Chapter 69 Everyone Is So Strange Today

Chapter 69 Everyone Is So Strange Today

Sophia bolted upright from the bed.

It's over, it's over, it's over!

What do I do, what do I do, what do I do?

Her hands trembling, she opened the chat with Arthur again.

Arthur hadn't replied.

The chat just sat there quietly, like it was dead.

Maybe... he didn't see it?

Sophia thought, clinging to her last shred of hope.

Right, he was injured and needed rest. Maybe he went to sleep right after sending his message and never looked at his phone!

And it's morning now... maybe he's not awake yet?

She glanced at the time. 7:40 AM.

Based on Arthur's usual routine, he should already be up by now, maybe even having breakfast or reading financial news.

But today he was injured, so maybe he'd sleep in a bit...

And given how sharp-tongued Arthur was, if he'd seen it, there's no way he wouldn't have replied.

But who was Arthur?

A work machine with insane self-discipline!

Even injured, he'd never leave messages unread, especially work-related ones.

He'd see it sooner or later!

No! She had to destroy the evidence!

She'd go upstairs right now, and before he saw it, find a way to get his phone and delete that message!

But going to the penthouse first thing in the morning would be really weird...

After thinking it over, Sophia dug out a small strawberry cake from home and headed upstairs.

Sure, bringing cake as an excuse was pretty weird, but it was better than nothing!

Anxiously, she went upstairs.

She stepped out of the elevator, stood in front of that familiar armored door, took three deep breaths, and finally worked up the courage to ring the doorbell.

Andy opened the door.

When Andy saw her, he was clearly stunned, and a somewhat odd expression crossed his face.

Sophia's heart instantly sank.

What did Andy's expression mean?

Arthur couldn't have actually seen it and spread it around, could he?

Sophia grew even more nervous, but had to keep her composure. After great effort, she finally forced out a smile.

"Andy, good morning. Is Mr. Mitchell... home?"

Andy quickly adjusted his expression and stepped aside to let her in.

"Yes, yes, Mr. Mitchell is having breakfast. But Ms. Taylor, why are you here so early?" He looked at Sophia with obvious curiosity.

His look made Sophia even more uneasy.

But she couldn't just admit anything—that would be like confessing without being asked!

After thinking it over, Sophia could only respond vaguely.

"Oh, I... I came to bring Mr. Mitchell a piece of cake."

Sophia kept her head down as she changed into slippers, not daring to look at Andy's face the whole time.

Andy scratched his head, his expression growing even more peculiar.

Didn't George say she just came yesterday? She could have just gone straight to work today, so why come again?

And bringing a small strawberry cake?

First thing in the morning—what secretary goes to her boss's place before work to deliver desserts?

Andy looked at Sophia again. She was keeping her head down, her ears faintly red, gripping the cake box so hard it was almost deformed. He found it even stranger.

Why is Ms. Taylor acting weird today too?

Could something have happened last night that he didn't know about?

Sophia had no idea what Andy was thinking. She only felt his gaze sweeping over her like a searchlight, making her scalp tingle.

She could only bite the bullet and ask, "Andy, why are you staring at me like that today? Is there something on my face..."

"No." Andy snapped out of it and gave Sophia a bright smile.

"I just think everyone today... seems a bit different, you know."

Sophia's internal alarms went off instantly.

"Different how? What do you mean? Explain yourself!"

Andy was startled by Sophia's sudden barrage of questions. For some reason, he felt an inexplicable sense of guilt.

He touched his nose and said quietly, "It's nothing really... just that the boss went out early this morning, don't know what for, and he's in a really good mood. He even praised George's juice."

What???

Really good mood?

He couldn't have actually seen it, could he...

No no no no no...

If he'd seen it, he'd be in a bad mood instead.

After all, as a boss who'd go to great lengths for his employees, being called "baby" by an employee would be a total disgrace.

Because Arthur was good to employees so they'd be loyal to him, not so they'd want to become the boss's wife.

After giving herself this pep talk, Sophia finally managed to calm down a bit.

But as soon as she rounded the entryway, she saw Arthur sitting at the dining table, eating breakfast leisurely.

Almost instantly, Sophia lost her composure again.

Was it too late to run?

Definitely too late.

Because Arthur had already heard the footsteps and was looking up.

The moment their eyes met, Sophia's heart jumped and her steps halted.

Arthur's gaze landed on her face, paused for a second, then slowly moved down to the cake box in her hand.

He set down his spoon, and his lips curved slightly upward.

"Ms. Taylor, good morning."

Sophia stood frozen in place, the hairs on her back standing up.

What was that tone? Had he seen that message or not?

She tried to make her expression look normal and pulled at the corners of her mouth. "Mr. Mitchell, good morning. I... I brought you breakfast."

She lifted the cake box slightly.

"Oh?" Arthur raised an eyebrow, his gaze sweeping over the box before returning to her face. "How thoughtful."

Sophia's brain buzzed.

When had Arthur ever praised her for being thoughtful? It would be a miracle if he didn't make a sarcastic remark!

"No, not really, I just brought it on the way." She walked over reluctantly and placed the cake box on the dining table.

"I thought since you've been eating light these past few days, you might need some sugar..."

Halfway through, even she felt this excuse was too flimsy.

Arthur didn't respond.

He just tilted his head slightly, looking at her with a smile.

That smile made all of Sophia's alarms scream wildly.

When he smiled normally, it was either cold, mocking, or up to no good.

But this smile now... how to put it, it was somewhat... pleased?

Yes, pleased.

Like a well-fed cat looking at a mouse that had delivered itself to his door.

"Thanks." Arthur said, reaching out to pull the cake box toward him and looking down at it. "Strawberry?"

"...Yeah." Sophia's throat felt tight.

"My favorite flavor." Arthur looked up at her, his tone light and airy. "How did Ms. Taylor know?"

Sophia was completely at a loss for words.

She didn't know! She just grabbed it randomly!

But saying that would make it seem even more suspicious!

She could only smile awkwardly.

Arthur suddenly held out his phone. "This cake looks pretty nice. Help me take a few photos."

Sophia didn't understand Arthur's behavior at all, but this was a rare chance to get his phone! So she obediently took the phone!

But when she looked down at the screen, Sophia froze completely.
