The StarCrown Legend
The StarCrown Legend
Lyra's POV
The old book flew off the shelf and smacked me right in the face.
"Ow!" I yelped, stumbling backward as more books started shooting themselves around the library. Papers were swirling through the air like a tornado, and the magical symbols on the walls were glowing so bright they hurt to look at.
"What's happening?" Darius yelled over the chaos, dodging a flying scroll that nearly took his head off.
"I don't know!" I yelled back, trying to catch a heavy leather book before it crashed into a window. "Everything just went crazy when I touched that painting!"
It was true. The moment I'd put my hand on the portrait of Queen Asteria, the entire library had erupted into magical chaos. Books were flying, symbols were blazing, and I could hear something that sounded like voices whispering in a tongue I didn't understand.
Then, as quickly as it started, everything stopped.
The books fell to the floor with loud thuds. The papers floated down like snow. And in the sudden silence, I heard something that made my heart race.
My name. Someone was calling my name.
But not out loud. The voice was inside my head, warm and familiar, like a memory from a dream.
Lyra. My beautiful daughter.
I gasped, spinning around to look at the picture. Queen Asteria's eyes seemed to be looking straight at me now, and her lips were moving.
"Darius," I whispered, "do you see that?"
"See what?" he asked, but when he looked at the picture, his face went pale. "The painting... it's changing."
He was right. Queen Asteria was fading away, and in her place, a different woman was showing. Someone with the same gray hair and star-bright eyes, but younger. More comfortable.
"Mom?" I breathed.
The woman in the picture smiled, and I felt tears streaming down my face. I'd never seen my mother before, but somehow I knew it was her. The same way you know your own image.
My dear Lyra, her voice echoed in my mind. If you're seeing this message, it means you've survived and found your way to safety. It means you've begun to awaken your true power.
"She's talking to me," I told Darius, my voice shaking. "My mother. She left me a message somehow. " I wish I could be there with you, my mother continued. I wish your father and I could have watched you grow up, could have taught you about your ancestry ourselves. But fate had other plans.
The picture shifted again, and now I could see my father standing beside my mother. He was tall and strong, with kind eyes that looked just like mine.
We knew Morgana was coming for us, my father's voice joined my mother's. We knew she wanted to steal our power and destroy the StarBlood line forever. So we made a choice.
"What choice?" I whispered.
We hid our most valuable treasure, my mother explained. Not gold or jewels, but something far more valuable. Something that belongs to you by right of birth.
The picture changed one more time, showing an image that made me gasp. It was a crown, but not like any crown I'd ever seen. It looked like it was made of pure starlight, with points that seemed to reach toward the skies. Just looking at it made me feel strong and peaceful at the same time.
The StarCrown, my father said. The original symbol of StarBlood power, created by the celestial spirits themselves. Whoever wears it doesn't just rule over werewolves - they become a bridge between the human world and the realm of spirits.
"Where is it?" I asked desperately. "Where did you hide it?"
But the picture was already fading. My parents' words grew distant as their images disappeared.
Find the place where starlight hits the earth, my mother whispered. Where the first wolves made their pact with the celestial spirits. The crown waits for you there, my daughter. Only you can claim it. Only you can...
Her voice cut off, and the picture returned to its original image of Queen Asteria. The library was quiet again, but my mind was racing.
"Did you hear any of that?" I asked Darius.
"I heard voices, but I couldn't make out the words," he responded. "StarBlood magic only reacts fully to other StarBlood wolves. What did they tell you?"
I described everything - the StarCrown, the hidden treasure, the cryptic clue about starlight touching the earth. With each word, Darius's face grew more serious.
"I've heard legends about the StarCrown," he said slowly. "My teachers at the Celestial Court mentioned it in old stories. They said it was lost when the first StarBlood empire fell, three thousand years ago."
"But my parents hid it," I said. "Which means it's still out there somewhere."
"Lyra," Darius said slowly, "if the StarCrown really exists, and if you could find it... you wouldn't just be a StarBlood wolf anymore. You'd be the StarBlood Empress. The true ruler of all werewolves."
