Chapter 81 81

Chapter 81 81
ADELINE
“Oh my God, Adeline, are you insane?!” Scarlett wailed, the wounded sound like a banshee crying for her husband. Crimson red blood gushed from an ugly gash in her forearm.
All she needed was a second, just that second was enough for her to grab the nearest piece of glass and before I could say anything or stop her, she sank in into her arm and like a freaking psychopath ran it down in a jagged mess without a sound. The sight of blood was unnerving but seeing how Grayson’s glare immediately softened was worse. I hated her. More than I have ever hated anyone.
“Adeline, what the hell?” Grayson snapped. It took me too long to realize he wasn’t glaring at Scarlett for trying to kill me. No, my dear husband had her pulled tightly to his side while he cradled her like a porcelain doll, right in my face!
The bitch even had the guts to smirk at me. One that said without words, “told you so.”
I would admit that Scarlett’s arm was a mess, a long jagged cut extended from just below her inner elbow down, almost to the point of her wrist. However, mess or not, did he really think I was capable of something so rash?! Was I so screwed up in his thinking that he would actually think I would hurt someone without being provoked?! The worst part was I didn’t even touch the bitch!
“Really?” My voice was cold even to my own ears, ever hurt, resentment, betrayal, took the front seat as I glared at both of them. It’s crazy how you could hate someone and not even know it yourself because while you assume you’re forgiving and letting things go, hatred and resentment creeps up on you slowly till it has your heart in an unrelenting fist, and all you feel is the need to make someone feel just as much pain, if not worse.
The husband of the year finally looked at me, took his time to actually look at the person he was so quick to accuse. “Adeline, I-”
“You really think, I, the one who’s hidden in a corner for her own safety, was the one who did that?” I spat, the judgement in my voice no concern of mine when they deserved every bit of it. He just promised to make things right barely twenty four hours ago!
“What the hell happened here there?” He grunted. The audacity of this man! Uncertainty swirled in his eyes but he made one good choice since the day he was born, he shut the fuck up.
The kitchen was a total mess, glass, spilled fluids and chocolate was all over the place and in the midst of it was Scarlett and I. It was easy to draw a conclusion depending on who you prioritized and from his first words, I knew who that was and it sure as hell wasn’t me.
I was the one dodging glass after glass for the past who knew how long. I was the one who was ordered to get rid of our child. I was the one who kept taking his shit, despite all his broken promises. He would make things right? Finally treat me like the queen I was? Maybe in the next life, because in this one? With what I’d seen and put up with under his roof, Grayson was as clueless as they came.
“Adeline, I didn’t mean it like that, I just- I don’t understand what happened here, help me understand.”
“You don’t understand, but you already picked sides?”
“Adeline this is not about picking sides.” He groaned like I was the problem, like I was the one being unnecessarily difficult. Fine.
“What is it about then?” I flared. It was a struggle getting on my feet, my hand stung painfully, but I hadn’t been hit by anything. Or atleast I thought I hadn’t. Blood seeped slowly from the point where the glass sank into the palm of my hand, dripping onto the floor, like a half open faucet.
“I know you don’t like Scarlett, but this…” he trailed off, his gaze fixed on Scarlett’s self inflicted wound. “…is a bit extreme and I’m sorry, but I can’t allow that.” He finished, like he said something smart. The dumb add couldn’t even see that the glass she’d cut herself with was right beside them.
“Grayson, sorry, Mr Archer,” I gave him a sugar sweet smile I didn’t mean in the slightest, “Pray tell, if I did that to her, why then isn’t the glass right beside me then? And did you in your infinite wisdom-” I was thrusting my hands in the air like a freaking eagle, but I didn’t care how crazy I looked, not anymore, not if the bitch planned to make me appear that way either ways. “Did you stop to consider that maybe, just maybe, she threw the first punch.” I jabbed a thumb towards my bleeding palm, my annoyance grew every second he had that doubtful look on his face.
He went silent, deep in thought and I could finally breathe again, all the air rushing back into my lungs. Finally, some moment of sanity. Maybe he just needed a little knock in the head afterall.
“Gray, it hurts so much. I think I’m starting to feel dizzy. The blood. It’s too much.” Scarlett cried, grabbing Grayson’s arm so tight like a toddler would their favourite parent. Her voice was soft and quiet, I almost believed she wasn’t the demon possessed woman trying to kill me with anything in her path just minutes ago.
“I’m so sorry. Just stay with me. We would get you to the hospital real quick, okay?” Grayson bundled her in his arms, cradling her against his torso like you would a new born baby, like she was so fragile and weak she couldn’t walk on her own.
My blood boiled at the sight. His jumping to absurd conclusions was one thing, but the moment she wrapped her arms around his neck, all I saw was red. Burning hot anger ready to feast on the next victim on its path.
“It doesn’t matter who started it and who didn’t, no one deserves this, with or without provocation.” He spat angrily, the venom in his voice harsh and going for the kill. Scarlett was eating it up, grinning and smirking at me as she snuggled deeper into the crook of his neck, her eyes never leaving mine the entire time.
He barely even looked at me before rushing his bride and her lies out of the kitchen without asking if I was okay, without even stopping to check how deep the cut in my palm was. The entire time it took for him to leave the house, I stilled. Message received. He was hers, had been, would always be and there was nothing I could do to change that, not even carrying his child.
All it took was the sound of his engine gearing up for a fast ride. The waterworks followed without any stop hold. I hated her. I hated him. I hated myself. Why do I always believe him? I swore I was never going to let him deceive me again. All it took was him coming to give me some washed up promise and I fell for it all over again.
I deserved better. So much better. I knew I did. So why was I still stuck here, with him? With a man who didn’t care enough to honour his promises to me? Who would see my bloodied hand and still not only accuse me, but choose a another woman over me, the same woman who stomped on his heart and walked off without looking back.
Tears blurred my vision as I struggled to make my way out of the kitchen. Glass pierced and scraped at my feet, but none of that hurt half as much as Grayson’s betrayal. I should be used to it by now. With him, I never really came first, but I wasn’t, and try as I might, I don’t think I ever would get used to it.
There was only one choice left. I should have taken it a long time ago, but I stupidly believed him. When he said he would make things better, be better, for me and the baby, he was lying once again.
There was only one choice left. I stumbled my way down the hall to my room, leaving a trail of blood with each step, but I was beyond caring. Each step has become more painful than the last, the pool that followed me more footprints than dots by the time I made it to my bathroom.
I didn’t have to rummage around the medicine cabinet for too long before I found it. The pill that would set me free. A tiny white tablet that was supposed to be powerful enough to grant me my freedom.
I thought about it for all of one second. Tossing two pills down my throat, I grabbed a s
mall can of water and emptied out its content into my mouth.
