Chapter 70 Lucky Escape
Serena's POV
It was crazy, it was wild, it was speculative, but it was all we had left.
The pilot immediately turned to me. “What do you have in mind?” He asked with his voice still shaking from fear.
“It would involve you bringing down the defense system,” I started.
“Are you nuts?” He asked. “If I do that, there'll be nothing stopping them from getting to us,” he added.
“It's just what we want them to think,” I replied.
“How?” He asked.
“It's going to create a distraction. Look, there are about ten men there. The moment the defense goes down, at least half will make their way towards us,” I explained.
“Okay? I don't see how that's any different from what I said,” he replied.
“It would also give me the room to fire a shot,” I added. “If I can get a shot at Luca, Dante would move quickly and the men would be torn between two sides. You will also get the jet running at the same time, giving us more firing power,” I explained further.
“That actually sounds like it can work,” he started, calming down for the first time since I came here.
I looked up and noticed the way Dante was looking around, he was running out of options.
“Please hold on,” I prayed while staring at the screen.
“Wait, I have a better idea. If you aim for Luca, the sniper on Don would take him out immediately,” he said, pressing some buttons till a man in a truck came to view. “Aim for him,” he said, pointing at him.
I gave it a thought and it made loads of sense, but I hated it as I so wished to put a bullet in Luca’s head.
“That way, you would free Dante to move and he's way quicker than Luca who doesn't even have a gun in hand,” he added.
I nodded reluctantly, then lifted the pistol up. “But would this do?” I asked, lifting it to him.
“Let's get that down first,” he remarked, pushing it down with a finger. “And no, that won't cut. But this would,” he added, reaching into a box and bringing out a sniper.
He handed it over to me and I took it slowly as I had never held anything like this before.
“Your first time?” He asked and I nodded.
“You'll do good, you've got the heart,” he said and I smiled warmly.
“Thank you,” I said, then turned to the screen. “Now, let's get this done with.”
He nodded and I stepped back to the main part of the jet. Then I picked the best spot before setting up the sniper.
I took a deep breath and called out to the pilot. “Now!”
Immediately, the heavy walls around the jet slowly peeled away and the view ahead of us came to sight.
Dante looked back at the jet in surprise while Luca smiled, gesturing to his men to move forward.
I took a deep breath and aimed for the sniper guy, but immediately brought it back to Luca.
I hated the ugly smile on his face that reminded me so much of Marco. Just once bullet and that smile is gone forever.
Then another thought flooded my mind immediately. It was the message from Valentina and the unknown number, that my freedom was only possible with Dante's death.
If I shoot Luca, I eliminate my biggest enemy and if Dante gets shot, I get my freedom. A win win for me.
“Shoot, now!” I heard the pilot call.
Yes. I have to do this now, it may be my only opportunity to be free.
Dante's POV
I watched with pure rage in my eyes as the jet's defense system went off, and it didn't help that Luca kept laughing behind me.
I was left wondering what they had in mind with this.
It wasn't long before Luca’s men went marching towards the jet.
But as I stared at the jet, I noticed something.
I slowly lifted up my right hand that stood between Luca and I, then slowly turned to it to find a red dot on it.
Oh no.
I immediately turned back to Luca, wary of being shot down afterwards.
But few seconds later, I heard a cry from far off and looked up to find it coming from the truck.
I looked down immediately to find no dot on my chest, then looked back at Luca who shrugged slowly with a nervous smile.
And before he could make a move, I reached into my suit jacket, pulling out my gun.
But I quickly chose to fire directly at the man holding Nico as he was completely unaware of everything till now.
I rolled on the ground immediately as that gave Luca the time to pull his gun out and fire at me.
I had barely dodged the first shot and the next was even closer.
I jumped to my feet, hitting Luca's gun away and kicking him straight in the gut.
I turned quickly as those shots had signaled the other men. I rolled away from a bullet before firing at the closest man to me.
Then heavy bullets tore through the ground immediately, but not from Luca’s men.
I crouched down and looked up to find the jet in the air and firing down at Luca's men.
I rushed to get out of the way and when I looked back at our attackers, they were retreating with Luca being led out by a host of men.
It wasn't long before Luca and his men zoomed off as the jet seized fire the moment they left the premises.
I slowly got up and made my way towards the jet which was hanging in the air. Nico arrived shortly afterwards.
“Don, I swear, I had no idea they would be here,” he said the moment he got close to me.
I shook my head, taking a deep breath and tapping him on his shoulder. “I can't blame you for that, Luca acted smart and he nearly had us,” I replied.
“Yeah, we were lucky,” he replied.
“Lucky? No. I think you owe someone an apology.”
