Lina's POV

The antiseptic smell of Elena's clinic hits me like a wall as we rush through the doors, Kayla's limp form in my arms. Her breathing is so shallow it's almost imperceptible, and the black veins from Paul's toxin have spread further up her neck since we escaped the facility.

"Put her on the examination table," Elena commands, her healer instincts overriding her grief as she quickly gathers supplies from various cabinets. "Quickly, but gently."

I carefully lay Kayla down, my hands shaking from exhaustion and adrenaline. The memory of Paul's claws tearing through Kayla's chest is still burned into my mind – the sickening sound, the way she collapsed, the immediate spread of those black veins from his toxin. I don't know what happened to Paul after we escaped, but his poison continues to work its way through Kayla's system, and time is running out.

"How is this possible?" I ask Elena as she begins her examination, placing her hands just above Kayla's chest and letting her healing magic flow outward in diagnostic waves. "She stopped breathing. I felt her... leave."

Elena's frown deepens as she continues her scan. "The toxin didn't just attack her body," she explains, her voice tight with concentration. "It severed the connection between her soul and her physical form. She's trapped in a kind of limbo – not fully alive, but not completely dead either."

My heart sinks. "Can you fix it?"

"I'm not sure," Elena admits, wiping sweat from her brow. "This type of damage... it's beyond standard healing magic. The soul tether has been poisoned, corrupted. It would require someone with incredible power and precision to cleanse it and reestablish the connection."

She looks at me meaningfully, and I understand what she's not saying.

"You want me to try," I say quietly.

"It's dangerous," Elena confirms immediately. "The process would require you to link your soul directly to Kayla's and guide hers back to her body while simultaneously purging the toxin. If anything goes wrong, you could end up trapped in the same limbo, or worse."

I look down at Kayla's pale face, remembering not just her final sacrifice, but all the times before. How she helped me escape from Paul's compound when she could have let me die. How she risked her own safety to get me information about his plans. How she stood between me and danger even when she had every reason to let me face it alone.

"I have to try," I say firmly.

Elena studies my face. "Lina, I know you feel responsible for what happened to her, but—"

"This isn't about guilt," I interrupt, though part of me knows that's not entirely true. "Kayla saved my life multiple times, Elena. Even when she was still working for Paul, even when she had reasons to hate me. She chose to protect me when it mattered most."

I place my hand gently on Kayla's forehead, feeling the unnatural coolness of her skin. "How can I do less for her? How can I just let her drift away when she threw herself between me and Paul's claws without hesitation?"

Elena nods slowly. "If you're determined to do this, I'll help guide the process. But you need to understand – this will drain you completely. Your body might not be able to handle the strain."

"I understand." The weight of responsibility settles over me like a familiar cloak. "She didn't abandon me when she could have. I won't abandon her now."

Elena begins preparing the ritual space, drawing intricate symbols around Kayla's body with what looks like silver dust. "These will help contain and focus the magic," she explains as she works. "You'll need to place your hands directly over her heart and open yourself completely to the connection. I'll monitor both of you and try to guide the process."

I take a deep breath and position myself beside Kayla's still form. Up close, I can see how young she really is – probably no more than twenty-five, with her whole life still ahead of her if we can save her.

"Ready?" Elena asks.

I nod and place my hands over Kayla's chest, feeling the barely-there flutter of her damaged heart. Closing my eyes, I let my consciousness expand outward, searching for the thread of her soul that should be anchored here.

The moment I make contact with the severed connection, agony rips through my entire being. It feels like touching a live wire made of pure anguish, and I have to bite my lip to keep from screaming. The toxin is still active in Kayla's spiritual essence, a writhing mass of corruption that burns everything it touches.

Focus, I tell myself. Push through the pain.

I begin the delicate work of wrapping my own soul around the damaged tether, using my power to slowly burn away the poison. Each second feels like an eternity as the toxin fights back, sending waves of agony through my consciousness that make my physical body convulse.

Somewhere in the distance, I can hear Elena's voice guiding me through the process, but it sounds muffled and far away. The real world is becoming increasingly irrelevant as I dive deeper into the spiritual realm where Kayla's soul drifts, lost and alone.

When I finally find her, she's curled into a ball in an empty void, her spiritual form flickering like a candle in the wind.

Kayla, I call out, my own soul-voice echoing strangely in this place between life and death.

She looks up, and her eyes are filled with a kind of resigned despair that breaks my heart. Lina? You shouldn't be here. It's not safe.

I'm here to bring you home, I tell her, extending my hand. Come with me.

No. She shakes her head, backing away. I don't deserve this. After everything I've done to you, all the pain I caused... just let me go.

That's not how this works. I move closer despite the increasing pain as the toxin tries to infect my own soul. You saved my life, Kayla. More than once. You chose to protect me even when it would have been easier to let Paul have what he wanted.

I also hurt you, she whispers. I betrayed you, I helped him capture you. I was part of your suffering.

And then you chose differently, I say firmly. You could have let me die in that facility, but you didn't. You could have stayed loyal to Paul until the end, but you didn't. You threw yourself between me and those claws knowing it might kill you.

The corruption in the void around us grows stronger, feeding off my presence, but I don't care. I reach for Kayla again, this time managing to grasp her hand.

I owe you a debt, I tell her simply. And I always pay my debts.

You don't owe me anything, Kayla protests, but she doesn't pull away from my grip.

Yes, I do. I begin the process of guiding her soul back toward her body, using my own life force to rebuild the severed tether. You saved me when you didn't have to. You chose courage over fear, protection over self-preservation. That matters, Kayla. That has to matter.

The toxin fights us every step of the way, and I can feel pieces of my own essence burning away as I shield Kayla from its attacks.

Lina, stop! Kayla suddenly realizes what I'm doing. You're killing yourself to save me!

Then we'll be even, I tell her, pouring more of my power into the connection. You were willing to die for me. I can do the same for you.

The journey back to her body feels endless, each step requiring more energy than I have to give. But somehow, we make it. I feel Kayla's soul settle back into her physical form, the tether reestablishing itself with a sensation like puzzle pieces clicking into place.

As consciousness returns to the real world, I'm dimly aware of Elena's concerned voice beside me, and underneath it all, the steady sound of Kayla's now-regular breathing.

We did it, I think with satisfaction. Debt paid.

That's when the full cost of the ritual hits me. Every cell in my body screams in protest as the last of my energy reserves are depleted. My legs give out completely, and I feel myself starting to collapse.

The clinic door bursts open just as my vision begins to tunnel to black.

The last thing I hear before unconsciousness claims me is the clinic door slamming open and Leo's voice, raw with terror and fury: "What the hell happened? Lina!"

As I slip under, I feel his hands lifting me, feel the warmth of our bond wrapping around me like a protective blanket. Leo is here. Leo will take care of everything.

I can let go now.
