Chapter 463 Courage Pt 2
Chapter 463 Courage Pt 2
AMELIA
Blood splatters on my face. His blood. I look, but turn away quickly. I can't bring myself to look at the damage, but I feel ten times lighter. A weight has lifted off my shoulders. I drop Devon's gun and I run my fingers through my hair. He picks it up and shoves it back in his pocket, his eyes on me. "How do you feel?"
Relieved, I think. "Nothing," I say.
"Good. Don't allow this to haunt you. Remember, you did the right thing." I couldn't have done this without him, but I don't say it. I can hardly believe what just happened. I did it. I pulled the trigger. I made a promise to myself and I saw it through.
Ash Rockford is dead.
I ask him, "What now?"
"I guess this is where we say goodbye," he says, glancing at his watch. He bends over and picks up the duffel bag. I failed to notice earlier that he had gloves on. "I'm leaving you now. I should add that this is the last time we'll ever see each other."
I frown. I don't see where he's going with this. I cannot believe that he's doing this to me. I don't have a clue of what to do next. "You're going to leave me here by myself? Have you lost your mind? What am I supposed to do?"
"You didn't think I was going to stick around, did you?" he asks incredulously. "Why do you think I didn't kill him myself? No one will go after you when they find out you pulled the trigger. You're a Keller, remember? You've got power. Who am I? Nobody. A walking dead man."
I can't help but stare at him in complete disbelief. "You're really leaving me here?"
"I should've left by now." He finally looks at my face. "You're going to be alright, Amelia. Nothing is going to happen to you. Your husband will ensure your safety."
I look down at my body. My dress is red, so I can't see the blood. But my arms are dotted with it. I can't begin to imagine how my face must look like. Ash is dead behind me, strapped to a chair. "But how do I leave? Where do I go? Everyone will see me."
"Clean up," he says. "You didn't touch anything, did you? Either way, everyone will know you did it. They won't involve the police when they find out it's you, so don't worry about it. Oh, and this would be the perfect time for Damien to come back from the dead."
I shake my head. "What?"
"I can't stay," he says, glancing at his watch again. "I'm going to miss my flight. You'll figure out what to do."
He walks briskly towards the door. I stop myself from going after him. He reaches the door, then he turns around abruptly and just stares at me. He opens his mouth, then closes it, then opens it again. "You know, we never stood a chance, Amelia," he says, his grip on the door handle tightening. He looks away and says, "Or maybe we did. In any case, we didn't let ourselves take it, but even that isn't true, is it?"
I would like to say that I'm confused and that I have no idea of what he's talking about, but I'd be lying. I don't want to have this conversation with him with Ash dead bleeding on the carpet behind me and when he's abandoning me here, but I feel like this is the last time we'll ever get the chance to address this. "What happened was a mistake." And it was a million years ago too. I slept with him because I was bitterly disappointed and jealous and immature. I wasn't attracted to him. I was once, but not at that point. Not anymore.
"I handed you to Damien on a silver platter," he says, then chuckles. "If I hadn't, you'd be mine. And I've got to live with that."
"You had no control over what happened between Damien and me," I say firmly. "It just happened. We fell in love."
"No," he says with a shake of his head. "No. I did. It was my fear of commitment that caused this. I could've easily seduced you. I know you were in love with me. You loved me your whole life."
I look away, ashamed. "I was just a kid. I didn't know anything about you. I admired you because you were always there for me. It was different. My love for you was childish and pure. Innocent. This conversation isn't going to take us anywhere, Devon. It's in the past."
"It won't," he agrees. "I just thought you should know."
He leaves the room and it feels too big all of a sudden. I still can't bring myself to look at Ash, but I have to think quickly. My phone is in the other room. That means I'll have to get out of here. There's the risk that someone might see me, but it's a risk I'm going to have to take. I grab my panties on the way out, and the gun. I can't leave any evidence behind.
I'm so glad my room is right next door.
I don't see anyone, thankfully. Not even Devon. He's gone for good, this time I think he means it. I enter my room and get to work. I have my clothes from earlier, which is a small blessing. I get out of the dress and wash my arms in the sink. I glance at the mirror and my face is covered in blood. I wash it all off with soap. I scrub until my face burns. The water is scalding, but it's the only way I'll feel clean. When I'm done, I return to the room and immediately reach for my phone. It's in my handbag. There are numerous phone calls from Theo, but I ignore them all.
I call Roger.
He'll know what to do.
