Chapter 58 THE INVESTIGATION CLOSES IN

Chapter 58 THE INVESTIGATION CLOSES IN

Adeline's POV

Day one of the investigation started early.

I woke to find Kayden already gone, voices drifting up from downstairs. The tech specialists had arrived before dawn, eager to begin their systematic sweep of the mansion.

I got dressed slowly, deliberately, trying to calm my racing heart.

Act normal. Just act normal.

I went downstairs to find the main living areas transformed into a command center. Laptops, cables, scanning equipment everywhere. The three specialists were already at work, methodically checking every device, every connection point.

"Mrs. Gravano," the woman said when she saw me.

"Good morning. I'm Dr. Chen. We'll try to stay out of your way as much as possible."

"It's fine. Do what you need to do."

"We'll be scanning the main network infrastructure today. Tomorrow we'll move to individual offices and private spaces. We'll need access to your office as well."

My office. Where everything was hidden.

"Of course. Whenever you need it."

Kayden appeared with Marco, both looking exhausted. "Any progress?"

"Early days," Dr. Chen said.

"But we're finding traces of the intrusion everywhere. Whoever Midnight Cerulean is, they had complete access to your systems."

"How is that possible?" Marco demanded. "We have top-tier security."

"Midnight Cerulean isn't a normal hacker. They're legendary for a reason." Dr. Chen pulled up a screen showing code.

"See this? This level of sophistication, it's beautiful. Almost artistic."

I forced myself to stay impassive. That was my code she was admiring.

"Beautiful," Kayden said coldly. "Nine men are dead because of that 'beautiful' code."

"I'm sorry. You're right. I just meant from a technical standpoint, this person is extraordinary."

"Then they should be easier to find. Someone this skilled must have a reputation."

"You'd think so. But Midnight Cerulean has been operating for at least a decade with zero traces. No real name, no location, no connections. It's unprecedented."

Because I'd been careful. Obsessively careful.

"Keep looking," Kayden said. "Someone, somewhere, knows who they are."

By midday, the mansion felt like it was under siege.

Russio had called in the Council, the heads of all major Gravano operations. They gathered in the conference room, and Kayden asked me to sit in.

So I sat in the corner, trying to be invisible, while the Council discussed the crisis.

"Midnight Cerulean," one of the older men said. "I thought they were a myth."

"They're real," Dr. Chen said, presenting her findings. "And they're the best I've ever seen. The attack was flawless."

"Everyone makes mistakes," Russio said from the head of the table.

"Not Midnight Cerulean. At least, not that we've found yet."

"Then find something we haven't found."

The Council meeting devolved into arguments about security protocols and internal investigations.

"We need to check everyone," one woman said.

"Family members included. Anyone with computer skills is suspect."

"You think one of us is Midnight Cerulean?" Marco asked, incredulous.

"I think we don't rule anyone out. This was an inside job."

My stomach dropped.

"Fine," Russio said. "Check everyone. Search offices, scan devices, interview everyone. If Midnight Cerulean is in this house, I want them found."

His eyes swept the room, landing briefly on me.

That afternoon, I escaped to Belle's apartment, desperate for a break from the suffocating tension.

Belle answered the door in paint-splattered clothes, looking frazzled. "Oh thank god. I need you."

"What's wrong?"

"Everything. The florist mixed up my order. The caterer is asking questions I don't understand." She pulled me inside.

"I'm having a breakdown over centerpieces, Addy."

For the next two hours, we dealt with wedding logistics. It was almost normal.

"How are things at the mansion?" Belle asked.

"Tense. They're investigating the attacks. Brought in outside experts."

"Grey's been worried. He keeps asking if there's anything he can do to help." She looked at me. "Is it weird that he cares so much?"

"Why would that be weird?"

"I don't know. Sometimes I think... never mind."

"What?"

"Nothing. I'm just stressed." But her expression said otherwise.

