Chapter 74
Joshua couldn't erase the hurt he caused Scarlett four years ago.
Now Scarlett couldn't get married because she wasn't a virgin anymore, and he bore some responsibility for that.
Even though he knew very clearly that he didn't love Scarlett.
Joshua looked at Scarlett and said, "I'm only keeping Ella here to punish her for making my grandfather so angry he died. I will divorce her."
Scarlett choked up and asked, "Then will you marry me?"
Scarlett cried pitifully, looking so fragile and heartbreaking.
Any man who saw her would feel protective of her.
Joshua was no exception.
But his answer was vague. "If you find someone more suitable for you, I'll support you. But if..."
"Joshua, I only love you."
Scarlett interrupted him, her voice still tearful. "From the moment I became your woman, I've never thought about any other man."
"If I can't be your wife in this life, I'd rather die."
Scarlett made her words sound as final as possible.
If Joshua didn't marry her in the future, she would pretend to be depressed and hurt herself.
Anyway, for Joshua's sake, no matter what methods she had to use, she would get what she wanted.
Joshua really couldn't listen anymore and waved his hand. "Go back to your room and rest. I still have a lot of work to handle."
Scarlett nodded and left.
Karen arranged a guest room for her, but she didn't stay there. Instead, she went to stay in the secondary bedroom where Ella usually slept when she and Joshua slept in separate rooms.
She understood Joshua - he wouldn't do anything with her before the divorce.
Moving directly into the master bedroom would push too hard and only make Joshua dislike her.
After finishing work, Joshua came downstairs.
Seeing Karen making something in the kitchen, he walked over and asked, "Where's the kid?"
Karen saw him and reported respectfully, "Dorian is in the room with his mother. Fortunately Dr. Harris came in time, otherwise Mrs. Thomas..."
Karen hesitated, seeing Samuel come out of the nanny's room, and quickly continued making the medicine.
Joshua also saw Samuel and walked to the living room to sit down, asking casually, "She didn't die, did she?"
Samuel sat down next to him, his handsome face showing obvious concern.
"The high fever almost damaged her brain. It still hasn't gone down. She needs to rest for some time to recover."
He hadn't expected Ella to be this seriously ill.
If he had arrived half an hour later, she probably would have died.
Joshua didn't care at all. "It would be better if she died. That way she could join my grandfather."
Samuel sighed and said coldly, "Ask yourself honestly, do you really want her to die? She's someone who's already died once, and the you I saw back then wasn't like this."
It hadn't been that long ago.
When the police announced the news of Ella's accident, Joshua cried so heartbrokenly.
He kept blaming himself and feeling guilty.
Samuel didn't believe at all that Joshua really wanted Ella to die.
Joshua looked uncomfortable, his eyes flickering.
"Last time was because she hadn't done anything wrong, but this time, she made my grandfather so angry he died."
"So you already knew those two kids were hers?"
Samuel pressed.
Joshua didn't deny it, but felt embarrassed and urged, "I had Karen prepare a guest room for you. Go rest!"
Joshua had indeed known for a long time that the children were Ella's.
He had once tried hard to convince himself to accept those two children.
But Ella was determined to divorce and leave with the kids.
Now that she had made Aiden so angry he died, how could he possibly forgive her easily?
Samuel seemed to understand Joshua's thoughts, smiled helplessly, and left with these words. "Remember to have Karen keep watch. Her fever hasn't broken yet. She could be in danger at any moment."
Joshua pretended not to care.
But after Samuel left, he still unconsciously entered the nanny's room and came to Ella's bedside.
Dorian probably couldn't bear to be separated from Ella and had fallen asleep lying by the bed.
Joshua looked at the mother and son, his heart full of mixed feelings.
Letting go was clearly the best choice, out of sight, out of mind.
But somehow, deep in Joshua's heart, whenever he faced Ella, there was a dull ache, as if something was pulling at him, not letting him give up.
If he wouldn't let them go, then he could only make Ella pay for what she had done.
"I'm sorry, I was wrong."
On the bed, Ella murmured in her daze.
Her small face was flushed with fever, her expression pained, her lips cracked and dry.
Joshua stared at her, his heart tugging.
But he remained unmoved.
What good was sorry? Aiden wasn't coming back.
And Ella had successfully let everyone know that he, Joshua, had married a woman who had children with another man.
He was now everyone's joke.
He really couldn't keep staring at her.
Otherwise he would start convincing himself again that because he was older, he should be more understanding with her.
After all, Ella was only 24, very young, and didn't understand anything.
Joshua suppressed the stirring in his heart and turned to leave the room.
He ran into Karen, and instructed her, "Keep watch. If anything happens, go upstairs and get Dr. Harris."
Karen nodded.
She clearly felt that Joshua cared about Ella.
Yet he had to act cold.
She couldn't understand these young people. She hurried to bring medicine to Ella.
Ella woke up on the morning of the third day.
When she opened her eyes, Dorian was lying by the bed.
She raised her hand to touch Dorian's round little face, calling out softly, "Dorian."
Dorian looked up, and seeing that Ella had woken up, moved closer to her excitedly, "Mom, you're finally awake. Do you know? This time you were unconscious for two days again."
When Ella fainted and he examined her, feeling that Ella barely had any breath, he was so scared he cried.
He thought Ella would leave him again like last time.
So this time, he stayed by Ella's side constantly for two days.
Ella struggled to sit up and asked Dorian, "Did you see Aurora?"
She had a very long dream.
In the dream, there was Aiden, there was Aurora, and even the children's father.
But she couldn't see that man's face clearly no matter what.
She felt he was right beside her, but when Ella reached out to grab him, she couldn't catch him.
"No."
Dorian pouted, saying angrily, "I knew that bad guy was lying to us. He didn't help us find Aurora at all, otherwise he would have brought Aurora back already."
Ella didn't believe it.
If Joshua hadn't found Aurora, how could he threaten her with Aurora?
She threw off the covers and dragged her weak body out of bed.
"Mom, you haven't recovered yet. You need to lie in bed and rest properly."
Dorian quickly tried to stop her.
Ella refused. Even though she barely had the strength to speak, she still insisted, "I'll go ask him myself. If he hasn't helped us find Aurora, then we'll leave as soon as possible and not disturb him and others."
Dorian had no choice but to help Ella out of the room.
He was too small to support Ella properly, so he could only raise his hands to hold up her legs.
As soon as the mother and son came out of the nanny's room, they saw Joshua and Scarlett sitting in the dining room not far away.
The two were having a meal.
They looked well-dressed and attractive, a perfect match.
Ella suppressed the bitterness in her heart, stumbled to their side, and used all her strength to speak, "Joshua, can you let me see Aurora?"
