Chapter 118
Chapter 118
Aidan's POV
“Find your trail, protect your base…”
The echo of that voice wouldn’t leave my head. It was even annoying that after so long, that's the only voice that still rings in my head.
I couldn't shake off the feeling that the voice sounded more human than anything. The high priestess, who is she? And where is she?
Find your trail. Pfft.
How was I supposed to find anything when I couldn’t even control my own feet?
Petrova and Dr. Myles marched me through the dark streets with a horde of vampires at their heels. The vampires growled as we walked past humans. Those humans met a very bloody fate as the vampires tore them like old meat.
“Keep moving,” Petrova ordered without looking at me after the vampires had sucked up life from the humans.
My body obeyed instantly. That disgusted me. Every single step I took was a reminder that my mind had become a passenger inside my own flesh. And who knows what the hell this duo has in mind.
Either way, Petrova’s plan was already in motion. The takeover of the human world as Dr Myles had spoken about. Jerks!
It annoyed me more that I was the weapon at the front of their villainous parade. A wild monster on their leash.
We were cutting across the street leading to the mayor’s office when I felt a shift in the air. I caught a whiff of a scent that was very familiar. I tried to turn but I couldn't.
The town hall was crowded with police officers and their cars with those childish blue-red sirens.
Petrova laughed as he spotted them.
"Hey! Ain't it too late to have Halloween carnivals? Get the hell out of here," one of the police officers, a male, shouted.
We kept advancing.
"I said stay back or I'll shoot!"
If I was still sane, I'd tell him he was being stupid to threaten a crowd of vampires. And hell, I would have dealt with these guys, but...
Petrova snapped his fingers. My vision turned crimson red. There was no stopping it now. Those men and women were all dead.
I charged at them, ripping them like paper. Not even their gunshots could slow me down.
The vampires spread out into the streets and a few attacked the other officers and some pedestrians on the road.
I stared down at this particular police woman who held a note that had my name written on it. She was gasping for air as blood spilled out of her sides.
I would have pitied her and asked why she had my name on her note but she was already close to her grave.
Petrova walked past me and my body instinctively followed.
We stepped into the main hall and another round of massacre began, leading to the same result —a couple more dead bodies.
Petrova went up the stairs, followed by Dr Myles and then me.
"Aidan!" I heard a familiar voice call me. Without turning I would know who that was.
Professor Rockwell.
As I turned, it was actually him. Yet I couldn't move an inch. He stood there smiling at me. I itched to run to him and hug him, but there was no way that was happening.
Petrova noticed my attention shift and followed my gaze to where Rockwell was. Rockwell didn't flinch, he had the look of someone who had stared death in the eye countless times.
Myles grinned. “Ah. The professor. How delightful. Did you lose your way?"
Rockwell ignored them. His eyes stayed fixed on me.
“Aidan,” he said softly. “Listen to me —”
“Silence,” Myles snapped. "You don't command him anymore, you scoundrel." Then he pointed at me. “Aidan… kill him!”
My body lurched forward before my mind could think of screaming "no".
The floor beneath my feet cracked as I sprinted straight at Rockwell with supernatural force.
I leapt at his face but he dodged. I landed hard on the floor and bounced up again. I charged at him.
He stretched his palm at me. I bounced into a barrier and fell back again.
Aidan, please listen to me, his voice echoed in my head. That same voice, that soothed pains and calmed my fears.
I slammed into him, sending him flying and crashing into a wall. I jumped, flicking out my claws. My claws tore across his chest, ripping the fabric and spilling blood. Rockwell staggered but didn’t fall.
He touched my forehead with his palm as I reached down to grab his neck.
A wave of energy rippled through me bringing back memories and moments I thought I’d buried.
My heart pounded faster. For a second, I felt control return to my fingertips. It was the freedom I would celebrate for eight days.
But my happiness was short-lived.
My vision reddened again. I roared and tackled him, slamming him against the wall again. The wall cracked under the impact. I punched him across the jaw hard. He tumbled over, crashing on the floor.
Myles clapped joyfully. “Kill him! Rip him into pieces!”
I grabbed Rockwell by the neck and lifted him off his feet, my claws digging into his skin. I felt a sting in my head. I was flooded with blind rage, drowning every human thought I had left.
Rockwell’s feet kicked weakly. Blood trickled down his collar. And still he didn’t fight me.
“Aidan…” he choked out with a strained voice. “This isn’t you…”
My mouth parted and lowered to his head.
“Aidan, stop!”
I froze. It felt like I was pulled through a thousand portals by the voice. I knew that voice so well .
Something inside me cracked like glass. I raised my head up.
Elly stood there with the entire gang behind her. Ryan, Jimmy, Adrian and a lady I didn't know had their shocked and terrified eyes on me.
A growl escaped my mouth. And I felt the itch to rip her head off her. I tossed Rockwell away and charged at her.
She didn't move.
"Elly!" Jimmy yelled in unison with Ryan and Rockwell.
She didn't flinch at all. She had her eyes directly on me. A line of tears rolled down her cheeks as I got closer.
Immediately I caught her scent, I froze again. The crimson vision cleared and slowly I felt myself lowering to her height. I was transforming from a monster to a human.
Ryan charged past me at that moment. When I turned I saw him punch Dr Myles away and darted up the stairs.
My body reacted immediately and I ran after them. I heard footsteps behind me but they had stopped abruptly.
I ran up the stairs to the mayor's office.
“Father! How could you?” Ryan kicked down the door.
I pushed him down just at the entrance, pinning him to the floor. Inside, Petrova stood in front of a mirror whispering some chants not minding his son's struggles against me. The dead mayor sat in his chair with blood dripping from his neck.
The mirror shook and twirled like it was water.
“Legrange! I told you to keep your flock in check.”
“I did exactly that,” I heard Principal Legrange’s voice reply through the twirling glass.
“Then why do I have your students here, ruining my plans?”
“Oh those? That can be handled. I have my plans too. Nothing will stop what is to come.”
“Hurry up with it then,” Petrova said and waved casually at the mirror.
He turned to Ryan on the floor.
“And as for you, I think I have to teach you a very bitter lesson. I expect you to be noble and wise, not a fool, son.”
Petrova snapped his fingers and pointed at the door.
“Kill the rest of them.”
My body obeyed and I leapt out of the mayor's office.
