Chapter 33 Entangled in Trouble
Daisy didn't know whether to laugh or cry. "What do you mean kind-hearted? I had no choice. If he dies there and I was the last person who had contact with him, and I just left him, how am I supposed to explain myself when the police come knocking?"
"I'm already stressed out of my mind, and you're still in the mood to joke around?"
“I’m just trying to help you relax a little,” Shawn chuckled. “Look at you—your face is so pale, like you’ve seen a ghost.”
Daisy couldn't help but smile, instinctively glancing at the back seat.
The man's brow was tightly furrowed. He seemed to have regained some consciousness, occasionally letting out painful groans. His pale face was gradually showing a dangerous flush, and the blood constantly seeping from his abdomen had already stained a large area of the seat red.
"He's lost so much blood. What if he dies before we get to the hospital?" Shawn asked quietly.
"Let's hope not." Daisy said, glancing again at the USB drive attached to the car keys.
Shawn sighed and said nothing further. Soon, the car left the parking lot and merged onto the main road.
Rush hour was over, so there weren't many cars on the road. Shawn drove fast, heading toward the nearest hospital.
Daisy leaned back in the passenger seat with her eyes closed, her mind in chaos. The whole thing felt absurd, like a dream.
"Dais." Shawn suddenly spoke, her voice tense. "That car behind us, I think it's been following us?"
Daisy opened her eyes and checked the rearview mirror. A black modified Mercedes was indeed following them, maintaining a steady distance of about ten meters.
Daisy felt nervous too, swallowing before saying. "Maybe they're just going the same way. Try to lose them."
"Okay." Shawn said, suddenly turning on her signal at the next intersection and turning into a side road.
The black SUV followed them in.
Shawn's expression changed.
She made two more quick turns at the next intersections, but the car kept following at a steady pace.
“We’re screwed. They’re definitely after us. What do we do? Should we just dump this guy?” Shawn asked, tensed.
Daisy gripped the USB drive and bit her lip. "I'm afraid even if we dump him, we won't be able to escape."
Shawn gritted her teeth, her eyes hardening. "You're right. Dais, buckle up and hold on tight. I refuse to believe you can outdrive me!"
Shawn used to be a professional racer. She floored the gas pedal, and the car suddenly accelerated, weaving through traffic.
After a few smooth lane changes and overtakes, they quickly increased the distance between themselves and the Mercedes.
But before they could breathe a sigh of relief, a white van suddenly shot out from an intersection ahead, heading straight for them!
"Watch out!" Daisy screamed.
Shawn reacted instantly, jerking the steering wheel. The car barely avoided the van's front end, tires screeching. The force of the turn threw Daisy against the car door, and the man in the back seat rolled off onto the floor.
"Damn it!" Shawn cursed, struggling to steady the wheel.
Daisy looked back in shock. The van had already turned around and was chasing them again.
Even worse, two more black sedans appeared at the intersection ahead, lined up side by side, blocking their way.
"Who the hell is this guy?!" Shawn's voice was so tense it cracked. She was starting to regret this.
Just then, a pained gasp came from the back seat, followed by a hand suddenly gripping the seat.
Daisy's body jerked. The man had woken up, his hands clutching the seat. In the rearview mirror, his eyes looked like they could devour someone.
"They're coming after us."
"Who are you exactly? Who are these people?" Shawn couldn't help asking.
The man didn’t respond. He simply leaned forward, staring through the windshield at the cars blocking the road ahead.
"You can't get through up front. Turn around now and go through that alley!" the man said in a low voice, his hot breath falling on Daisy's ear, making her shiver.
Her hands were already shaking. With trembling fingers, she pulled out her phone, wanting to call the police.
The man suddenly leaned forward and grabbed her hand. "Want to call the police? When they come, we'll all die."
Though weak, his voice was ruthless.
Daisy's hand froze. She turned to look at him.
The man looked at her coolly, the corner of his mouth curling up as his eyes darkened. “You’d better listen to me.”
Just then, the car jerked to a stop. Shawn bit her lip and angrily pounded the steering wheel.
Her car was completely surrounded, front and back. There was no way out.
Ahead, those cars had stopped. The doors opened, and several men in black got out, walking toward them.
Shawn's hands trembled on the steering wheel, her face deathly pale.
"What do we do?" She looked at the passenger seat.
Daisy took a deep breath, slipped her hand into her pocket, quickly tapped her phone screen a few times, then calmly withdrew her hand.
"Don't panic," she said, her voice calmer than she expected. "Let's see what they want."
The man fell back against the rear seat and closed his eyes.
The men in black had reached the car and knocked on the window.
Shawn rolled down the window, forcing herself to stay calm. "Can I help you?"
The leader was a middle-aged man in a black jacket. He looked at Shawn, then at the man in the back seat, and smiled—unexpectedly warmly.
"Ladies, sorry about this. This person is our boss's guest. There's been a misunderstanding that needs to be cleared up. We need to take him back. Please cooperate."
Shawn opened her mouth to say something, but Daisy pressed her hand and turned to the middle-aged man. "Sure, I found this guy in the parking lot. He held me hostage. Who is he exactly, and who are you people?"
"That's really none of your business, ladies."
The middle-aged man waved his hand dismissively. Two men in suits and sunglasses stepped forward, pulled the injured man out of the car, held him up, and searched him.
The middle-aged man frowned and said. "I wonder if you ladies..."
Before he could finish, Daisy held out the car keys with the USB drive. "Looking for this?"
"Yes, that's it!"
"Don't give it to him!" the injured man suddenly forced out these words from his throat, but it was too late.
The middle-aged man took the USB drive with one hand while pulling a gun from inside his coat with the other. "I'm very sorry, but this matter is very important. I can't guarantee you haven't seen what's on it, so..."
"So I've already uploaded the contents to my email and set it to send automatically. If you kill us, I guarantee the contents will be all over the internet by 2 PM this afternoon." Daisy said, word by word.
The middle-aged man's expression changed instantly.
Of course, the injured man didn't look much better either.
They both looked like they wanted to tear Daisy apart!
