Chapter 69

Victoria had been talking about introducing Anna to her best friend Serena for weeks now. She couldn't wait for them to finally meet and for her two favorite people in the world to get along. As the day approached, Victoria's excitement only grew, eager to see her sister and her best friend bond and become even closer.

When the day finally arrived, Victoria brought Anna over to Serena's house for a lunch get-together. As soon as they stepped inside, Serena greeted them with a warm smile and open arms. Anna reciprocated the gesture, hugging Serena tightly and showering her with compliments. Victoria watched with relief as her two favorite people hit it off immediately.

However, as the afternoon went on, Serena couldn't shake the feeling that something was off about Anna. She was bubbly and friendly, just as Victoria had described her, but there was an underlying darkness to her that Serena couldn't quite put her finger on. It was as if there was a shadow hanging over Anna, casting a pall over the otherwise cheerful atmosphere.

Serena tried to push aside her suspicions, chalking it up to nerves or her own overactive imagination. But as the day went on, the feeling only grew stronger. She found herself stealing glances at Anna when she thought no one was looking, trying to discern what it was that set her on edge.

Finally, as they sat down for lunch, Serena felt a knot forming in her stomach. She knew she had to talk to Victoria about her concerns, but she didn't know how to broach the subject without causing tension between them. She agonized over the decision, torn between wanting to protect her best friend and not wanting to cause unnecessary drama.

As they finished their meal, Serena finally mustered up the courage to pull Victoria aside. She led her into the living room, away from Anna's prying eyes, and took a deep breath before speaking.

"Victoria, I need to talk to you about something," Serena began, her voice hesitant. "I know this might sound crazy, but I can't shake the feeling that something is off about Anna. I don't know how to explain it, but there's this...dark aura around her, and I can't ignore it."

Victoria looked at Serena with a mix of confusion and concern. She had never heard anyone speak ill of Anna before, and she couldn't believe her own friend would have such suspicions about her. But as she looked into Serena's eyes, she saw the genuine worry and fear reflected back at her.

"Serena, I understand your concerns, but Anna is my sister. Even though I have known her for a short while she really seems genuine and I trust her completely," Victoria replied, her voice firm. "I think you're just reading too much into things. She's just nervous about meeting new people, that's all."

Serena bit her lip, unsure of how to respond. She didn't want to cause a rift between her and Victoria, but she couldn't shake the feeling that something was seriously wrong. She knew she had to tread carefully, or risk losing her best friend in the process.

As the afternoon drew to a close, Serena tried to push her suspicions to the back of her mind. She joined in on the conversation, laughing and joking with Anna and Victoria as if nothing was wrong. But deep down, she couldn't shake the feeling of unease that lingered in the back of her mind.

As Victoria and Anna bid her goodbye and left, Serena felt a wave of relief wash over her. She was glad to see her go, even though she felt guilty for feeling that way. She knew she had to talk to Victoria about her concerns, but she wanted to wait for the right moment.

That moment came sooner than she had expected. A month later Serena asked Victoria out for dinner, just the two of them. As they sat down for dinner later that evening, Serena couldn’t hold back any longer. She knew she had to tell Victoria the truth, no matter how difficult it was going to be.

Serena and Victoria sat across from each other at a cozy Italian restaurant, their faces illuminated by the soft glow of the candle on the table. It had been weeks since they last saw each other, catching up over dinner. Victoria sighed contentedly, feeling a rush of familiarity and comfort wash over her in Serena’s presence.

“It’s been so long since we’ve done this,” Serena remarked, breaking the silence that had settled between them.

“I know, I’ve missed you so much,” Victoria replied, a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips. “It’s nice just to sit and talk like this again.”

Their conversation flowed easily, touching on various topics from work to relationships to travel. They laughed, reminiscing about old memories and sharing new experiences. For a moment, it felt like nothing had changed between them. Serena had been really busy since Liam was born, with Victoria also going back to work, they barely had time for each other.

As they sipped on their glasses of wine, Serena brought up the topic of Anna again: “Victoria, I need to talk to you about Anna,” Serena began, her voice solemn. “I know she’s your sister, and I respect that. But I can’t ignore the feeling that something is seriously wrong with her. I think there’s something dark about her, something dangerous.”

Victoria stared at Serena in shock, unable to comprehend what she was hearing. She couldn’t believe that her own sister could be capable of such darkness. But as she looked into Serena’s eyes, she saw the genuine fear and concern reflected back at her.

“I...I don’t know what to say,” Victoria stammered, her voice trembling. “I’ve never seen Anna in that light before. But I trust you, Serena. If you say there’s something wrong, then I believe you.”

Even though she loved Anna she felt that she still had to investigate her, maybe she needed help or she was in trouble. She couldn’t just dismiss Serena, but she was hoping that she was wrong just like Christian had been before warming up to Anna.

As the evening wore on, the conversation grew more intimate. Serena shared her own motherhood struggles and triumphs, and Victoria found herself drawn into her friend’s world. They talked about their dreams and fears, their hopes and disappointments. It was a cathartic experience for both of them, a chance to reconnect on a deeper level.

At one point, Serena leaned in close, her eyes sparkling with mischief. “I have a secret to tell you,” she whispered, her voice barely above a breath.

Victoria’s heart raced with anticipation. “What is it?” she asked, leaning in closer to hear Serena’s words.

Serena hesitated for a moment, as if debating whether to share her secret. Finally, she leaned back in her chair and said, “I’ve been seeing a fertility specialist . And he’s amazing, I’m pregnant”

Victoria’s eyes widened in surprise. She couldn’t help but feel happy for her friend, knowing how much Serena deserved happiness in her life.

As they finished their meal, the conversation turned to lighter topics. They swapped recommendations for books and movies, discussing their favorite characters and plots.

Before they parted ways, Serena took Victoria’s hand in hers, a smile playing on her lips. "I'm so glad we had this dinner," she said softly. "I missed our talks, just like old times."

Victoria squeezed Serena's hand, feeling a surge of gratitude for their friendship. "Me too," she replied, her voice filled with emotion. "Let's make sure we don't wait so long to do this again."

As they said their goodbyes and went their separate ways, Victoria couldn't help but feel a sense of peace settle over her. Despite the complexities of their lives and the mystery that often shrouded their conversations, she knew that she could always count on Serena to be there for her. And for that, she was eternally grateful.
