CHAPTER 254: UNCERTAIN SHADOWS
CHAPTER 254: UNCERTAIN SHADOWS
"Why can't I feel my legs?"
The question hung in the quiet master suite, heavy enough to suffocate the room.
Alexandro’s heart slammed into his ribs.
He couldn't answer. He couldn't even draw a full breath.
Beside the bed, Maria clasped both hands over her mouth, a stifled gasp escaping her lips as tears welled in her eyes.
Dr Vance stepped closer to the bed, his expression carefully guarded as he looked at Bella. He pulled up a stool, his tone calm and measured.
"Miss Moretti," Dr Vance began softly, keeping his voice entirely professional. "We need to step back and look at the surface level first. You have just emerged from a three-week medically induced coma following massive, high-grade traumatic shock. Your central nervous system has been completely suppressed."
Bella’s eyes snapped to the doctor, wild and desperate. "Don't give me medical babble! Why is everything below my waist numb?!"
"Right now, we cannot make a definitive diagnosis," he explained calmly. "It could simply be severe nerve dormancy from prolonged immobility, lingering neural swelling, or a temporary somatic block. We cannot know anything for certain until we run a full battery of spinal scans, nerve conduction tests, and cranial MRIs."
Bella’s jaw clenched, her breath hitching in her throat as she stared at him with pure, piercing intensity. "Tell me the truth, Doctor. Stop dancing around it."
Dr Vance let out a slow breath, adjusting his posture. "The truth? Based on the surgical reports from Saint Jude’s when they extracted the bullet from your thoracic cavity... a degree of neurological impairment was listed as a high possibility. But spinal tissue and brain trauma heal unpredictably. Until we take you in for updated testing, anything I tell you is just a guess."
The room went stone-cold.
Bella lay on the pillows, her chest heaving in short, jagged gasps. A sharp, terrifying void opened up in her stomach.
She was an assassin. A ghost. A weapon. Her entire life, her survival, her pride, everything was built on her physical agility.
The mere possibility of a permanent loss like that was like a death sentence.
"Get out," Bella whispered, her voice trembling.
"Miss Moretti, we need to monitor your vitals—"
"Get out!" she screamed suddenly, her raspy voice tearing through the quiet room.
She reached out with a trembling, violent hand, grabbing a glass water tumbler from the bedside table and hurling it directly at the wall beside the doctor.
The glass shattered into a hundred sharp pieces, crashing against the floor.
"Bella, please—" Maria tried, taking a step forward.
"I said get the fuck out! All of you!" Bella shrieked, her knuckles white as she grabbed a heavy brass lamp and yanked it off the nightstand, sending it crashing onto the hardwood. "Get out of my room! Leave me the fuck alone!"
Dr Vance immediately gestured to his medical team, backing toward the entrance. Maria hesitated, her eyes brimming with tears, but the cold, frantic fury in Bella's eyes forced her to retreat into the corridor.
Alexandro stood by the edge of the mattress, his dark eyes locked onto her trembling form. He took a single step toward her, his hand reaching out. "Bella..."
"Out, Alexandro!" she spat, her dark eyes flashing with a raw, dangerous venom as she grabbed a hardback book from the side table and slammed it against his chest. "Out!"
Alexandro absorbed the hit without flinching. He looked at her pale, frantic face, seeing the sheer, suffocating terror hidden beneath her violent outburst. He knew pushing her right now would only shatter her further.
"I will be right outside," Alexandro murmured, his voice deep and steady.
He slowly backed away, stepping over the broken glass and out into the hallway.
He pulled the heavy doors shut, sealing the master suite.
Alexandro stood in the quiet, carpeted corridor, his hands jammed into his pockets, his jaw set like iron as he stared at the dark wood of the door.
Then, through the thick, insulated frame, a faint sound reached his ears.
It wasn't screaming. It wasn't the sound of furniture breaking.
It was a small, broken sob. Soft, muffled, and impossibly quiet, Bella was crying into her pillow, her entire body shaking in silent, agonizing terror.
The sound tore through Alexandro's chest, breaking his heart far more completely than any bullet ever could.
