Chapter 70
Anna had always been the type of person who put in extra effort to make others feel comfortable and welcome. So, when she started working at the Chadwick Group full-time, she made it a point to get to know all her new colleagues and make a good impression. She quickly hit it off with everyone, her friendly and approachable demeanor making her a favorite among the staff.
However, Anna was also aware of the rumors circulating about her getting the job because her brother-in-law had recommended her. She didn’t want anyone to think she had only landed the position due to nepotism, so she made sure to work twice as hard as everyone else. She arrived early, stayed late, and made sure to ask questions and learn something new every day.
Victoria couldn’t have been prouder of her sister. She knew Anna deserved the job based on her own merits, but she couldn’t help but worry about how the other employees perceived her. Despite Victoria’s reassurances, Anna couldn’t shake the feeling that she had to prove herself even more because of her connection to Christian.
One person who seemed particularly wary of Anna was Lilly, the company’s HR manager. Lilly had always been a bit reserved and guarded, but she seemed to be even more cautious around Anna. Anna couldn’t understand why, as she had always been nothing but friendly towards Lilly. She tried to approach her and strike up conversations, but Lilly always seemed to brush her off.
One day, during a team meeting, Lilly made a comment that caught Anna off guard. “There’s something fishy about you, Anna, and I will find out what you are hiding," Lilly said in a low voice, her eyes flickering with a hint of something unreadable. Anna felt a chill run down her spine, unsure of what Lilly meant by her cryptic words. Was she implying that Anna was hiding something? Or was she just being overly dramatic?
Despite Lilly's ominous warning, Anna tried to push the thought out of her mind. She continued to work hard and get along with her colleagues, hoping that eventually, Lilly would warm up to her. Victoria, who had overheard the exchange, tried to reassure Anna that Lilly was just being paranoid and that she shouldn't pay any attention to her remarks.
As the weeks went by, Anna began to feel more settled in her role at the Chadwick Group. She had proven herself to be a valuable asset to the team, and even Lilly seemed to be thawing towards her. One day, Lilly approached Anna in the break room and tentatively asked if she wanted to grab lunch together. Anna was surprised but happy to accept the invitation, hoping that this would mark a turning point in their relationship.
During their lunch, Lilly opened up to Anna about her past struggles and insecurities, revealing that her guarded nature was due to a traumatic event in her past. Anna listened attentively, offering her support and understanding. By the end of their meal, Lilly seemed to have a newfound respect and appreciation for Anna.
As they returned to the office, Lilly hesitated before pulling Anna aside. "I'm sorry for judging you before I even got to know you," she said, her voice soft and sincere. "I see now that you're a kind and genuine person, and I'm grateful to have you as a colleague." Anna smiled, feeling a weight lift off her shoulders. She had finally earned Lilly's trust and respect, and she knew that she had made a true friend in her.
Victoria watched from afar, her heart swelling with pride for her sister. She had always known that Anna was a special person, but seeing her overcome hurdles and win over even the most skeptical of colleagues was truly inspiring. As they left the office that evening, Victoria put her arm around Anna's shoulder and whispered, "I told you that you would shine bright, Anna. Don't ever let anyone dim your light."
One day, Anna was at her desk, her fingers flying across the keyboard as she worked on her latest project. She was determined to prove herself as a talented and dedicated employee. As she focused on her work, she couldn’t help but feel grateful for the support and camaraderie of her new friend, Lily.
Lily had been hired at the same time as Anna, and the two had quickly hit it off. They would spend their lunch breaks chatting about everything from their favorite movies to their hopes and dreams for the future. Anna felt like she had finally found a true friend in Lily, someone she could trust and confide in.
But as Anna worked on her project that fateful day, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. Lily had been acting strangely all morning, avoiding Anna’s gaze and keeping to herself. When Anna asked her if everything was okay, Lily had brushed her off with a forced smile and a quick nod.
As the day wore on, Anna’s unease grew. She couldn’t shake the feeling that Lily was hiding something from her, that there was a dark secret lurking beneath the surface of their friendship. And then, in a moment of shocking clarity, everything became clear.
Anna reached into her bag to pull out her notebook, and her fingers brushed against something unexpected. Her heart sank as she fished out a black leather wallet, identical to the one Lily had shown her just the day before. Panic rose in Anna’s chest as she realized what had happened – Lily had accused her of stealing her wallet, and it had somehow ended up in Anna’s bag.
As Anna’s mind raced, trying to piece together what had gone wrong, Lily approached her desk with a smug smile on her face. “I knew it,” she said, her voice dripping with fake sympathy. “I knew you couldn’t be trusted. How could you do this to me, Anna?”
Anna’s eyes widened in disbelief as she looked at Lily, shocked by the betrayal she saw in her friend’s eyes. “I swear, Lily, I didn’t take your wallet,” she stammered, her voice trembling with emotion. “I would never do something like that to you.”
But Lily just shook her head, her expression icy and unyielding. “Save it, Anna. I found the wallet in your bag; it’s as simple as that. I trusted you, and you betrayed me. I never want to see you again.”
As Lily stormed away, leaving Anna alone at her desk, confusion and hurt flooded through Anna’s mind. How could Lily have turned on her so quickly, accusing her of something she hadn’t done? And why had the wallet ended up in Anna’s bag, seemingly without her knowledge?
Determined to get to the bottom of the mystery, Anna began to retrace her steps, trying to figure out how the wallet had ended up in her possession. She combed through her memories of the day, searching for any clue that would shed light on what had happened.
And then, as she sat in her empty office late into the night, a flicker of realization sparked in her mind. She remembered the moment when Lily had asked to borrow a pen, reaching into Anna’s bag to grab one. Could it be possible that Lily had slipped the wallet into Anna’s bag then, framing her for a crime she hadn’t committed?
With a sense of both dread and determination, Anna set out to confront Lily the next day, armed with newfound resolve and a steely determination to uncover the truth. As she entered the office, her eyes locked with Lily’s across the room, and she saw the flicker of guilt in her friend’s eyes.
Without a word, Anna approached Lily and held out the wallet, her voice firm and unwavering. “I know what you did, Lily. You planted this in my bag to frame me for something I didn’t do. Why would you do something like this to me?”
Lily’s eyes widened in surprise, her facade crumbling as she realized she had been caught. “I-I’m sorry, Anna,” she stammered, her voice trembling with shame. “I was desperate; I needed the money in that wallet. I didn’t mean to hurt you; I just didn’t know what else to do.”
As the truth spilled from Lily’s lips, Anna felt a mix of emotions swirling within her – betrayal, anger, but also a flicker of compassion for a friend who had fallen on hard times. And in that moment, she made a decision that would change both of their lives forever.
“Let’s figure this out together, Lily,” Anna said, her voice soft but firm. “I forgive you for what you did, but we need to make this right. And I promise, no matter what happens, I’ll be here for you every step of the way.”
Lily smiled and nodded, but she was not going to give up anytime soon. Anna had to go down; she didn’t understand why Anna was moving up the ranks so quickly.
