Chapter 116 His Eyes Darkened Slightly, and His Adam's Apple Moved Gently
Robert sighed and had no choice but to go order food for Alaric first.
When the cafeteria manager heard that Alaric was coming to eat at the cafeteria, he immediately had the kitchen carefully prepare a specially stewed chicken soup and personally brought it to Alaric.
Seeing Cordelia sitting across from Alaric, the cafeteria manager also brought Cordelia a serving of chicken soup.
The cafeteria tables were rectangular four-seaters, with two chairs on each side.
After ordering his own meal, Robert consciously carried his tray and sat down at another table.
With Cordelia and Alaric sitting across from each other, he couldn't possibly sit next to Alaric, much less next to Cordelia.
If he dared to sit next to Cordelia, Alaric would probably eliminate him on the spot.
Cordelia picked up the soup the cafeteria manager had brought over, took a light sip, looked up at Alaric who was eating with his head down, and said calmly.
"Thanks to Mr. Hughes eating at the cafeteria, I never knew the soup here could taste this good."
Without looking up, Alaric replied, "You're welcome."
Cordelia raised an eyebrow and chuckled softly, then put down the soup bowl. "I've already eaten. Take your time."
With that, she stood up.
Alaric looked up at this moment, his gaze falling on Cordelia, his eyes darkening slightly.
"Cordelia, why did you come back to the country?"
His voice was heavy, and when he looked at Cordelia, his deep eyes carried an emotion that was hard to read.
Hearing Alaric's words, Robert felt excited inside, thinking that Alaric was finally taking the first step.
As long as the two of them talked things through, everything would get better.
Cordelia looked at Alaric quietly, her voice calm. "Shouldn't I have come back?"
Alaric nodded expressionlessly. "Right, you shouldn't have come back."
She shouldn't have come back to disturb his peace of mind.
He had already accepted the fact that she and Dominic were together.
But then she came back.
Robert was completely stunned. Seeing the subtle expression on Cordelia's face, he immediately stood up from his chair. "Ms. Stone, no, Mr. Hughes doesn't mean it that way."
Cordelia smiled faintly and looked at Robert. "I really can't hear any other meaning in his words."
Robert looked embarrassed, not knowing how to explain for a moment.
Cordelia didn't want to make things difficult for Robert. She looked away and glanced at Alaric calmly.
"Shadowpine is where I grew up. I should come back."
With that, she left the cafeteria.
Alaric also put down his spoon and left.
Seeing this, Robert could only quickly follow. After getting in the car, he wanted to say something to Alaric, but when he looked up and saw Alaric sitting in the back seat with his eyes closed, he suddenly didn't know how to start.
Over the next few days, Alaric came to the hospital early every morning for his IV drip, then left after having lunch in the cafeteria at noon.
The relationship between Cordelia and Alaric had eased somewhat.
The two sat at the same table to eat, and everyone thought Cordelia and Alaric had gotten back together.
After all, the fact that they were once married wasn't a secret at Sunrise Valley Hospital. Doctors who had worked at Sunrise Valley Hospital for a while all knew about their relationship.
Plus, Cordelia was Ruth's friend, and there were already rumors in the hospital that Sunrise Valley Hospital had been given to Cordelia when she and Alaric divorced, and that Cordelia was actually the real owner behind Sunrise Valley Hospital.
"Luminary Ventures Group's anniversary celebration - did Evelyn ask you to attend?"
Alaric across from her suddenly spoke. Cordelia was caught off guard for a moment.
During this time, although they sat at the same table to eat, they rarely talked.
Cordelia had gotten used to eating quietly.
Hearing Alaric's voice, she didn't react at first, then calmed down and nodded. "She did mention it. This year's Luminary Ventures Group anniversary celebration sounds quite interesting."
Alaric looked at her. "So you're going?"
Cordelia nodded. "Yes."
Alaric's eyes were cold, and he didn't ask anything more.
Two days before Luminary Ventures Group's anniversary event, Evelyn took Cordelia to the mall to choose a dress.
She had already had Amber's dress custom-made, but Cordelia's dress wasn't ready yet.
Cordelia rarely wore formal dresses, and Evelyn couldn't quite figure out what style suited Cordelia, so she simply took Cordelia directly to a luxury brand's showroom to choose a style.
With two days left, there was plenty of time. Once Cordelia tried on and found a suitable style, they could have the designer rush it. She and this dress brand's chief designer were old friends - Amber's little dress came from her hands.
When Cordelia and Evelyn arrived, the designer was attending to other clients.
Cordelia and Evelyn casually browsed the showroom.
Evelyn insisted that the sales assistant take down a backless red dress for Cordelia to try on.
Cordelia had no choice but to try it on.
The red dress had a V-neck design, with the entire back exposed, decorated with a white pearl strand in the middle.
After Cordelia put on the dress, the sales assistant pulled open the curtain.
Looking at herself in the mirror, she could see her cleavage faintly visible.
She rarely wore such revealing styles, so she covered her chest with her hand, too embarrassed to turn around.
Before long, a sweet, cloying voice came from upstairs. "Honey, which one do you think suits me better?"
Cordelia found the voice somewhat familiar, as if she'd heard it somewhere before, but couldn't remember for a moment.
"They all suit you."
A cool male voice came through, and Cordelia finally remembered - this was the voice that had come from Alaric's phone in the elevator last time.
Cordelia paused.
Evelyn also heard Alaric's voice. Looking up, she saw Alaric's arm being held by a woman in a hot little leather skirt.
This woman was a completely different style from both Cordelia and Janet.
Evelyn raised an eyebrow, glanced at Alaric, then said to Cordelia.
"Cordelia, turn around and let me see."
Hearing this, Alaric stopped and looked at Cordelia standing in front of the mirror.
Cordelia had already adjusted her emotions, wearing a gracious smile on her face. Her hand was lightly pressed against her chest as she turned around gently to face Evelyn.
"Does it look okay?"
Her skin was naturally delicate, and the red color made her already fine skin look even more so. The pearls decorating the back added a touch of pure yet seductive allure to her whole appearance.
Evelyn turned her head as if casually, saw Alaric and his female companion, and said with a smile.
"Mr. Hughes, what a coincidence. Could you help me see if this dress suits Cordelia?"
Alaric's jawline tightened, his gaze falling on Cordelia with intensity.
His look now was much more blatant than before, as if seriously examining the dress on Cordelia.
Although Cordelia's hand was still at her chest, he still caught a glimpse of that barely visible cleavage. His eyes darkened, his Adam's apple rolled slightly, and he spoke in a low, husky voice.
"Not suitable."
