, this makes her the perfect person to lead the way.

“Not quite sure.”

Jasmine narrowed her eyes and focuses her gaze on the path ahead. She had no idea of how much further they needed to walk before getting to the mountain of Isle. She too is a stranger in the land of the dead.

“Then we should stop and rest if we don’t know how much further we needed to go.” Jack slowed down; he couldn’t continue without knowing how much further they needed to walk. His body is already weak and needed to rest his muscles.

Jasmine couldn’t get Jack to keep walking. She felt sorry for him when he saw him leaning against a fig tree while gasping for breath. “Alright my dear, let’s rest for…”

Jasmine’s words were pushed back to her dry throat. She caught a glimpse of a pale-looking figure standing next to a tree beside the one Jack was leaning on. The creature stared down at her with its humongous half-green eyes.

She swallowed a lump in her throat and spoke in a quivering voice. “Jack… the whisperer is… here.”

Jack who was first gasping for breath suddenly regained strength as one that has forgotten his stress. He flicked around. “Oh boy!” he cried out. The humongous half-green eyes of the whisperer terrified him. He didn’t like seeing creatures with such eyes.

Before Jasmine and Jack could realize what was happening, four more whisperers emerged out of the treacherous darkness and surrounded them. The creatures displayed their12cm long and curvy claws on their faces.

With their eyes on their victims, they hissed and snarled at the same time. They were marking their prey to make sure they didn’t escape their fury.

“What should we do?” Jack whispered.

“We fight like always,” Jasmine whispered too. She’s not letting the whisperers get on their way to the mountain of Isle. This isn’t the time to run from the whisperers. It's either they face them or they keep stalking them.

With her hand-stretched, her demon’s blade appeared in her hand. She snickered under her breath and hops into the air targeting one of the whisperers.

Jack didn’t want to leave Jasmine all by herself to take on the whisperer. As his demon’s blade mysterious appeared in his right hand, he pounced on one of the whisperers and headed to its heart.

The demon’s blade could kill anything supernatural especially when it pierced through the heart of the being or creature; although some creatures and beings have proven to be immune to the demon’s blade.

Before Jack could impale the creature’s heart with his demon’s blade, he was blasted off the creature with a wind blast. The wind blast took him unaware.

Jasmine lost her focus as she flicked around to know where the blast was coming from; she was flung to the the blast can’t come come from the whisperers. Whisperers don’t cast spells nor do they use some elements to fight.

Jack dragged himself to his feet and quickly ran to help his wife Jasmine up.

“You two have been so hard for me to find,” said a voice that sounded like the rushing of multiple waterfalls.

Jasmine and Jack focus their gaze on the path ahead only to make a profile of a being riding on a pale dark horse. They couldn’t see the face of the being because the being was clothed in a dark flowing hooded robe. In the hand of the being was a scythe.
