Chapter 60: A New Threat

Aria’s gaze locked onto Kael’s.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then, she smiled.

Not the soft, teasing smile he knew.

Not the one that made his heart race.

This smile was something else.

Something darker.

Kael’s stomach twisted.

"Aria?" His voice was cautious.

Her eyes flashed.

And in that instant,

The Blood Moon pulsed one final time.

The battlefield was still.

The blood rain had stopped. The earth, once splitting apart, now smoldered in eerie silence. The wolves who had sided with Mara remained frozen, their eyes wide with disbelief.

Aria stood at the center of it all.

Glowing. Radiant.

Yet… wrong.

Kael took a slow step forward. His instincts screamed at him to be careful.

"Aria?" His voice was soft, careful. "It’s over. You’re safe now."

She tilted her head. Studying him.

A chill ran down Kael’s spine.

Something was different.

Her eyes, once a brilliant silver, held a flicker of something else.

Not darkness. Not rage.

Power.

An unfathomable, all-consuming power that felt… ancient.

Aria lifted her hands, flexing her fingers as if testing their strength. The air around her hummed with raw energy, bending to her will.

Kael’s breath hitched. She wasn’t struggling anymore.

She wasn’t fighting to control it.

She had embraced it.

The remaining wolves slowly rose to their feet. Their gazes flickered between Kael and Aria, uncertainty weighing in the air.

Hunter, the Beta who had challenged Kael, took a hesitant step forward. "So… is she back? Or…" He trailed off, unwilling to finish the thought.

A low growl rippled through the pack. They sensed it too.

Kael turned to Aria, watching her closely.

She looked like herself. But something inside her had shifted.

Permanently.

***

A sudden gust of wind kicked up dust, swirling around the remains of Mara’s ashes.

Kael’s gaze flickered down. He expected nothing.

But then

A voice whispered through the air.

"You think you’ve won?"

Kael’s blood ran cold.

The voice was faint, almost like an echo. But it was Mara.

"You were always too blind to see the truth, Alpha."

The air grew heavy, a final trace of Mara’s magic settling into the earth.

"The Lunari was never meant to destroy your kind."

Kael’s heartbeat thundered. "Then what was it meant for?"

Silence.

Then, a soft, cruel laugh.

"You’ll see soon enough."

The last remnants of Mara’s presence faded, but her words hung over them like a curse.

Kael turned back to Aria—and froze.

She was watching him.

Smiling.

Not with malice. Not with cruelty.

But with knowledge.

Like she already knew exactly what Mara had meant.

Kael couldn’t breathe.

The battlefield was silent—too silent. The pack stood motionless, watching, waiting.

Aria’s fingers curled around his hand. Her grip was soft, steady.

But Kael felt it.

Something beneath her skin.

A pulse of raw energy, something ancient and terrifying, thrummed just beneath her touch. It wasn’t just Aria standing before him. It was something more.

Something… other.

She smiled. "Kael, why do you look afraid?”

Kael’s throat was dry. Did he trust her?

The pack behind him shifted uneasily. They felt it too.

Hunter, his former Beta, let out a harsh breath. "This is wrong."

Kael turned sharply. "What?"

Hunter’s eyes darkened. "You know what." He took a step forward, his muscles tense. "She isn’t the same. Whatever happened… it changed her."

Kael wanted to deny it. Wanted to believe that Aria had returned to him.

But he couldn’t ignore the way the air bent around her, like reality itself feared her presence.

Like the world knew something he didn’t.

Aria tilted her head, her silver eyes glowing faintly. "I feel… awake."

Kael’s stomach clenched.

Aria lifted a hand. The air shifted.

The ground beneath them groaned. The trees withered.

And then

Crack.

The sky split open.

Dark tendrils of mist curled from the wound in the heavens, writhing like living shadows.

The pack staggered back. Someone gasped.

Aria laughed.

It was soft. Breathless.

Awe-filled.

"Did I do that?" she whispered, eyes wide with wonder.

Kael’s pulse thundered.

She didn’t know.

She didn’t even realize what she had just done.

And that was the scariest part of all.

A harsh wind swept through the battlefield, carrying a familiar, disembodied voice.

Mara’s.

"The Lunari was never meant to destroy your kind."

Kael’s breath hitched.

"It was meant to consume it."

Aria’s body tensed. Her fingers dug into Kael’s skin, her breath hitching.

She heard it too.

She felt it.

The truth settling into her bones.

A whisper from the very force now living within her.

Kael’s heart pounded. He opened his mouth—to speak, to stop this,

But then Aria jerked away.

Her body arched, trembling. A strangled gasp tore from her lips.

And when she lifted her gaze, Kael saw it.

The silver in her eyes was gone.

Replaced by something darker.

Something ancient.

A monstrous, ear-splitting roar tore through the air.

And Kael knew

This wasn’t Aria anymore.

This was the Lunari.

And it was awake.

Kael’s pack scattered.

The sky continued to crack.

And Aria slowly turned to face him.

A wicked, knowing smile stretched across her lips.

"Run, Alpha."

Kael’s heart stopped.

Aria tilted her head. "Because when I find you…"

A pause.

A breath.

And then, in a voice not her own

"You will bow.”

***

Kael stared at Aria’s monstrous Lunari form, horror gripping his chest. The sky bled red, and the ground cracked beneath his feet. A force unlike anything he had ever felt pulsed in the air, raw and overwhelming.

He turned to his remaining wolves—those still loyal—and barked the only order that mattered now.

“Retreat.”
