Lina's POV

The sudden silence that follows Morgana's death feels surreal after the chaos of magical combat. Around us, Paul's hybrid creatures lie motionless, their unnatural forms finally at peace. Elena's broken sobs echo through the facility as she cradles her sister's body, and for a moment, I actually believe we've won.

That moment doesn't last long.

"You," Paul's voice cuts through the air like a blade, filled with such raw fury that it makes my enhanced hearing ring. "You destroyed everything!"

I turn to face him, still maintaining my protective shield around Leo and Kayla, but I can see that Paul has changed. Where before he was calculating and controlled, now he's something else entirely – a wild animal backed into a corner, all pretense of civilization stripped away.

His eyes have turned completely black, and dark veins are visible beneath his skin, pulsing with some kind of malevolent energy. Whatever magic Morgana had been using to enhance him, her death seems to have destabilized it rather than stopped it.

"Thirty years!" he screams, spittle flying from his lips. "Thirty years I've planned this! Thirty years I've waited for you, prepared for you, dreamed of you! And you throw it all away for what? For him?"

Paul points at Leo with a hand that's begun to elongate into claws. "That pathetic excuse for an Alpha who couldn't even protect his own parents?"

Through our bond, I feel Leo's fury spike at the mention of his father, but I send calming energy through our connection. Not yet. Let me handle this.

"Paul," I say, keeping my voice level despite the terror clawing at my chest, "it's over. Morgana's dead, your army is gone. There's nothing left to fight for."

"Nothing left?" Paul laughs, and the sound is completely unhinged. "You are everything! You are the Moon Wolf, the key to unlimited power, and you will be mine if I have to drag you back to my compound as a broken shell!"

He lunges forward with inhuman speed, his transformed claws aimed directly at my heart. I'm already moving to dodge when Kayla suddenly appears between us, her smaller frame throwing itself into Paul's path.

"No!" she screams, and I watch in horror as Paul's claws sink deep into her chest, the force of his attack lifting her off her feet.

Time seems to slow as Paul realizes what he's done. His momentum carries him forward, driving the claws deeper, and Kayla's blood begins to pool on the concrete floor. But instead of the triumphant snarl I expected, confusion flickers across Paul's face.

"You're not..." he begins, then staggers backward as Kayla's weight pulls free from his claws.

Kayla collapses to her knees, her hands pressed to the gaping wounds in her chest. Blood seeps between her fingers in rhythmic pulses that tell me her heart has been damaged. Without immediate medical intervention, she has minutes at most.

"Kayla!" I drop my protective shield and rush to her side, pressing my hands over hers to try to stem the bleeding. "Hold on, just hold on. I can heal you, I can—"

"No," Kayla whispers, her voice surprisingly peaceful. "Don't waste your energy on me, Luna. You'll need it for what's coming."

"I'm not letting you die," I insist, trying to channel my healing power into her wounds. But something's wrong – the energy won't flow properly, as if it's being blocked or redirected.

Kayla sees my confusion and gives me a sad smile. "The claws were poisoned," she explains softly. "Some kind of anti-magic toxin. I can feel it spreading."

My heart breaks as I realize she's right. The wounds are turning black around the edges, and I can sense the foreign substance interfering with my abilities.

"I'm sorry," I whisper, tears streaming down my face. "I'm so sorry, Kayla. If I had been faster, if I had—"

"Stop." Kayla's hand finds mine, her grip surprisingly strong despite her condition. "Listen to me, Lina. I've done terrible things. I betrayed you, I hurt people you care about, I helped that monster because I was jealous and stupid and cruel."

She coughs, and blood specks her lips, but her eyes remain focused on mine.

"But these last few weeks, helping you escape, seeing you fight for everyone... it reminded me who I used to be. Who I could have been." Her voice grows softer, but more urgent. "I got to be brave, Lina. For the first time in my life, I got to do something that mattered."

"You matter," I tell her fiercely. "You saved us. You saved everyone."

Kayla's smile grows wider, and for a moment, she looks like the young woman she might have been if Paul MacKenzie had never entered her life.

"We won," she whispers, wonder in her voice. "Morgana's dead, the creatures are gone. We actually won."

"We won," I agree, my voice breaking.

"Don't be sad," Kayla says, her eyes beginning to lose focus. "Promise me you won't be sad. I got to help save the world, and I got to call you friend, even if it was only for a little while. That's more than I ever thought I deserved."

Her grip on my hand loosens, and her breathing becomes shallow and irregular.

"Tell Leo... tell him thank you. For giving me a chance to be better." Her voice is barely a whisper now. "And Lina? When you and Leo have children someday... remember that love is stronger than hate. Always."

Kayla's eyes flutter closed, her breathing so faint I can barely detect it. Her pulse is erratic and weak, but still there. I press my ear to her chest and catch the faintest sound of her heart struggling to beat.

