Chapter 34 His the Bennetts Person
Vincent sat by Vanessa, absentmindedly listening to her talk.
She was saying she felt much better now, and the doctors hadn't found anything wrong—just told her to get some rest.
Luna was also by the bedside, helping Vanessa with her porridge.
Vanessa chatted with them while eating. If this were before, Vincent would have listened patiently and said a few supportive words, but right now, he just watched Vanessa eat, not taking in a single word she said.
Thinking about this morning when Daisy got out of the car in anger, it wasn't the first time, but today, something felt off. He felt restless, like something was about to happen.
Soon, he couldn't sit still anymore, and turned to Vanessa, "Get some rest", before walking out with his phone.
As soon as he unlocked his phone to call Daisy, his brow furrowed.
On his phone screen was an emergency distress message Daisy had sent not long ago!
This was a feature Daisy had insisted on installing in his phone when they first got married, saying that if she ever faced danger, she could press a button and he would get the message.
But in six years, that distress button had never lit up once.
Now, a glaring red triangle distress signal appeared on his screen, flashing.
How could something happen at such a coincidental time? Could it just be an accidental touch?
Vincent's mind was a mess, annoyed, he called Daisy back directly, but the call wouldn't go through!
He stared at his phone and let out an irritated breath.
After thinking for a moment, he opened his phone's tracking app and pinpointed Daisy's phone location.
On the screen, a small red dot slowly moved.
He stared at that red dot for a few seconds, his frown deepening.
The location was on the highway, and judging by the direction, it was heading out of the city.
Knowing Daisy, she would never leave the city without saying a word.
Could she really be in trouble?
He returned to the hospital room, troubled. Vanessa could tell something was wrong just by looking at his face. "What's wrong? Did something happen at the company? Why do you suddenly look so upset?"
Vincent put away his phone. "Yeah, I need to go check on it."
Luna grabbed Vincent's arm, pouting. "No, Daddy, stay here with Auntie Vanessa, okay? Auntie Vanessa is sick, she really needs company."
Vincent patted her head, wanting to say something, but then thought better of it. He really didn't want her to worry too, especially since he didn't know what was actually going on. Maybe he was just overthinking?
He changed what he was about to say. "Luna, be good. Stay here with Auntie Vanessa. I'll come back as soon as I'm done, okay?"
Luna let go of his arm looking disappointed. Vanessa said gently, "Drive carefully."
"I will."
Vincent left the hospital room and stood in the hallway for a while, then took out his phone to check that red dot again.
It was still moving, getting farther and farther away.
Vincent quickly walked out of the hospital and got in his car.
Looking at the moving red dot on his phone screen, he started the engine.

"...If you kill us, I guarantee the contents will be all over the internet before 2 PM."
After Daisy said this, the air seemed to freeze.
Even Shawn was looking at her in horror.
She'd been sitting next to Daisy the whole time, so of course she knew Daisy hadn't uploaded anything, and was just stalling for time.
Her heart was racing with panic.
"Little girl, do you know what you're saying?"
Daisy's back was already soaked with cold sweat, but her face showed no emotion. She even lifted her chin slightly, meeting the man's gaze, and forced a smile.
"Of course I know. You can kill me, you can kill my friend, but I don't think you want what's on that USB drive to go public, do you?"
"So put away your gun, and let's talk this through."
The middle-aged man's finger lightly rubbed the trigger, as if considering something.
Shawn nervously gripped the leather seat beneath her.
The man who'd been dragged to the back seat also stared at Daisy. For a moment, all that could be heard was heavy breathing and heartbeats.
The middle-aged man stared at Daisy and let out a cold laugh. "Good, very good."
He put away his gun and waved his hand. "Take them." He also confiscated Daisy and Shawn's phones.
The car drove for a long time, out of the city, up mountain roads. Around noon, it stopped in front of a standalone villa.
The villa was built halfway up the mountain, surrounded by trees, very secluded.
Daisy and Shawn were pushed into the villa and locked in a room on the second floor.
The room had no windows, just a bed, a ceiling light overhead, and nothing else.
The injured man was also thrown in, lying in the corner, face pale, blood still seeping from his abdominal wound.
The door was locked from outside.
Shawn sat down hard on the floor, gasping for breath, her voice almost breaking into tears.
"Oh my god... Dais, are we going to die? I really should have driven faster."
Daisy patted her shoulder. "It's my fault. I shouldn't have gotten you involved in this from the start."
Shawn sighed. "No point talking about that now. Let's see how this guy is doing."
The man was badly hurt, his whole body burning up, but his breathing was getting weaker. His eyes were half-open, half-closed. He looked like he wouldn't make it through the night.
"Who are you exactly? Who are they?" Daisy asked.
The man's lips twitched weakly. "Knowing that... won't do you any good."
"At this point, there's no good or bad anymore," Daisy said. "You dragged us into this, we're about to lose our lives—at least let us die knowing why."
"Exactly!" Shawn said. "What's your name?"
The man was silent for a few seconds, closed his eyes, and slowly spoke a name.
"Marcus Bennett."
Daisy froze. That name—where had she heard it before?
But Shawn suddenly looked up, eyes wide, staring at the man. "Marcus? You're one of the Bennetts? That Bennett family?"
The man didn't answer, he just kept his eyes closed, his breathing slowly fading.
Daisy looked at Shawn. "You know him?"
Shawn bit her lip and whispered in Daisy's ear, "You know... the ones who made their fortune in arms dealing. After old Mr. Bennett passed away, the family went downhill."
Daisy's heart sank. She was starting to understand what kind of trouble she'd gotten herself into.
"He looks like he's dying. What do we do?" Shawn asked quietly.
"At a time like this, you're worried about him?" Daisy closed her eyes and sighed. "We should be thinking about ourselves."