"Belle. What were you going to say?"

She bit her lip. "Sometimes Grey seems really interested in the family business. He asks specific questions about operations, about security. And I keep telling him stuff because I trust him, but then I wonder if I should be more careful."

My instincts flared. "What kind of questions?"

"Like about the shipments. About how the family coordinates operations. About who has access to information." She shook her head. "I'm probably being paranoid."

"Belle, what exactly have you told him?"

"Nothing secret! Just general stuff. About how meetings work, who reports to who." She looked worried now. "Did I mess up?"

"No. Just... be a little more careful, okay?"

"Okay. But Addy, Grey is good. I know you still have doubts, but he loves me. He wouldn't hurt the family."

I wanted to believe that.

I got back to the mansion as the sun was setting. The specialists were still working.

Kayden found me in our room. "They're moving to individual offices tomorrow. Starting with family members."

"Makes sense."

"Russio's office first, then Marco's, then mine." He paused. "Then yours."

"When?"

"Tomorrow afternoon, probably."

Tomorrow afternoon. Less than 24 hours.

"Are you worried?" Kayden asked, studying my face.

"About what?"

"About them searching your office. You're very private about that space. I just wondered if there's something you don't want found."

My heart stopped. "Like what?"

"I don't know. You never let anyone in."

"Everyone has secrets, Kayden."

"That's not an answer."

We looked at each other for a long moment.

"My office is private because I need space that's just mine," I said carefully.

"Living in your family's world, I need somewhere that's just for me."

He seemed to accept this. "Okay. I just wanted to make sure you were prepared. They're going to go through everything."

"I understand."

He kissed my forehead. "I need to get back to work."

He left, and I sat on the bed, my mind racing.

Less than 24 hours.

That night, after Kayden finally fell asleep, I went to my office and started systematically wiping drives, clearing caches, destroying anything that could link me to Midnight Cerulean.

It took hours. Each file deleted felt like cutting away a piece of myself.

But it wasn't enough. The equipment itself was damning. The custom-built systems, the military-grade encryption hardware, the sophisticated setup.

I couldn't explain any of it away.

By 4 AM, I'd done everything I could. But I knew it wouldn't be enough.

The next morning, Dr. Chen and her team started with Russio's office, and found nothing.

Then Marco's office, they found nothing.

Then Kayden's office at 3 PM, they found nothing.

At 4:15 PM, Dr. Chen approached me. "Mrs. Gravano? We're ready for your office now."

My heart stopped.

"Of course," I said, standing on shaking legs.

We walked to my office together. Dr. Chen, her two colleagues, Kayden, Marco, and surprisingly, Russio.

I unlocked my office door and let them in, watched as they began their scan.

One of the specialists, Derek, went to the bookshelf and started removing books.

"Mrs. Gravano," he said slowly. "There's something behind here."

"Behind the books?"

"Behind the bookshelf." He pressed something. The entire shelf swung open.

Revealing the hidden alcove behind it.

Where all my equipment was.

Military-grade computers, encryption hardware, multiple monitors, sophisticated networking equipment.

A professional hacker's setup.

The room went silent.

Everyone stared at the equipment, then at me.

Kayden's face was pale. "Adeline. What is this?"

Dr. Chen stepped forward, examining the setup with wide eyes.

"This is professional grade. Military spec. Some of this equipment I've only seen used by elite cybersecurity firms and..." She trailed off.

"And what?" Russio demanded.

"And hackers. High-level hackers."

Marco looked at me, confused. "Boss, I don't understand. What is all this?"

But Kayden understood. I could see it in his eyes, the realization dawning.

"You," he said quietly. "All this time. You're—"

"Midnight Cerulean," Russio finished, his voice
cold. "My son married Midnight Cerulean."

The room exploded into chaos. Questions, accusations, demands for answers.

But all I could see was Kayden's face.

The betrayal in his eyes, the trust shattering.

Everything is falling apart.
