Chapter 22: Secret Paintings
***Vanessa’s POV***
The only sound in the otherwise silent studio was the soft tap of my pencil against the paper. It was already the end of the day, and Ivanov Designs was almost empty at this hour. However, I always found myself more focused when silence surrounded me. I had just finished drawing a new piece of jewelry when I saw Sergie walk through the doorway of my studio.
His presence was magnetic, as always. Dressed in a sleek, dark suit with his hair slightly tousled, he exuded an effortless charm that made my pulse quicken. I tried to immerse myself in the text before me, yet our kiss lingered in my mind—a jolt of electricity at the edge of dry wood, a frozen moment from the past.
“Vanessa,” he said, his booming voice shattering the stream of my thoughts.
I glanced up, trying to appear calm. “Yes?”
“Would you like to see my personal art collection this evening?” he asked, stepping further into the room. “I think it might inspire you.”
Surprised, I blinked. “Your private collection?”
“Yes.” His lips curved into a faint smile. “You’ve been working tirelessly, and I thought it might be a good change of pace. Besides, you mentioned once how much you enjoy experiencing art outside your own creations.”
It was tempting, especially since I had nothing on my agenda for the evening. I put my pen aside and suppressed the memory of our last kiss. “I’d like that.”
A flicker of satisfaction passed through his eyes. “Good. Let me know when you’re ready.” Having picked up my bag, I went with Sergie to his car. The movement of the vehicle was passive, but tension filled the space between us. Neither of us mentioned the kiss, yet I caught myself sneaking glances at his profile—the sharp jawline and the determined set of his mouth. My mind betrayed me, replaying the feeling of his lips against mine.
As we arrived, the elevator whisked us up to his penthouse, and the doors peeled open to reveal an enormous, luxurious room. Floor-to-ceiling windows framed the city lights, and the contemporary design was enhanced by a touch of warmth and hospitality.
But what truly captivated me was the art.
Paintings and sculptures filled the space, each piece meticulously placed. Abstract paintings mingled with classic portraits, bringing life and emotion to the walls.
“This is… incredible,” I breathed as I stepped into the room.
“I’m pleased you think so,” Sergie said quietly. He stepped closer and stood next to me, hiding his hands in his trouser pockets. “These pieces are part of my personal collection. Some I acquired; others were commissioned.”
I wandered further in, marveling at the sheer beauty of it all. The pieces weren’t just decorations; they felt like fragments of a story—glimpses into a person’s soul.
And then I saw it.
A visually striking piece titled Falling Forward hung on the wall in an ideal spot. My breath caught in my throat as I turned to Sergie in disbelief.
“You… you bought it?”
Sergie's fervor was palpable as his gaze remained fixed on mine. “Yes.”
“But why didn’t you tell me?”
“I didn’t want to influence your work or make you feel… indebted,” he said carefully. “I purchased it because it spoke to me—the unreflected emotion, the exposure—it was something I had never experienced before.”
His words left me momentarily speechless. Turning back to the painting, my heart pounded as I realized that its emotional depth had affected him profoundly.
“Thank you,” I said quietly.
He stepped closer, his presence almost tangible. “There’s nothing to thank me for. You created something extraordinary.”
I turned to face him; the proximity between us stole the air from my lungs. His gaze held mine—intense and unyielding—and I found myself drawn to him in a way I couldn’t deny.
My eyes flickered to his lips, and heat rose to my cheeks as I remembered our last kiss. Was he thinking about it too?
“You’re staring,” Sergie said, his voice low and teasing.
My cheeks burned. “I’m not—”
But before I could finish, his hand brushed against my cheek, silencing me. The sensation was ethereal; it coursed through me.
“It’s hard to make any sense of it, Vanessa,” he murmured, his thumb grazing my jawline.
My breath hitched. “Sergie…”
His hand descended along the back of my neck, fingers gripping my hair gently. He hovered above me, giving me a chance to move away—but I didn’t want to.
When his lips met mine, the world fell away. It started as a slow kiss—a tentative courtship—but soon turned into something deep and intense. His other hand settled on my waist, tightening as I melted against him.
I lost myself in sensation—the taste of him and how he held me as if I were the most precious thing in existence. My fingers found their way to his shoulders as I clung to him desperately.
The stronger our kiss became, the more intense each sensation felt as his hand slipped beneath my shirt and teased the bare skin under my ribcage. A gasp escaped my lips into his mouth.
“Vanessa,” he whispered, his voice husky with desire.
Hearing my name like that nearly undid me; my heart raced while sensations surged through me—feelings I hadn’t experienced in years.
But then reality crashed down around us.
I pulled back slightly, breathing heavily. “Sergie, we can’t…”
His forehead rested against mine; our breaths were uneven. “I know.”
There we were—still close—our bodies frozen in place with tension thickening the air around us. I wanted nothing more than to give in, but fear held me back.
“I should go,” I said softly.
Sergie grasped my hand tightly for a moment before letting go. “I’ll drive you.” The journey home to Emma's was uneventful; however, the gap between us burned with tension. I couldn’t shake off thoughts of our kiss or how perfect Sergie seemed in that moment—and how utterly irresistible he had become to me.
When we arrived at Emma's place, he ushered me to the door; our hands brushed together as we bid each other farewell.
I couldn’t escape it—I was completely in love with Sergie Ivanov; it was irresistible.