"She's still alive," I gasp, looking up desperately. "Elena! She's still breathing!"

Elena doesn't respond immediately. She's still kneeling beside Morgana's body, her shoulders shaking with grief that's too profound for tears. The sight of her—broken, lost, staring at her sister's lifeless form—makes my heart clench with sympathy even as panic builds in my chest.

"Elena!" I call more urgently.

She looks up slowly, and I see the devastation in her eyes. For a moment, she seems completely disconnected from reality, lost in a world where she's just killed the person she loved most.

"She's gone," Elena whispers, her voice hollow. "My sister is gone, and I... I killed her."

"Elena, listen to me," I say firmly, trying to break through her shock. "Kayla is dying. She's still alive, but barely. Can you help her?"

Elena blinks, confusion flickering across her face as she tries to process what I'm saying. Slowly, her professional instincts begin to surface through the grief.

"Kayla?" she says uncertainly, then seems to truly see the blood for the first time. Her healer training kicks in, and she crawls over on trembling hands and knees.

"Oh gods," she breathes, her hands immediately glowing with diagnostic magic. "The toxin... it's the same one Morgana used on the Northern Pack warriors. Designed specifically to counter healing magic."

"Can you save her?" I ask desperately.

Elena's hands hover over Kayla's wounds, and I can see her forcing herself to focus through her grief. "Not here. The antidote requires specific equipment, precise measurements. My clinic..." She stops, looking around the ruined facility. "But we'll never make it through the main entrance. Paul's people could still be out there, and she's too unstable to transport normally."

When I look up, Paul is staring at Kayla's unconscious form with an expression of complete bewilderment.

"She wasn't supposed to interfere," he mutters, backing away from us. "The plan was perfect. Morgana said it was perfect. You were supposed to come willingly, and then..."

He stops, his black eyes snapping back into focus as the reality of his situation hits him.

"But it doesn't matter," he says, his voice growing stronger. "I don't need Morgana's magic anymore. I don't need the creatures. I just need you."

Paul begins to advance again, but this time Leo steps between us, his own transformation beginning. Shadow emerges partially, giving Leo enhanced strength and speed while keeping him in human form.

"You want her?" Leo snarls, his voice carrying the full authority of an Alpha. "You go through me first."

"Gladly," Paul replies, and lunges.

The two men collide with bone-crushing force, Paul's magically enhanced strength meeting Leo's Alpha power and Shadow's influence. They roll across the floor, trading devastating blows that would cripple normal humans.

"Elena," I call out urgently, "how long does Kayla have?"

Elena's voice is steadier now, her professional demeanor slowly reasserting itself despite the tears still streaming down her face. "Minutes. Maybe ten at most before the toxin reaches her brain stem."

"Then we go through the forest," I decide. "I can carry her, and you can guide us to your clinic."

"Lina, that's three miles of rough terrain in the dark," Elena protests. "With Paul's remaining forces potentially hunting us—"

"Then we make it work," I interrupt. "Because the alternative is watching her die."

A tremendous crash cuts through our conversation as Leo hurls Paul into one of the support beams hard enough to crack the concrete. Paul recovers quickly, slashing his claws across Leo's chest and leaving deep gouges in his shirt and the skin beneath.

"Leo!" I start toward them, but Elena grabs my arm with surprising strength.

"If you get caught up in that fight, we all die," she says, and there's something in her voice—a steel forged by devastating loss—that makes me listen. "Your mate is strong, Lina. Stronger than Paul realizes. But this girl..." She looks down at Kayla with professional assessment warring against personal anguish. "She won't survive if we don't move now."

Through our bond, I feel Leo's understanding mixed with fierce protectiveness. He ducks under Paul's wild swing and manages to catch my eye across the facility.

"Go!" he shouts between dodging increasingly erratic attacks. "Save her! I can handle this bastard!"

Paul's laugh is maniacal as he overhears. "Yes, run away, little Luna! Leave your precious Alpha to face me alone, just like his father did!"

The taunt sends rage flooding through our bond, but Leo's response is cold calculation rather than fury. I can see that Paul's enhanced abilities are becoming more unstable by the minute—the dark veins under his skin spreading faster, his movements becoming wilder and less controlled.

"Paul's magic is burning him out," I realize, speaking quickly to Leo through our bond. "The enhancement is toxic without Morgana's control. You just need to stay alive until it destroys him."

Leo's response comes back filled with grim determination: "I've got this, love. Save Kayla. I'll be right behind you."

Elena is already carefully lifting Kayla's limp form, her movements precise despite her emotional state. "I can stabilize her vital signs during transport," she says, her voice growing stronger with each word. "But you'll need to clear the path and watch for threats. The forest isn't safe—there could be stragglers from Paul's forces."

I take one last look at Leo, who gives me a fierce nod before throwing himself back into combat with renewed intensity.

"End this," I tell him through our bond, pouring all my love and confidence into those two words.
