Growing Closer
Growing Closer
Lyra's POV
"Duck!" I shouted, throwing myself sideways as Darius's training sword whistled past my ear.
He was moving so fast I could barely see him, but instead of feeling scared like I used to with Marcus, I felt... excited. My heart was racing, but not from fear. From the thrill of finally being able to keep up.
"Better," Darius said, lowering his weapon with a proud smile. "You're actually starting to trust your instincts."
I grinned back at him, wiping sweat from my face. "Only took me two weeks to stop flinching every time you moved."
It was true. When we'd first started training together, I'd spent most of our lessons curled up in a ball, waiting for the pain that never came. Marcus had trained me to expect hurt from every encounter. But Darius was different.
"Want to try something new?" he asked, and I nodded eagerly.
That's when everything went wrong.
Darius tossed me a wooden practice sword, but as I caught it, silver light burst from my hands. The sword turned to ash in seconds, and the light kept getting brighter and brighter.
"I can't stop it!" I gasped, fear flooding through me as the power spiraled out of control.
The silver light was spreading now, turning everything it touched into crystal. Trees, rocks, even the grass was transforming into something that looked like frozen stars.
"Lyra, look at me," Darius said quietly, walking straight toward me despite the dangerous energy crackling around my body.
"Stay back! I don't want to hurt you!"
But he kept coming, and when he reached me, he did something that made my heart stop. He took my glowing hands in his, letting that wild silver light flow over both of us.
"You're not going to hurt me," he said softly. "I trust you completely."
The moment he said those words, the chaotic energy suddenly settled. Instead of killing everything around us, it became warm and gentle, like liquid moonlight.
"How did you do that?" I whispered.
"I didn't do anything," Darius replied, his thumbs tracing circles on my hands. "Your power reacts to your emotions. When you're afraid, it tries to protect you by striking out. When you feel safe and loved, it becomes healing energy instead."
Safe and loved. The words made my chest feel tight in a good way.
"Is that what this is?" I asked quietly. "Love?"
Darius's eyes went soft. "I was hoping you'd figure that out for yourself."
Before I could reply, he leaned down and kissed me. It was nothing like the demanding, painful kisses Marcus used to force on me. This was gentle and sweet, like Darius was asking approval instead of taking what he wanted.
When we broke apart, I felt like I was glowing from the inside out.
"I've never felt anything like this before," I revealed.
"Neither have I," Darius said, and I could hear the honesty in his words. "Real love is supposed to make you feel stronger, not weaker. It should build you up, not tear you down."
"Marcus always said I was lucky he wanted me at all," I said, the old hurt coming into my voice. "That no one else would ever love a broken slave."
Darius's face darkened. "Marcus was a lie and a monster. You're not broken, Lyra. You're the best person I've ever met."
"How can you say that? I can't even control my own power."
"Because you survived twenty years of abuse and still have kindness in your heart," Darius answered. "Because you risked everything to help other people. Because you're sitting here with me instead of hiding somewhere safe."
His words made tears start flowing down my face, but they were good tears. Happy tears.
"I want to show you something," Darius said, helping me to my feet. "Something about who you really are."
He led me to a part of Haven's Rest I'd never seen before - a small building that looked old, with symbols carved into the stone walls that seemed to pulse with their own light.
"This is our library," Darius explained, pushing open the heavy wooden door. "It contains books and artifacts from the old days, when the first werewolves walked the earth."
Inside, the walls were lined with shelves full of books that looked older than anything I'd ever seen. But what caught my attention was a picture hanging on the far wall.
It showed a woman with long silver hair and eyes that sparkled like stars. She was wearing a crown made of light, and she looked... familiar.
"That's Queen Asteria," Darius said quietly. "The first StarBlood king. She was picked by the celestial spirits to lead all werewolves three thousand years ago."
I stared at the picture, my heart racing. "She looks like me."
"She should," Darius answered. "She's your relative. Your great-great-grandmother, going back about a hundred generations."
My legs felt weak. "That's impossible. I'm just a slave."
"You're the rightful heir to the StarBlood throne," Darius said gently. "Your parents were the last StarBlood rulers before they were killed. You're not just any wolf, Lyra. You're monster royalty."
I sank into a nearby chair, my mind spinning. "But I don't know how to be a queen. I don't know how to rule anyone."
