Chapter 60 Chapter 59
Alpha king Kieran.
Staring at my reflection once more, my lips drawn into a thin line, I could barely register the joyous occasion that was going on outside the chambers, my mind filled with memories of a not-so distant past. Weakling. Failure. Those are the words my father had called me. I gritted my teeth, shaking my head as I wore my crown, grabbing my scepter and walking out of my chambers.
Heading to the arena where the festival would be taking place, flanked by guards, I kept my gaze straight ahead till I reached the huge doors that were pushed open at my arrival. Everyone in attendance immediately stood to their feet, except for the Alpha king's who were in attendance, all bowing my head.
My gaze wandered among the crowed and settled on someone. The person was no other than Evelyn. Beautiful and dressed in a more beautiful clothing, she stood among the crowd. She exuded an aura of enchantment that transcended her status. I forced down the emotions that threatened to erupt, focusing on the task at hand.
I proceeded to the grand arena, the throngs of people watching my every step. I reached the enormous torch at the center and, with a controlled flourish, ignited it. The flames danced in response, their intensity heralding the Moon Goddess festival's official commencement.
"To the Moon goddess!!!" I bellowed, my voice resounding in the entire arena.
The crowd erupted into a collective chant: "To the Moon Goddess! To the Moon Goddess!" The joy of the festivities was palpable, the realm's worries momentarily forgotten in the allure of this celestial night.
My eyes strayed toward Evelyn once more, a promise unspoken and a revelation to come. As the Moon Goddess festival unfolded, the world awaited a transformation that could change everything.
Amaris.
After the Alpha King's pronouncement, the festival began and cheers and jubilations resounded in the whole arena.
The Moon Goddess festival was in full swing, and the palace grounds were alive with the sounds of laughter, music, and the clinking of glasses. People from all corners of the kingdom had gathered to celebrate, their faces adorned with joy and excitement. The air was filled with the tantalizing aroma of delicious food, and the night sky sparkled with the light of a thousand lanterns.
I stood at the edge of the bustling arena, taking in the vibrant scene before me. The festival had been a long-awaited event, and I couldn't help but feel a surge of happiness as I watched the people around me immerse themselves in the festivities. Couples twirled on the dance floor, their laughter echoing through the night, while others gathered around tables, sharing stories and raising their glasses in celebration.
As I scanned the crowd, my eyes landed on Evelyn, her radiant smile lighting up the night. She looked stunning in her flowing gown, her hair cascading down her shoulders in loose curls. I made my way towards her, weaving through the throngs of people, my heart swelling with anticipation.
Evelyn!" I called out, my voice barely audible over the lively music. She turned towards me, her eyes sparkling with delight.
"Amaris!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with warmth. "Isn't this festival incredible?"
I nodded, a wide grin spreading across my face. "It truly is. I can't believe how much effort has been put into making this night unforgettable."
Evelyn's eyes twinkled mischievously. "And have you been enjoying yourself, Amaris?"
"I have! What about you?!" I asked and she grinned, glancing around.
"Likewise. Everyone seems really happy tonight and besides, things like this only happen once a year. We should make the most of it." She said and I nodded, agreeing with her. Evelyn's gaze shifted, and she leaned in closer, her voice lowering. "Speaking of enjoying oneself, have you seen Duke Ethan around?"
I glanced around, scanning the crowd for any sign of him. "No, I haven't. He's been busy with his duties, guarding the kingdom. But he assured me that we'll have a chance to see each other before the end of the festival."
Evelyn's face lit up and a relieved smile spread across her face. She was truly happy for me and Duke Ethan. "I'm glad to hear that. You deserve happiness, Amaris."
As we continued to chat, I couldn't help but notice the Alpha King, Kieran, seating on his throne, his gaze distant and withdrawn. It was a stark contrast to the vibrant atmosphere of the festival, and a pang of concern tugged at my heart. I leaned closer to Evelyn, lowering my voice.
"Have you noticed the Alpha King? He seems... different tonight. Almost as if he's not noticing the festivities happening around him." I said.
Evelyn looked up at him and a look of concern crossed her face but she blinked and it was gone. "I have no idea why he would be like that, it is the Moon goddess festival after all. Why are you telling me this?"
I shrugged, glancing at him once more. "I don't know, I just thought maybe you knew something. It's so unlike him."
She laughed but it had no mirth. "He's always this way, Amaris. You shouldn't let it bother you so much." She said but even she didn't seem to believe her own words.
I glanced at him once more, taking in his detached demeanor. "I can't help but wonder if it's the weight of his loss, the absence of his mate. The festival won't be the same for him without her." I blurted out but realized my blunder so I quickly turned to Evelyn, alarmed.
"I'm so sorry, I didn't mean..." I began, but she cut me off.
"It's okay. She's my sister. I miss her everyday. She was his mate, it's only natural he misses her." She replied, her voice calm, though there was a bleakness in her eyes.
I nodded, my mind filled with empathy for the Alpha King. Losing a mate or someone really close to you was a pain I couldn't fathom, and I could only imagine the grief he must be carrying within him as well as Evelyn.
