Chapter 57 THE HACKER IDENTITY

Chapter 57 THE HACKER IDENTITY

Adeline's POV

I didn't sleep. I kept tossing and turning all night.
The name kept echoing in my head. Midnight Cerulean.

My name, my identity, my signature, was being used to destroy the Gravano family.

Someone had stolen it. Studied my methods well enough to replicate them and left my calling card at the scene of nine murders and twenty-six million in losses.

And now the entire Gravano organization was hunting for Midnight Cerulean.

Hunting for me.

At 3 AM, I carefully slid out of bed. Kayden stirred but didn't wake. I grabbed my phone and went to my private office, the one room in the mansion that was completely mine.

I locked the door, pulled up my laptop, and dove into the code.

If someone was impersonating me, they had to have made mistakes. Nobody could replicate my work perfectly. There would be tells. Patterns that didn't quite match.

I pulled apart the attack code line by line, analyzing every function, every choice.

And there it was, buried deep in a nested loop, I found it.

An inefficiency. The kind of amateur error I would never make. The structure was right, the syntax was correct, but the execution was sloppy.

Whoever did this had studied my work carefully. But they weren't me.

I traced the error pattern, cross-referencing it with known hacker signatures in underground databases I had access to. Similar patterns appeared in attacks from three years ago in Eastern European cybercriminal groups. Professional, expensive, but not elite level.

So someone had hired hackers to impersonate my signature.

But why frame me specifically? And how did they even know Midnight Cerulean was connected to me?

A knock on my office door made me jump.

"Adeline?" Kayden's voice. "You okay?"

I quickly minimized the screens. "Yeah. I just couldn't sleep. I've been thinking about everything."

"Can I come in?"

"Of course."

He entered, looking tired and concerned. His hair was down, loose around his shoulders. "It's three in the morning."

"I know. I'm sorry. Did I wake you?"

"I woke up and you weren't there." He sat down next to me. "Talk to me. What's going on?"

"I'm worried. About Belle, about the attacks. About who could do something like this."

"We're going to find them. My father has everyone on it."

"The hacker, Midnight Cerulean. Your tech team said they're a ghost. How do you catch someone like that?"

"We find their mistake. Everyone makes mistakes eventually." His hand found mine.

"But right now, I need you to rest. You look exhausted."

"I can't. Every time I close my eyes, I see those body bags."

"I know. But running yourself into the ground won't bring them back." He pulled me close. "Come back to bed. Please."

I let him lead me back to our bedroom, his arm around my waist. We lay down together, and I tried to slow my racing heart.

But my mind wouldn't stop.

Someone was framing me. And eventually, the investigation would lead to my door.

Morning came too soon. Kayden was up early, already on the phone with Marco about the investigation.

I made coffee with shaking hands, tried to act normal.

My phone rang. It was a call from Belle.

"Hey," I answered, forcing brightness into my voice.

"Addy. Are you okay? Last night was so scary."

"I'm fine. Are you okay?"

"Grey's been amazing. He stayed up with me all night, just talking, making sure I felt safe." She paused.

"He's been asking about what happened. About the attacks. He's really concerned about the family."

Something about that bothered me. "What kind of questions?"

"Just normal questions. Like how bad was it, does Kayden know who did it. He wants to help if he can."

"Belle, maybe don't tell Grey too much about family business right now. Things are complicated."

"I'm not telling him secrets. But Addy, he's going to be family in two weeks. He should know what's going on."

Two weeks. The rushed timeline still nagged at me.

"Just be careful, okay?"

"You're doing it again. Being overprotective."

"I can't help it. I love you."

"I love you too. And Addy? I need your help this afternoon with wedding stuff. Can you come over around two?"

"Of course. I'll be there."

We hung up, and I stared at my coffee.

Grey asking questions about the investigation. About what Kayden knew.

Was he just concerned? Or was there something else?

By mid-morning, the mansion was buzzing with activity. Russio had called an emergency meeting of the family's inner circle.

I sat in the corner of the conference room, trying to be invisible while Kayden, Russio, Marco, and about a dozen other high-ranking members discussed the crisis.

"We've narrowed down the suspects," Marco said, pulling up a presentation.

"Fifteen people had access to all three shipment routes and schedules."

Photos appeared on the screen. Men and women I'd seen around the mansion. Some I'd met, some I hadn't.

"We're investigating each one thoroughly," Russio said.

"Financials, communications, travel records. If there's a traitor in this family, we'll find them."

"What about the hacker?" one of the men asked. "This Midnight Cerulean?"

