Chapter 23: The Unspoken tension between them
“Dysis,” Alexander said at last, his voice low and velvety, carrying the weight of command yet softened by an undercurrent of something she couldn’t place. “You’re late.”
She swallowed, trying to steady the flutter in her chest. “I wasn’t aware I was being timed.”
A shadow of a smirk tugged at his lips, but it vanished almost as quickly as it appeared. He stepped forward, closing the remaining distance between them. His eyes swept over me briefly, not in judgment but with an intensity that left my feeling exposed, seen.
“You’re here now,” he said simply, his tone quieter but no less firm.
I nodded, my voice caught somewhere in my throat. I moved toward the car, but before I could reach the door, Alexander was already there, his hand resting lightly on the handle. He held it open for me, his gaze never leaving mine.
“Go in.” He said almost like a command
I hesitated, the silence thick with unspoken anticipation. I glanced at his outstretched hand, weighing the choice before me. Should I trust him, even for an instant? Fear warred with an unexpected yearning for freedom. After a moment of uncertainty, she took a deep breath
and went into the car.
As the car pulled away from the mansion, the distant city lights began to twinkle like stars fallen to Earth. I turned to Alexander, still on edge. “Where are we going?” I asked, suspicion lacing my voice, mingling with curiosity. Why is he taking me and not Sofie?
For a heartbeat, Alexander was silent. Then, with a hint of amusement dancing in his eyes.
“How did you remember you locked up a human in your house?” Dysis asked with a bit of anger in her voice
A faint smile tugged at Alex's lips. “Someone reminded me” he replied, his tone flat yet teasing.
Was it Vee I thought, my mouth twitched, caught between disbelief and amusement. “Thanks to whoever it was,” I muttered, feeling an odd mix of relief and anger.
As they traversed the city streets, my heart raced with anticipation. I couldn’t predict what lay ahead, but it was undeniably better than the stifling confines of the mansion. Soon, they arrived at another grand structure, a mansion of sorts, yet distinct from the one they had left behind.
“Where are we?” I asked, glancing at Alexander, who remained silent.
John opened the car door, and Alexander stepped out first, leaving Dysis to be helped out by John.
I swayed a bit in my heels, getting used to the strange feeling, but soon found my footing again.
My eyes expanded as I absorbed the scene in front of me. The location looked like a luxurious restaurant, designed for the high-class, with each table surrounded by its own sumptuous alcove similar to personal tents. Luxurious textiles draped throughout the area, forming a cozy haven that protected patrons from the external environment. The gentle radiance of chandeliers enveloped the tents in a cozy light, highlighting the elaborate features of the decor, from comfy seating to elegant table arrangements decorated with fine china and crystal glass, all made with meticulous care.
“This is… unlike anything I've ever seen,” I whispered, awed by the magnificence enveloping me.
A surge of doubt engulfed me as I examined the luxury. It was a realm distinctly different from my own, where affluence emanated from every side: the elegantly attired guests enjoying their dishes and the diligent staff moving smoothly among tables with expert grace.
As I got used to the strange high heels, my heart raced, caught between the appeal of this lavish lifestyle and the persistent doubts echoing in my thoughts.
Alexander locked eyes with me, a familiar smirk tugging at the edges of his mouth, as though he could decipher the storm of thoughts roiling in my mind.
“Need help?” he asked, his voice a mix of playful teasing and genuine concern as he extended his hand toward me.
I hesitated for a heartbeat, assessing the offer. But a surge of determination coursed through me. I turned away from his outstretched hand, brushing past him with a sense of defiance, determined to prove that I wouldn’t surrender to the charm of this lavish world or rely on his help. Even as I walked beside him, I mind raced, struggling to comprehend the man guiding me and the world he was ushering me into.
As they ventured further inside, a vibrant group of well-dressed staff members approached, their energy infectious. They beamed with warmth, their youthful enthusiasm sharply contrasting with the sumptuous surroundings.
“Welcome, Mr. Alexander! We’ve been expecting you,” one of the young men greeted, his voice cheerful and inviting. “And this must be the lovely lady Dysis. It’s an honor to have you with us tonight.”
They know who I am?, I thought to myself. I felt a blush creep up my cheeks at the unexpected compliment, my heart fluttering at the warmth of their reception. I managed a small smile in return, still grappling with the surreal nature of my circumstances.
“Please, allow us to escort you to your table,” a waiter greeted, leading them to a private booth in the corner, shrouded in soft, ambient lighting. I slid into my seat, maintaining a careful distance from Alexander, who settled across from me with an air of ease, as if he owned the very space we occupied.
The server presented the menu to us, and I compelled myself to concentrate on the printed text, even as my thoughts spun with uncertainty and anxiety. I sensed Alexander’s gaze penetrating the barrier of my defenses. When I eventually glanced up, I noticed him examining me with an intensity that made my throat feel parched.
The waiter’s shining grin lit up the shadowy environment. "Can I take your order at this moment?"
With a slight nod, Alexander gestured for me to proceed, his demeanor changing as he briefly adopted a facade of normalcy. "What would you prefer to order, ma'am?"
After a short pause, I concluded, "I'll take the strawberry cake and a chamomile tea, please."
The server recorded her selections before facing Alexander. "And for you, Sir?"
“I would like the filet mignon, medium-rare, along with a glass of your best red wine,” he responded, his voice calm and commanding.
As the server departed, a fleeting sense of relief enveloped me, the strain between us briefly alleviated by the process of placing the order. Yet the echoes of our earlier discussion lingered, reminding me that the risks remained significant, and I was still ensnared in a reality I couldn’t grasp.
To keep myself occupied, I concentrated on the flowers embellishing the tent, making an effort to avoid looking at Alexander. The brilliant flowers, roses, lilies, and peonies, were arranged elegantly, their hues striking against the gentle white material.
“Will you be ignoring me the entire night?” he inquired, a playful tone in his voice.
