Chapter 117

Chapter 117
Elly's POV

I thought about the "whys" and "what ifs" as Adina drove down the road.

The night was beginning to dawn on us. It made me worried for Professor Rockwell, and even ten times more worried for Aidan.

If the vampires were after him to kill him, they'd be even more active at night.

We heard police sirens and chatters as we drove down the road. Their cars were scattered on the road like they were having some kind of party. Some police officers were in the middle of the road, diverting cars to another route.

We stopped when one of the police officers, a female, waved us down. She flashed her torch into the car, running it on our faces.

"Ma'am, where are you headed?" The police woman said, pointing at the glove compartment of the car.

"I'm looking for my son. He went missing yesterday. My husband filed a report and all, but I don't see the police doing anything," Adina replied.

Wow. Just wow. I would never have thought out such a nice lie in a couple of seconds. Hell, I would've panicked like a chicken.

"I'm sorry, ma'am. What is his name?" The woman in uniform interrogated.

"Aidan."

"Alright. If you can give me a description, that would help too."

Another police man walked up to her side with a torch too.
"Any problems here?"

"No, all good. She's just looking for her son." The woman answered for Adina.

"Elise, get them the fuck out of here. We don't care about her son. The mayor almost fucking died and we need this area cleared up in case that motherfucker shows up," the police man spat out before he left to wave off another car.
Such a jerk.

"Give me a description," Elise continued.

Um... Give me his description, Elly, I heard Adina's voice in my head.

In my mind I started calling out Aidan's looks as I could remember them and Adina just recited them to the woman.

"Alright, ma'am. We'll find him," she said, smiling.
"Are those your kids?" She added.

"No. Just friends of my son."

"Okay. Take the road on the right, please. Thank you."

Adina kicked the car's engine up with the twist of the key. I loved how fluid her fingers were with the key and the steering wheel.

"Cleared!" Elise called out, tapping on the roof of our car.

"I sensed a familiar vampire scent around that mayor's office," Ryan said as we drove down the road.

"I almost choked because of it," Adina said, her eyes still on the road.

"That was a nice cover up there, ma'am," Jimmy cut into the conversation like he had been waiting for someone to initiate first.

Adina smiled. Her smile was so beautiful when I caught it on the visor mirror.

"I'll follow the scent and we might find Aidan... or more vampires," Ryan said, his eyes still fixed on the road.

The car suddenly became quiet. The silence lasted for some minutes, till we got to a junction.

"Where do we go? Left or right?" Adina asked, turning to Ryan.

"Left." Ryan answered quickly and Adina steered the car into the road on the left.

It was a smaller, or tighter, road, unlike the previous one that was wide enough to contain two cars on each lane.

"Left again," Ryan said in a calm yet commanding tone as we got to the other end of the road.

Adina followed his direction and we were back on a larger and busier road. We drove up and slowly we could see the mayor's office coming into view again.

"Are you sure you know what trail you are following?" Adrian asked, touching Ryan on the shoulder.

"Are you seriously asking me that?" Ryan tilted his head to reveal a very intense glare.

"Well, we just went round a circle," Jimmy pointed out the obvious.

"Yes, because I'm trying to get us back on the actual trail..."

“Just let him do his thing, guys,” I said, hoping to calm them down and keep Ryan focused.

"Just tell me where the next turn is," Adina cut into our bickering.

“The right,” Ryan pointed ahead of us.
Adina turned the car to the right as Ryan said.

We went straight for a longer period than we ever did, before Ryan called out another left. We were now driving down. The suspense was brewing within me, like water welling up in a pool.

What were we going to see? Aidan? Or another swarm of vampires?

“We are close,” Ryan added as we drove down the road.
Adina stepped on the accelerator like we were in the freaking Fast and Furious movie. I smiled, Adina was so cool and badass for a high priestess.

“Stop here!” Ryan shouted, pointing at a building on our left.
The car's tyres screeched as Adina stepped on the brakes. I peeked out, there was nothing and no one around except the huge mansion.

I quickly pushed the door open, jumping out. I did another quick scan. Nothing.

“You sure, Ryan?” I asked, turning to Ryan who was now beside me.

“What the fuck? I'm tired of you all asking this question. The scent led me here!” Ryan fumed.

Adrian placed his hand on his shoulder, “Hey, chill. We were just expecting an army of heartless bloodsuckers here.”

Ryan pushed his hand off.

“Not you though. You've got a lovely heart and a hella brain,” Adrian added, hugging him close. Jimmy laughed at their weird bromance.

“Uh guys?” I said, pointing at Adina who had already walked into the mansion while we were once again distracted.

We jogged up the stairs but Ryan didn't follow us. He kept searching around with that look on his face, the look that said something was off.

“It's empty!” I exclaimed immediately I stepped into the mansion.

The others turned to Ryan.

“I feel a dark aura in this house,” Adina said, walking out of a room with a red, bloodstained T-shirt that I recognized very well even with the stains.

“This must be Aidan's right?” She asked, raising the t-shirt up.

“Yes,” I replied almost immediately.

She led us out again.

“Ryan—” she started when we got to the car, but Ryan cut her mid-sentence.

“I can sense my father all around this place. This is his house.”

“Find Aidan with this.’’ She handed the T-shirt to him.

He held the T-shirt and his eyes glowed again. After five seconds, he snapped back to reality.

“He's at the mayor's office,” he said almost out of breath.

We hopped back into the car and Adina stepped on it. We sped back to the mayor's office. The sight we met shocked the hell out of me. Bodies of police officers and other men scattered around the roads and on top cars.

Elise —the friendly police woman— was in the middle of the road, lying in a pool of her own blood with eyes wide open. She gasped weakly when we walked past her, her fingers twitching. I wished we could help her as much as she had wanted to help us, but it was too late for any of us to do anything.

A growl echoed from the town hall. We all rushed past other bloody corpses into the lobby.

The night couldn't get any worse.

In the middle of the lobby, a towering monster had a bloody Professor Rockwell in his grip about to rip his head off with his teeth. I spoke too soon.

“Aidan, stop!”

Those monstrous eyes met mine and I froze as he growled at me.