"Our tech team is working on it," Kayden said. "But whoever they are, they're good. Really good."

"Too good," Marco added. "The kind of good that costs serious money. Someone paid premium rates for this level of hack."

"Which means we're looking at someone with resources," Russio said.

"Another family, maybe. Or someone inside trying to stage a coup."

My stomach churned. They were getting closer to the truth, even if they didn't realize it yet.

"I want updates every six hours," Russio ordered. "And I want that hacker found. I don't care what it costs. Hire outside experts if we need to, bring in consultants, whatever it takes."

The meeting continued for another hour, dissecting every detail of the attacks, analyzing patterns, and building theories.

And through it all, I sat silent, knowing I could solve this in hours if I dared to reveal myself.

But revealing myself meant losing everything.

At two PM, I escaped to Belle's apartment, grateful for the distraction.

Belle opened the door looking happier than yesterday. "Addy! Thank god. I'm drowning in last-minute decisions."

Her apartment was covered in wedding planning chaos.

We spent two hours going through details…flowers, caterer, photographer. Belle was in her element, excitedly planning every aspect.

"Grey's been so helpful," she said, showing me photos he'd sent of the venue.

"He went by yesterday to check on the setup. Made sure everything was perfect."

"That's sweet of him."

"He really is perfect, Addy. I know you had your doubts, but I hope you see it now. How good he is for me."

I looked at my sister, radiant, happy, so full of hope for her future.

"I do see it," I said quietly.

And I meant it. Despite everything, Grey had made Belle genuinely happy.

Which made the nagging suspicion in my gut even more confusing.

I got back to the mansion around five PM to find controlled chaos.

Kayden was in his study with Marco and three people I didn't recognize, tech specialists, I realized. They had laptops and equipment spread across every surface.

"What's going on?" I asked from the doorway.

Kayden looked up, his expression grim. "We brought in outside experts. The best in the field, to help track down Midnight Cerulean."

My heart stopped.

One of the specialists, a woman in her thirties with sharp eyes, looked at me. "You're Mrs. Gravano?"

"Yes."

"We'll need to scan all devices in the household. It's standard protocol. The hacker could have planted surveillance or backdoors anywhere."

"Of course," I said, trying to keep my voice steady. "Whatever you need."

"We'll start with the main systems, then move to individual devices and private spaces."

Private spaces.

My office.

Where I had my equipment. My encrypted systems. Everything that would prove I was Midnight Cerulean.

"How long will this take?" I asked.

"Few days. Maybe a week. Depends what we find."

A week. I had a week before they discovered everything.

That evening, Kayden and I had dinner alone in our room. He looked exhausted, the weight of the crisis visible in every line of his face.

"Talk to me," I said quietly. "How are you doing?"

"Nine men dead, Adeline. Nine. And I can't find who did it." He set down his fork.

"I keep thinking about their families. Their kids. What do I tell them? That we're trying? That's not good enough."

"You're doing everything you can."

"Is it enough though? What if Midnight Cerulean is better than us? What if we can't catch them?"

"You will. You always do."

He looked at me, really looked at me. "You have faith in me. Even when I don't have faith in myself."

"Always."

He reached across the table, took my hand. "I don't know what I'd do without you. You're my anchor. The one thing that keeps me sane in all this chaos."

Guilt twisted in my chest like a knife.

"Kayden—"

"I mean it. Whatever happens, whatever we face, I'm grateful I have you. That I don't have to do this alone."

"You'll never be alone. I promise."

The words felt like ash in my mouth. Because soon, he'd know the truth. And then I would be alone.

Late that night, after Kayden finally fell asleep, I lay awake staring at the ceiling.

The outside specialists were good….really good.

I watched them work today and seen their methods, their thoroughness.

At their current pace, they'd reach my office security protocols in about three days.

And once they breached those protocols, they'd find everything.

My equipment. My custom-built systems. The sophisticated setup that no casual computer user would have.

Proof that I was Midnight Cerulean.

I had three days.

Three days before my entire life came crashing down.

Three days to figure out who framed me and why.

Three days to decide whether to run or stay and face the consequences.

I turned to look at Kayden, sleeping peacefully beside me.

He trusted me completel, believed in me, loved me.

And in three days, he'd know I'd been lying to him from the beginning.

That the woman he married was
not just the assassin he knew, but also the legendary hacker his family was desperately hunting.

The hacker whose signature was used to kill nine of his men.

I closed my eyes, but sleep wouldn't come.

The clock was ticking.

And I had no idea how to stop it.
