The SUV bumped along a narrow, dirt track, the trees growing thicker and taller around them. It felt like they were driving to the edge of the world. Lily had lost all sense of direction hours ago.
Her body was tired, her mind buzzing with images of the night. Dmitri's brutal grace, the silent fall of the men, the frantic escape. It was a lot to take in. Her father's face, bruised and still, flashed in her mind. The nightmare was coming for her, even while she was awake. She shivered.
Finally, Gabrielle slowed the SUV, turning sharply into what looked like a hidden path. After a few more twists and turns, a small, dark shape appeared through the trees. It was a cabin. Rustic. Isolated. Very, very far from any resort.Gabrielle parked the car a little distance from the cabin, hidden by thick bushes.
The other two security vehicles parked further back, out of sight. "We're here, Boss," Gabrielle said, his voice quiet.Dmitri nodded. "Secure the area. Then check inside. Standard procedure." He watched Gabrielle and his men melt into the shadows, ghosts in the forest. He trusted Gabrielle completely. He was his eyes and ears when he couldn't be everywhere. Good. One less thing to worry about. For now. My princess needs to feel safe.Dmitri opened his door. "Come on, Lily," he said, his voice softer now that the immediate danger seemed to have lessened. He wanted to see her face, to know she was truly okay. That fear in her eyes... it bothered him. He needed to make it go away. He needed to earn her trust. He loved the way she was timid, a bit shy, a contrast to the brutal world he lived in. It made her feel more precious, more real.Lily got out of the car, stretching her stiff body.
The air was cool and smelled of soft fruity fragrance and damp earth. It was quiet here. Very quiet. So quiet it felt like the world had stopped. The only sounds were the rustle of leaves and the distant chirping of unseen birds. It was beautiful, in a lonely way.
The cabin was small. Made of dark wood logs, with a simple stone chimney. It looked like something from a fairy tale, or a horror movie. Lily hoped for the fairy tale. Though, with Dmitri, I guess it’s a dark fairy tale.Dmitri waited for Gabrielle's signal.
After a few minutes, Gabrielle's voice came through his earpiece, soft but clear. "All clear, Boss. Cabin secure.""Good," Dmitri said. He gestured towards the cabin. "Our new home, for now." He watched Lily walk towards it, her footsteps crunching on the fallen leaves. The forced closeness with him in the car had been one thing. A cabin, small and isolated, was quite another. There was nowhere to hide here.
No lobby, no other guests, just... them. And Gabrielle and his men, somewhere out there, watching. She's mine. My responsibility. And I will protect her. From everything. Even herself. I will make her feel safe, so safe she won't even think of running.Inside, the cabin was simple.
A small living area with a fireplace, a tiny kitchen corner, and a single door that probably led to a bedroom. No fancy furniture, no big windows looking out onto the ocean. Just practical, sturdy wood. It felt intensely private. Cut off from the world.
"Cozy," Lily said dryly, looking around. "Very 'fugitive chic.' Did you build this yourself, or is this your 'hunting lodge' for rogue journalists?"
Dmitri smirked. "It's one of many. And no, I have people for construction. It's a place where we won't be found. No one knows about this one but a very select few. Not even Yuri." He walked towards the tiny kitchen, opening a cupboard. "We rest. We strategize. And yes, we live here. For just a very short time." He pulled out two dusty mugs. "Coffee?"Lily watched him, leaning against the doorframe. He was acting so normal. As if they hadn't just escaped a bloody ambush.
"You're amazing," she said, her voice flat, filled with a mix of awe and disbelief. "Just... amazing. How can you be like this? So... calm."He turned, his eyes piercing. "Like what, Lily? Efficient? Prepared? Alive?" His gaze held hers.
"Or are you referring to my ability to switch from one extreme to another without a second thought?"Her cheeks flushed. He saw too much. "All of it," she admitted softly. "The fighting... then you were... then the escape..." She waved a hand, trying to explain the chaos in her mind.
Dmitri poured water into a small pot. "It's my life, tsarevna. It's what I do. And now, it's our life. You understand that, don't you, princess?" His tone was firm, a reminder of their forced reality. "There's no going back to your 'normal' after this. Not for you. Not for us." The weight of his words hung in the air. He was right. Her old life, her old normal, felt like a dream she had woken up from.
She was in his world now. Maybe For good.
Dmitri stepped outside for a moment, pulling out a small, secured satellite phone. Lily watched him through the cabin window.
His back was to her, but she could hear the low rumble of his voice. He was talking to someone important, coordinating, checking on his empire. "Boris, Vlad," she heard him say, then a pause. "Any unexpected movements? Yuri's men were sloppy here. What about Volkov?" His voice was calm, steady, powerful.
Even here, cut off from the world, he was still the Don. He was making sure his empire wasn't crumbling.
"They will pay for this. For coming after what's mine. For putting her in danger. I will end them all."
