CHAPTER 255: THE SIEGE WITHIN
CHAPTER 255: THE SIEGE WITHIN
"You are going to choke yourself if you keep staring at that glass, bellissima."
Alexandro sat on the edge of the mattress, his voice dropping into a low, quiet rumble that barely disturbed the stillness of the master suite.
He held a small porcelain bowl of warm broth in one hand, the silver spoon resting against his thumb.
Bella didn't turn her head. She lay on her side, her small frame swallowed by the black silk sheets, her dark eyes fixed unblinkingly on the floor-to-ceiling glass window.
Outside, the rain washed down the glass in long, distorted streaks, blurring the city skyline into a murky smear of grey and black.
She hadn't spoken a single word in four days.
She hadn't touched the food the staff brought up. She hadn't allowed Dr Vance or the physical therapy team to touch her lower limbs. When the specialists tried to move her feet through basic passive range-of-motion exercises, she had simply closed her eyes, turning her face to the wall and locking her body into a stone-cold, non-verbal vault.
She was waging a silent war against her own body, retreating into a dark, impenetrable fortress where no one could reach her.
Alexandro set the porcelain bowl on the nightstand with a soft click.
He didn't raise his voice. He didn't show the suffocating, jagged panic that was slowly chewing through his ribs every second she remained unresponsive.
He had completely stepped away from the corporate office. His executive assistant was handling the board meetings, and Giovanni was running the street operations on the lower grid.
Alexandro didn't care about the board. He didn't care about the turf. The only world that mattered was contained within these four walls.
He leaned across the mattress, pulling a warm, damp cotton towel from a small basin of scented water resting on the tray.
"Look at me, Bella," Alexandro murmured gently.
Bella’s jaw tightened, her dark lashes fluttering slightly, but her gaze remained glued to the rain on the glass.
Alexandro reached out, his broad, warm hand gently cupping the side of her face. His thumb pressed against her cheekbone, turning her head back toward him. Her skin was cool, pale, and so smooth it felt like fragile porcelain beneath his calloused skin.
"I know you hear me," Alexandro whispered, his dark eyes locking onto her empty, unreadable gaze.
He took the warm, damp cloth and carefully wiped it along her forehead, brushing away the dark, messy curls that clung to her temples. He traced the warm cotton down the side of her slender neck, over her delicate collarbones, and along her pale arms. He washed her skin with meticulous, unhurried precision, treating her not like a broken patient, but like something sacred.
Bella’s throat hitched. A sharp, bitter spark flashed in the depth of her dark eyes, breaking her four-day silence.
"Stop it," she rasped, her voice rough and dry as sandpaper.
Alexandro didn't stop. He dipped the cloth back into the warm basin, wrung it out, and smoothed it over her hand, wiping between her slender fingers. "No."
"I said stop!" Bella spat, pulling her arm back with every ounce of upper-body strength she had left. Her hand struck the basin, sending a splash of warm water over the dark duvet. "Stop touching me! Stop doing this!"
Alexandro picked up the cloth, setting it back on the tray without a single flicker of anger. "You need to clean up. You need to eat."
"I don't need anything from you!" Bella snarled, her voice rising into a sharp, bitter tremble.
She pushed herself up on her elbows, her knuckles turning white against the sheets as she glared at him with pure venom. "What is this sick, twisted game, Alexandro?! Look at me! Look at what I am!"
She slammed her open palm against her lifeless thigh beneath the blanket. The impact made a dull, heavy sound, but her face didn't register a single flicker of sensation.
Tears of raw, unbearable humiliation spilled over her lashes, tracing hot paths down her pale cheeks.
"I am a paralyzed, pathetic useless lump!" she screamed, her voice breaking into a ragged sob. "I can't walk! I can't stand! I won’t even take a shower by myself! Does it make you feel powerful to sit here and bathe a pet? Is keeping me locked in your penthouse satisfy your sick mobster ego?!"
She struck his chest with her fist. A weak, desperate blow that barely rattled his frame. She struck him again, and again, her fists thumping against his broad shoulders as she poured every ounce of her rage, grief, and terror into him.
"I hate you!" she wept, her voice cracking. "I hate you for bringing me here! I hate you for looking at me like this!"
Alexandro didn't flinch. He didn't pull back. He absorbed every blow, standing like an unyielding anvil against her storm.
When her weak strikes finally slowed, her energy completely spent, Alexandro reached out.
He caught both of her trembling wrists in one large hand, pinning them gently against his chest, and pulled her body forward until her forehead crashed against his collarbone.
"Are you done?" Alexandro growled softly, his voice dropping into an intensely deep, terrifyingly steady register.
Bella hyperventilated against his shirt, her body shaking with violent, uncontrollable sobs. "Let me go... please, Alex... just let me die..."
"Listen to me, Isabella," Alexandro commanded, his grip on her wrists tightening just enough to anchor her.
He leaned down, his lips brushing against her temple, his deep voice vibrating straight into her chest. "You listen to me very carefully."
He released her wrists, his hands framing her face, forcing her to look up at him.
His dark eyes were burning with an absolute, possessive fire that made her heart slam violently against her ribs.
"I do not care about the Siren," Alexandro declared, his tone laced with steel. "I do not care if you never take another step for the rest of your life. I do not care if your legs never heal. I do not care if you spend the next fifty years screaming at me and cursing my name."
Bella gasped, her dark eyes wide as she stared at the raw, terrifying honesty etched into his sharp features.
"You are not a trophy," Alexandro whispered, his thumb wiping the tears from her cheeks with fierce tenderness. "You are my heart. You took a bullet meant for my mother, and you bled on my hands. Do you really think I am going to let you rot in the dark because your body is tired? Do you really think I am ever going to walk away from you?"
"Alex..." she choked out, her breath catching in her throat.
"I am never leaving your side, Bella," Alexandro stated, leaving zero room for doubt. "If you can't walk, I will carry you. If you won't eat, I will sit here until you do. You can fight me all you want, but you will never push me out of this room."
Bella stared at him, her chest heaving, her lips trembling as the icy wall she had built over the past four days shattered completely.
For years, her existence had been conditional. Enzo had valued her only as long as she could wield a blade. The Council had valued her only as long as she could execute targets. Her worth had always been tied to her lethal utility. But looking into Alexandro's dark, fierce eyes, she saw no pity. She saw no calculation. She saw a man who looked at her broken, unmoving body and wanted her with the same suffocating, absolute devotion as before.
A small, broken sob escaped her lips but it was not of rage this time around, but of sheer, overwhelming release.
She collapsed forward, burying her face into the crook of his neck. Her arms slid around his broad shoulders, her fingers gripping the fabric of his shirt as if she were drowning and he was the only solid ground left in the world.
Alexandro wrapped his arms around her back, pulling her tight against his broad chest.