The idea made me feel dizzy. "I don't want to rule anyone. I just want to be free."
"I know," Darius said softly. "But sometimes we don't get to choose our fate. Sometimes destiny chooses us."
Before I could reply, the library door burst open. Seraphina ran in, her face white with fear.
"They're moving," she gasped. "Morgana's army. They're not waiting for the hour to be up."
We rushed to the window, and my heart sank. The red eyes surrounding Haven's Rest were getting closer. I could see forms moving in the darkness - wolves made of shadow, creatures with too many teeth, and things that didn't look like they belonged in the natural world.
"How long do we have?" Darius asked.
"Maybe ten minutes before they reach the main gates," Seraphina answered. "Everyone's meeting in the great hall. They're scared, Darius. They're looking to you for answers."
But Darius was looking at me. "The choice isn't just about surrender anymore," he said softly. "If we fight and lose, everyone dies. If we run, Morgana will hunt us down. But if you could find the StarCrown..."
"I'd have the power to protect them," I finished. "But we don't even know where it is. The clue about starlight hitting earth could mean anywhere."
"Not anywhere," Seraphina said suddenly. "I know where that is."
We both stared at her.
"The old cemetery outside Millfield," she continued. "It's built on the original meeting place where the first vampires made their pact with celestial spirits. Local tales say that on clear nights, starlight shines brighter there than anywhere else."
My heart started racing. "How far is it?"
"Twenty minutes if we run at full speed," Seraphina said. "But Lyra, that's right where Morgana's army is positioned. It's like she knew..."
The realization hit me like a physical blow. "She did know. That's why she's here. She's not just trying to catch me - she's trying to stop me from getting the crown."
"It's a trap," Darius said sadly. "She's forcing us to choose between saving Haven's Rest and walking straight into her hands."
The sound of howling filled the air - not normal wolf screams, but something twisted and wrong that made my skin crawl.
"They're starting the attack," Seraphina whispered.
I closed my eyes, trying to think. Everyone I cared about was counting on me to make the right choice. But what was the right choice? Try to fight an army I couldn't beat? Surrender myself to save others? Or risk everything on finding a crown that might not even exist?
"There's another option," I said slowly, opening my eyes. "What if we split up?"
"Absolutely not," Darius said instantly.
"Listen to me," I insisted. "You and Seraphina stay here and hold off the attack as long as you can. I'll go alone to find the StarCrown. If I can get it, I come back with enough power to beat Morgana. If I can't..."
"If you can't, you die alone in a cemetery while we die here," Darius ended. "That's not a plan, Lyra. That's death."
"It's the only chance we have," I urged. "And I won't let everyone else pay for my bloodline's mistakes."
Before Darius could stop me, I ran toward the window. My power was already growing inside me, silver light starting to glow around my hands.
"Lyra, don't!" Darius shouted.
But I was already jumping. My magic caught me like invisible wings, letting me soar over the heads of Morgana's army toward the faraway cemetery.
As I flew through the night sky, I heard Morgana's laughter echoing from somewhere below.
"Clever girl," her voice carried on the wind. "But not smart enough. You're flying straight into my trap."
That's when I saw them. Dozens of shadow wolves were already at the graveyard, surrounding a single grave that glowed with pale light. And standing on top of that grave, holding something that sparkled like caught starlight, was Morgana herself.
She was holding the StarCrown.
"Looking for this?" she called out as I landed hard on the grave ground. "Your parents were so obvious. They thought they could hide it from me forever."
"Give it back," I ordered, silver light crackling around my fists. "It belongs to my family."
"Your family is dead," Morgana said with a wicked smile. "And soon you'll join them. But first, you're going to watch me use your crown to become the most powerful being who ever lived."
She placed the StarCrown on her head, and instantly, the cemetery filled with blinding white light. When my vision cleared, Morgana looked totally different. Her eyes were pure silver now, and power radiated from her like heat from a fire.
"Thank you, little princess," she said, her voice echoing with unnatural power. "You've given me exactly what I needed."
As her shadow wolves started circling me, I realized the horrible truth.
I hadn't walked into her trap.
I had become it.
