Chapter 22: Unwanted Visitors

Chapter 22: Unwanted Visitors

The study door creaked open, signaling an unexpected arrival.

Sofie moved first, her heels clicking sharply on the marble floor as she approached with deliberate grace. Her smile was sweet but laced with calculation. “Joe,” she said smoothly, “It’s been far too long.”

A young man lingered just within the doorway, his authoritative presence undeniable. Wearing a fitted charcoal suit, his blond hair a bit disheveled and his blue eyes keen, he radiated refined charisma.

Sofie glanced between Joe and the study. “I’ll leave you to it,” she said with a touch of curiosity. “Let me know if you need anything.” With a smile, she disappeared into the mansion’s shadows.

Joe’s smile faded as she left. He turned, walking swiftly toward the study where Alexander waited. The tension between them was always palpable.

Alexander sat reclined in a leather chair, absorbed in his book. The fire crackled softly, casting fleeting shadows, but his expression remained unreadable, unaffected by Joe’s presence.

Joe stepped inside, closing the door behind him. “What are you doing here?” Alexander asked without looking up.

“I’m your younger brother, remember?” Joe replied with a faint smile, amusement in his voice.

Alexander’s icy-blue eyes remained fixed on the page. “I was never your brother,” he said flatly.

Joe laughed quietly. "Although we have different mothers, we share the same father. That matters in some way, right?" He approached nearer.

“Get to the point,” Alexander said, flipping a page. “And then get out.”

Joe stopped a few feet away, hands in his pockets. “Father’s hosting a celebration for his birthday soon. He sent me to personally invite you.”

Alexander’s expression didn’t change, but his jaw tightened. “Tell that old man I’m not coming.”

Joe tilted his head, studying him. “You’ve never attended any of Father’s events before. Don’t you think it’s time to make an..?”

“I don’t care about his events or his pathetic attempts at playing family,” Alexander shot back, rising fluidly. His towering frame made him all the more imposing as he fixed Joe with a glare. “Tell him not to waste his time, and I'll tell you the same. Never come here again.”

With that, Alexander walked past, leaving tension hanging in the air. Joe remained unfazed. It was the same response he always got, yet there was a flicker of something unreadable in his expression as he watched his stepbrother disappear through the door.

“Noted…big brother,” Joe muttered to himself, turning to leave.

Hours Later

I sat by the window in my room, staring out at the moonlit garden below. The mansion was quiet, its silence almost suffocating. The days here blurred together, a monotonous cycle of confinement and fleeting interactions.

I spoke aloud, a habit I’d picked up to combat solitude. “Another day, another..”

The door creaked open, cutting me off. My heart jumped, and I turned sharply to see who it was.

Vee entered quietly, a simple yet elegant dress draped over her arm. She met my gaze, offering a sympathetic smile that spoke volumes.

“Miss Dysis,” Vee said softly, “you’ll need to change.”

I glared at the dress, the weight of my imprisonment settling over me. “Why?”

Vee stepped forward, silently helping me out of my clothes. I hesitated but allowed her assistance as the soft fabric of the red dress skimmed my skin, sending a shiver down my spine. It was simple yet elegant, hugging my figure perfectly. For a brief moment, despite everything, I felt a spark of confidence.

“What does he want?” I muttered, adjusting the sleeves as Vee fastened the gown.

Vee’s touch was gentle. “You can use this to get some fresh air, like you wanted.”

Fresh air. I could feel the underlying warning in her words. This was about control, and I sensed the noose tightening.

I stared at my reflection, the girl in the mirror almost unrecognizable, stronger, braver, perhaps.

“The house master is waiting,” Vee said, breaking my thoughts.

Gratitude flickered through me for her steady presence, but I quickly pushed it aside. Taking a deep breath, I lifted my chin and moved toward the door.

John stood outside, his posture calm and unwavering. Straightening my back, I summoned every ounce of courage, ready for whatever Alexander had planned.

Sofie’s heels clicked sharply as she entered the grand hallway, her gaze flicking over every detail of the mansion’s opulence. Her eyes narrowed when they landed on me.

I stood near the stairs, bathed in the soft glow of the chandelier above. My beauty was undeniable, almost ethereal, like I belonged in a dream.

My honey-brown hair cascaded in soft waves, catching the light with every subtle movement. My skin, flawless and glowing, shimmered under the soft light. But it wasn’t just my features, my presence commanded attention. The elegance in my every movement, the grace with which I carried myself, left Sofie momentarily breathless.

My eyes, a stunning mix of brown and orange, held Sofie’s gaze with fierce yet vulnerable intensity.

I met Sofie’s stare, the air heavy with a silent challenge. Her smile was perfect, but there was a brief hesitation before it returned to its usual poise.

“And who might you be?” Sofie’s voice was smooth, but the underlying edge was unmistakable, sharp enough to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand at attention.

“I’m Dysis…” I began, but my words faltered under her cold scrutiny. My name felt fragile under her gaze.

Sofie’s eyes narrowed slightly, as if she had already sized me up in an instant. “Are you planning to join Alex outside?” she asked, her tone casual, but possessiveness threaded through the question, a subtle warning wrapped in polite words.

I hesitated, her words hanging in the air like a quiet challenge. Studying her cool, calculating expression, I found it unsettling. “Yes,” I answered softly but unwavering, “I am.”

Sofie’s smile returned, though it held a touch of bitterness. “You should know,” she said, her voice lowering just a fraction, “that Alex is... particular about who he lets into his world. But then again, I’m sure you already know that.”

My gaze shifted, my heart beginning to pound as the weight of Sofie’s words settled in. I didn’t know the full extent of the dynamics between Sofie and Alexander, but I could feel the undercurrent of tension, like a storm waiting to break.

After a last look at Sofie, I pivoted and headed towards the front doors, where the evening breeze was waiting. My heart pounded, a blend of thrill and anxiety overwhelming me as I approached the ajar door.

Outside, the glossy black vehicle was stationed against the dwindling daylight. The refreshing evening wind flowed through the atmosphere, and there, beside the car with an authoritative stance, stood Alexander.

His impeccably fitted black suit embraced his athletic physique, radiating strength. His intense blue gaze fixed on the mansion's doorway, anticipating my arrival. The night breeze gently ruffled his dark hair, yet his expression stayed inscrutable and intense.

My heart quickened with each step I moved closer to him. The gravity of the moment pressed down on me, my heart racing in my chest as I got closer. He possessed an attraction, a trait that was simultaneously thrilling and intimidating. As I moved closer, my mind grew more and more crowded with uncertainty and thrill.

And yet, regardless of all the questions, one truth was clear. the bond between us was tangible, and I sensed it profoundly inside me.

When I got to the final step, I halted, absorbing the complete view of him. He turned his gaze toward me, meeting my eyes with an expression that was difficult to interpret.

I inhaled deeply, readying myself for whatever this moment would bring. The atmosphere surrounding us buzzed with excitement, and as the evening sky deepened into night, it seemed like the start of something, something exhilarating and risky.
