Lily walked to the single bedroom door. She opened it. Inside was a small, simple bed, neatly made. Only one bed. Her stomach twisted. Of course.
Forced intimacy. It was the theme of her life now.Dmitri came back inside, sliding the phone into his pocket. He looked at her, his eyes serious. "My empire is stable. For now. But they will be looking for us. They know I'm alive. That means they will be more desperate."He saw her looking at the bed.
A hint of a smirk touched his lips. "Comfortable, princess?" he asked. It wasn't about the bed's comfort.Lily crossed her arms. "Very. If you enjoy sleeping in a literal sardine can with a terrifying mafia boss."Dmitri chuckled, the sound deep and warm.
"I enjoy knowing you're close enough to protect, Lily. And close enough to remind me of what I'm fighting for." He walked towards her, slowly, deliberately. The exhaustion, the fear, the night's interrupted passion, it all built between them, a thick, living thing. He stopped just a step away.
The small cabin suddenly felt even smaller, filled only with his presence, his scent. His eyes, dark and heavy, met hers. He didn't speak. He didn't need to. The air between them filled with unspoken desire, a silent acknowledgment of the danger they were in, and the undeniable pull that had finally, fully taken hold.
"So," Lily said, her voice a little shaky, trying to break the intense quiet. "About that biography. Since we're stuck here, and you're so good at giving orders, maybe you can give me some... facts."
Dmitri's smirk widened. "Facts? You want facts, tsarevna? I thought you were a journalist. You find your own facts."
"Hard to find facts when I'm locked in a cabin with a very secretive mafia boss," she shot back. "And you said I had to write it. So, talk. Tell me something. Anything. About your family. About your past. What I've been writing haven't been so.. interesting" Her voice was soft, but there was a stubborn edge to it. "This is my job."
"This is my way out. This is how I find the truth about Dad. I guess."
Dmitri looked at her for a long moment, his eyes searching hers. He saw the genuine need in her, the professional drive.
He also saw the lingering fear, the pain of her father's death. She needs this. She needs answers. And I am the only one who can give them to her. Or control them. He wanted to win her trust. He wanted her to look at him with something other than fear and defiance.
He wanted her to look at him like she looked at him last night, before the door opened. He walked past her, towards the small table.
He pulled out a worn, leather-bound book. It looked old. "Alright, Lily Hills. You want facts? Let's officially start with the beginning. My beginning." He sat down, opening the book. It was a family ledger, filled with names and dates, some in Russian.
"My family has been in... business... for generations. Not always legal. But always powerful. My grandfather, old Ivan Kalashnikov, he built this empire from nothing. A true beast."Lily's eyes lit up. This was it. Real information.
She pulled up a chair across from him, grabbing a small notebook and pen from her bag. "Your grandfather. What was he like?"Dmitri's face softened slightly, a rare sight. "A monster. And a genius. He taught me everything. How to survive. How to rule. How to make sure no one ever crosses a Kalashnikov." His voice dropped, becoming serious.
"He taught me that trust is a weakness. That loyalty is bought. And that power... power is everything.
"Lily scribbled furiously. "So, you grew up knowing this was your path? No dreams of being a doctor? Or a ballet dancer?" She teased lightly.
Dmitri actually chuckled, a deep, warm sound.
"Ballet dancer? You are ridiculous, Lily. No. My path was set the day I was born. My brother, Damien... he always hated it. He always wanted something else. Something... cleaner." His voice turned cold when he spoke of Damien.Lily's hand paused. "Damien," she repeated softly. Her mind went to the warehouse, to her father's body.
And then to the resort, seeing Damien's face, or someone who looked exactly like him. The nightmares had been getting worse. Images of blood, of her father's eyes, of Damien's cold stare.
She often woke up in a cold sweat, screaming silently.Dmitri seemed to sense her shift. He looked up, his eyes sharp. "What is it, Lily?"
She swallowed. "Nothing. Just... the story. It's intense." She tried to hide the sudden chill. "Tell me more about Damien. What was he like? Really?"
Dmitri leaned back, his gaze piercing. "Damien was... complicated. He had a charm that could fool anyone. He was smart. But he was also weak. And greedy. He always wanted more. More power. More money. More than he deserved." He paused, his eyes narrowing.
"He was a snake, Lily. Always."Lily wrote it down. Snake. Greedy. Weak. She thought about the man at the resort, the one who looked like Damien. He hadn't looked weak. He had looked dangerous. Was it really him? Or my mind playing tricks?"Did he ever... did he ever get involved in anything outside the family business?" Lily asked, trying to sound casual.
"Like... legitimate businesses? Or... other projects?" She was fishing for "Project Beekeeper."Dmitri's jaw tightened. His eyes flickered.
He seemed to weigh her question. "Damien always dabbled. He liked to play big. He had his own projects. Some... less savory than others. He was always looking for an edge. A way to get ahead. Even if it meant stepping on others." He watched her carefully, as if waiting for her to react.
She's digging. He knew she would. She's smart. But she doesn't know the full truth yet.
And he will control what she learns. She's so timid, but so persistent. It's a dangerous mix. But he loves it. He felt a fierce need to protect her from the ugliness of Damien's true nature, even as he wanted her to understand the danger.
While Lily's heart pounded. He was giving her something. A tiny crack in his wall. "What kind of projects?" she pressed, her voice low.
"Pharmaceuticals, maybe? Big companies?"Dmitri's face was unreadable for a second. Then, he changed the subject.
"Alright, enough about Damien. Let's talk about me. Specifically, my love life." He leaned forward, a devilish glint in his eyes. "You're writing my biography, aren't you? What kind of Don do you think I am if I don't have a few... interesting stories there?"
Lily blinked, caught off guard. "Your... your love life? That's... not really part of a biography."
"Oh, but it is," Dmitri countered smoothly, his smile widening. "Especially when you're writing it, princess. Don't you want to know about my past conquests? My... romantic endeavors?"
He watched her, enjoying the slight flush on her cheeks.
