Chapter 104 The Water Was What He Had Drunk Before
Daisy watched Vincent walk over. Although she was surprised, her expression barely changed.
She looked away and unconsciously reached out to adjust Luna's already neat collar.
After only a couple of touches, Luna grew impatient and ran off. She grabbed Vincent’s hand and called back over her shoulder, “Mom, come on!”
Daisy followed at a slower pace.
Vincent was also walking toward them. Even though his cap was pulled down low, covering most of his face, his height and presence were impossible to ignore.
A few parents nearby had already noticed. A mom in a pink tracksuit came over and quietly asked Daisy, "Is that your husband? He's so handsome."
Daisy smiled slightly, "Yeah, we're getting divorced soon."
The woman froze, then let out an awkward laugh and said nothing more.
Vincent seemed to have heard. He glanced at Daisy but did not comment.
Luna, holding both their hands, was brimming with excitement. “Mom and Dad are both here. We have to win first place today.”
The first event at the sports day was "hree-Legged Race.'
Three people had their legs tied together and had to move from start to finish. The family with the fastest time would win.
In previous years during this activity, it had only been Daisy and Luna. They could not form a full team, so no matter how fast they went, they always lost points.
This time, they finally had all three, and Luna was thrilled. She stood proudly in the middle, with Daisy on the left and Vincent on the right, both tying their legs to Luna's.
"Mom, let's do it like before. Follow my count. One, left foot. Two, right foot.” Luna instructed seriously. “Dad, you have to keep up. Don’t slow us down.”
Vincent chuckled, "Okay."
The whistle blew, and Luna shouted loudly, “One-two, one-two!”
Daisy followed her rhythm, and Vincent cooperated too. The three of them moved in sync, fast and steady.
Around them, some families stumbled and swayed, some rushed forward unevenly, and Luna had inherited that height. One of their steps covered as much ground as two for others.
At this moment, the height advantage was obvious. Both Daisy and Vincent were tall with long legs, and Luna had fully inherited their height genes. One of their steps equaled two steps for others.
They maintained the lead and crossed the finish line first. "Yeah! We won!”
Luna jumped up excitedly, hugging Daisy around the waist before running over to cling to Vincent’s leg.
“Mom, take a picture of me. I want to keep it in my album.”
Daisy pulled out her phone from her pocket, about to take the photo, when Vincent said, “You hold her. I’ll take it and send it to you.”
Daisy paused, then nodded.
She picked up Luna, who wrapped her arms around her neck, smiling with her eyes curved like crescents.
Vincent stepped back a few paces, raised his phone, and aimed it at them.
Sunlight came from the side, falling on Daisy and Luna, coating them with a golden glow.
Daisy's smile was gentle, Luna's smile was bright.
He looked at them through the lens, and the corner of his mouth unconsciously curved up.
Daisy saw him smiling and froze for a moment.
She rarely saw him smile, especially in this kind of setting.
For an instant, she felt strangely unsettled, as though this moment echoed something from long ago. It felt familiar and distant at the same time, stirring something faintly in her chest.
"Done."
After he spoke, Daisy's phone buzzed, but she didn't look at it.
The next event was Musical Chairs.
Chairs were arranged in a circle on the playground, organized by class, with each class divided into 4 groups. Each group had 10 people, with one fewer chair than participants.
When the music played, everyone circled the chairs. When it stopped, they rushed to sit. Whoever failed to get a seat was eliminated.
It was simple enough.
This event only required one family member to participate. Luna grabbed Daisy’s hand, insisting she join.
Daisy glanced at Vincent. He stood to the side, hands in his pockets, showing no intention of participating.
"Okay."
"Dad, remember to take pictures of us!"
Vincent's lips curved slightly.
The music started, and the circle of people began moving.
Luna held Daisy's hand tightly, eyes fixed on the chairs, her little face tense.
As soon as the music stopped, Daisy reacted quickly. She pulled a chair toward her and sat down. Luna was a step too slow. Someone else dragged her chair away, and she fell hard on her bottom.
Her little face immediately fell.
"Mom's mean,” she complained, stamping her foot. “Mom only cared about herself and didn’t help me. I’m not playing with Mom anymore. I want Dad to play with me.”
Vincent sighed helplessly and said, "Alright, then you can swap elimination spots with Mom."
In the next round, Luna learned quickly. Instead of sitting immediately, she grabbed the chair first.
Vincent did the same.
After several rounds, there were fewer and fewer chairs. Those still in the game were all quick on their feet. Unsurprisingly, Luna got eliminated again.
But this time she didn't ask Vincent to give up his spot. Instead, she shouted from the sidelines, "Go Dad! Dad has to win first place!"
Vincent's lips curved. "Don't worry."
Daisy stood nearby, couldn't help but smile too.
When she first saw the list of activities, the school had planned, she thought Vincent would find them boring. She didn't expect him to be so into it.
And being so into it, he finally managed to grab the chair in the final two-person showdown and took first place.
Luna was over the moon, jumping around while hugging Vincent.
“Dad, you’re amazing!”
Vincent smiled and gently pinched her cheek. Instinctively, he looked toward Daisy, but when he saw she was not looking at him, he quickly averted his gaze.
The next event was "Invincible Wheel."
Each family would use newspaper and tape to make a big circle, stand inside it, and roll forward like a tank tread. The first to reach the finish line wins.
This game had a long preparation phase and also tested coordination between family members.
Daisy crouched on the ground, spreading out newspapers one by one and taping them together.
Vincent crouched across from her, helping hold down the edges of the newspaper.
The two faced each other, very close. As they worked, they could even feel each other's breath.
Daisy kept her head down the whole time, and somehow just couldn't bring herself to look up.
"Tape," she said.
Vincent handed her the tape, and when he did, his fingers brushed against her hand.
Daisy's hand trembled slightly. She took the tape and kept working.
Vincent didn't say anything, acting as if nothing had happened, and continued holding down the newspaper.
Beside them, Luna grew impatient. “Hurry up. Everyone else is almost done.”
Daisy quickened her pace.
Once the wheel was ready, the three of them stepped inside. Daisy in front, Vincent behind, and Luna in the middle.
By the time they finished, all three were drenched in sweat.
Daisy fanned herself with her hand, her throat dry as a bone.
She looked around but didn't see anywhere selling water.
"Thirsty?" Vincent suddenly asked.
Daisy nodded and asked, "Did you bring water?"
Vincent had brought a backpack when he came. He pulled the bag over, took out a bottle of water, and handed it to her.
The cap had already been opened. It was a bottle he had been drinking from.