"Neither did Asteria when she started," Darius said, sitting beside me. "But she learned. And she had help from someone who loved her."
He pointed to another figure in the picture - a tall man with dark hair standing beside the queen.
"That's King Orion," Darius continued. "He wasn't born royal either. He was a warrior who won his place through courage and loyalty. They ruled together as equals."
"Like us?" I asked hopefully.
"Like us," Darius agreed, taking my hand. "If you want that."
"I do," I said instantly. "I want to be with you, and I want to help people the way my family did. But I'm scared. What if I'm not strong enough?"
"You are," Darius said strongly. "Your power is already stronger than most fully trained StarBlood dogs. And it's still growing. "
That's when I noticed something strange. The symbols on the walls were glowing brighter, pulsing in time with my heartbeat.
"Darius," I said nervously, "is that supposed to happen?"
He looked around, his face growing serious. "The symbols only react to StarBlood magic when..."
He didn't finish his sentence, but his face went pale.
"When what?" I asked.
"When another StarBlood is nearby," he whispered. "But that's impossible. You're the only one left."
The glow from the symbols was getting stronger now, and I could feel something tugging at my awareness. Like someone was calling my name from very far away.
"Lyra," Darius said quickly, "we need to leave. Now."
But before we could move, the library door slammed shut behind us. The temperature dropped so fast I could see my breath, and shadows started moving across the walls like live things.
"Well, well," said a voice that made my blood freeze. "The little lost princess has finally come home."
A figure stepped out of the darkness - a woman with silver hair and purple eyes that glowed with unnatural light. She looked young, but there was something old and terrible about her.
"Hello, great-great-granddaughter," she said with a smile that showed too many teeth. "I'm High Priestess Morgana. And I've been looking for you for a very long time."
"That's impossible," Darius said, moving protectively in front of me. "Morgana is dead. She died three hundred years ago."
"Death is such a limiting concept," Morgana laughed. "Especially when you have access to StarBlood magic. Your ancestors' blood kept me young and strong for centuries. But I'm running low on stock."
She looked directly at me, and I felt like a mouse being stared at by a snake.
"Lucky for me, the last StarBlood just awakened her power," Morgana continued. "And even better, she's bonded with the fugitive prince. Your joint magic will give me everything I need to become immortal."
"You're the one who killed my parents," I realized, anger surging through me.
"Guilty as charged," Morgana said happily. "Though I must admit, I'm impressed you survived. Most babies don't last long without their parents' safety."
The symbols on the walls were blazing now, reacting to my rage. But instead of feeling out of control, I felt centered. Powerful.
"You made a mistake," I told Morgana, standing up straighter.
"Oh? And what's that?"
"You let me grow up," I said, silver light starting to flow from my hands. "You let me find people who love me. You let me find who I really am."
"Touching," Morgana said. "But you're still just a frightened little girl who can barely control her power."
"Maybe," I admitted. "But I'm not alone anymore."
Darius stepped up beside me, his own power joining with mine. The mixture of our magic made the entire library shake.
"Together," he said simply.
"Together," I agreed.
But as we prepared to fight, Morgana did something surprising. She started laughing.
"Oh, children," she said, wiping tears from her eyes. "You still don't understand. I'm not here to fight you."
"Then why are you here?" Darius asked.
Morgana's smile turned nasty. "I'm here to send a message. Your precious Haven's Rest is surrounded by my army. Shadow wolves, corrupted celestials, and every dark creature I've collected over the ages."
My blood went cold. "You're lying."
"Am I?" Morgana asked, pointing toward the window.
I looked outside and saw hundreds of glowing red eyes looking back at us from the darkness. The shadow wolves from my dreams were real, and they were everywhere.
"You have a choice," Morgana continued. "Surrender yourself to me freely, and I'll let everyone in Haven's Rest live. Refuse, and I'll turn this refuge into a graveyard."
"Don't listen to her," Darius said strongly. "We can fight them."
"Can you?" Morgana asked. "All of them? While protecting every innocent wolf in your little kingdom?"
She was right. Even with our united power, we couldn't fight an entire army while keeping everyone else safe.
"I'll give you one hour to decide," Morgana said, already fading back into the darkness. "One hour to choose between your freedom and their lives."
As she faded, her final words echoed through the library: "Choose wisely, little princess. Because this is the last choice you'll ever make."
