CHAPTER SIX
Pat sat in the bathroom tub thinking about the opprobrious thing she had done. The pain she felt in her tight area still hurt. The hot water was not helping and the blood wouldn’t stop gushing. She became scared. She did not know what to do. She had heard stories about the first time blood but never knew it would be this much. She used the female sanitary pad after the hot bath and went to bed wearing a see through night gown. She wore something that light because she felt hotness from inside her. She did not know when she passed out.
A loud voice of someone calling her from inside her room woke her up the next morning: “Patricia! Patricia!! Patricia!!!” The voice is very familiar. Even in her sleep, she could tell that it was Sammy. She wished the ground could open and swallow the whole of her bed. She couldn’t imagine looking him straight in his eyes. Fortunately, when she opened her eyes, she realized she slept facing the wall. She did not turn to look at him. She could tell he was standing by the bed side. His voice was near. There were traces of anger in his voice. She had prayed he would forget about the night but it seems he remembered. If not, he wouldn’t have barged into her room without prior notice; she thought.
“What happened last night?” He asked fuming with anger.
“You came home drunk.” She replied.
Sweat went down her spine. She tried to swallow the hardness threatening her throat which had made them dried. She knew Sammy couldn’t recollect what happened in the night so she pretended not to understand.
“That is not what am asking. Did we make love yesterday? Because am sure am not dreaming. It was too real.” He said curtly.
It’s true it wasn’t a dream but it’s too embarrassing to admit that. Patricia decides to stick to her lie because she could not bear the embarrassment that would come with admitting it. After all, this man standing before her had made it clear through his actions that he does not feel good about what had happened.
“Don’t be ridiculous. That can’t happen between us. It was probably a dream. Maybe because you had too much to drink.” She lied.
She remained on same position (backing him) preventing a possible eye contact. She could not look him in the eyes. After last night she was too embarrassed to look at him. She hoped Sammy Won’t push it any further.
“What is wrong with you, Pat? Look at me and answer me honestly. How could you seduce a drunk man into making love with you? You’re not as decent as you look. You are promiscuous.” He said.
She became angry and couldn’t take the false claim anymore. He was the guilty one here after all; he seduced her. She could not believe he accused her of being sluttish. She is not unchaste, she wouldn’t have given her body out so easily to any other man. He was the only man whom she has given the right to her body. For the past twenty six years of her life no man had gain the access to her body. It hurt her pride the way he thinks she is blowzy. The man she gave her whole body and heart was taking her for granted? She became upset and flared up. She couldn’t stand him disrespecting her. She turned to him scowling.
“What did you just call me? I’m not a cheap slut to do such a thing. I let you have your way because you are the only man who could have my body.” She said without thinking.
She does not intend to say such a thing to his face. Admitting how she felt when he bluntly reject her. She just don’t know where that came from.
“Why are you angry when you have things your way? You lie in bed with me because you want all this?” He said swinging is hands round the room.
He meant his riches. Did he just assert that she is after his property? He seem not to care about what she said or has chosen to process the content. For the past twenty six years of her life she has never appeared that terrified. She could no longer hold back the tears that burns her eyes and spurts down her cheeks.
“You are not satisfied with all I gave you? You wanted more. You should have just asked and I would give. Why did you want to tame me with a child?” He added without compassion.
A child? Why would he think of such? Does he think a night stand would get anyone pregnant? Man are clearly inexperienced; she thought. All these flying accusations only made her regretted and hated last night actions more than she imagined. Sammy was crossing the line already.
“I told you nothing happened between us. Stop calling me names.” She yelled blocking her ears with her palms.
She lied again. But if the lie would make him stop, then she would be pleased. She was tired already.
“Shut up, you bloody liar!” He shouted apoplectically.
He dragged her hand forcing her out of bed. The night wear was revealing, she was hesitant but he was stronger. “Come here,” he bellowed.
“Please, the dress is revealing. I can’t go out like this. Please.” She pleaded as he dragged her out of the room.
“What are you trying to conceal? Didn’t you throw yourself cheaply at me the last night?” he hissed.
Her lips became stiffened. She wrapped her other hand around her chest. She could not understand where he was dragging her to. The pain between her thighs was still hurting and her feet are too heavy to be lifted. She would have just remained in bed all day. She could not complain but endure the pain. He dragged her to the passageway. There was blood stains which extended from her room to his. He took her along to his room. His bedspread was stained with blood.
“Will you still continue to deny? This is a blood I’m sure came from your period. You bed with me because you knew you’re due for your monthly period. What is your aim?” He yelled.
She wanted to scream out loud that is not a blood from her menses and she’s not even due until another month. She just finished her period few days ago. But something she could not explain has tied down her tongue. She was too ashamed now. She wished this never happened. She had started to regret the night before. Suddenly she felt something like a pain sensation in her head, her eyes were becoming yellow. Slowly, it became blurry and later everything went blank. She held her head with one of her hand and the other one on her face. She could not explain what was happening to her as she slowly collapsed on the ground.
“Stop pretending and talk now.” Sammy kicks.
But there was no response. He called for help and lifted her in his arms.
