Chapter 295 - Interrupted Silences

The silence between Lyra and Ryan was precious. He held her in his arms, his breath still uneven after the tension built up over the past few days. The shadows within him receded, if only for a moment, in the warmth and peace that only Lyra's touch could provide.

She rested her head on his chest, listening to the rapid beat of Ryan's heart. It was a reminder that he was still human, still the boy who once looked at her as if she were the rarest light in the universe. Behind the prince, the heir, the warrior threatened by darkness, there was the man she loved more than she could explain.

“I’m so sorry, Lyra... for everything,” Ryan murmured, his lips brushing against her hair.

She closed her eyes, swallowing hard. There was so much pain there. So many questions. But this was not the time to open wounds. She simply held him tighter, as if she could keep him whole between her arms.

But the moment was abruptly broken.

The door to the room swung open with a sharp thud.

They instinctively pulled away from each other.

In the doorway stood Alara, watching them with a serious expression, her eyes heavy with emotions she struggled to control. The princess’s silver dress seemed like armor against chaos, but nothing about her exuded serenity.

“I apologize for the interruption.” Her voice was cold as the surface of a dead star. “But we need to talk.”

Ryan frowned. “Not now, Alara. This isn’t the moment.”

“It’s precisely because this isn’t the moment that I came,” she retorted, stepping into the room without asking for permission. “Things are spiraling out of control. Xenorth is plotting with the advisors, and Sérgio just sent another message to the imperial council. You two can no longer ignore what’s happening.”

Lyra stood up completely, the tension returning to her body. “We’re not ignoring anything. But… there are limits to what we can process at once.”

“Then it’s time to push those limits.” Alara crossed her arms. “I saw Sérgio today. He appeared to me. Almost like a dream. But it was real. And… he knows I care about Ryan. He’s using that.”

Ryan sighed, tired, placing his hands over his face for a moment. Then he faced the two women. “This isn’t the time for veiled disputes or childish rivalries. Alara, I appreciate that you’re trying to warn us, but if you came here to throw accusations or poison against Lyra, please leave.”

Alara clenched her fists but took a deep breath. “I didn’t come to fight. I came to help. It’s just that you both have to understand: everything is breaking apart. The guards are divided, and there are rumors of deserters among those who once swore loyalty to the crown. Sérgio… he wants to destroy everything. And he’s almost succeeding.”

Lyra felt her stomach churn. “Do you think he will act soon?”

“Yes. And I don’t just think it. I know it. He’s manipulating minds, corrupting wills.” Alara hesitated for a moment. “Including Xenorth’s.”

Ryan stood up from where he had been sitting and began to pace back and forth. The shadow that accompanied him like a second skin seemed restless. “And what does he want, besides the empire?”

Alara looked at Lyra. “You.”

Lyra froze.

Ryan also stopped, as if the air had been sucked out of the room.

“He doesn’t just want the throne,” Alara continued, her voice lower. “He wants you, Lyra. He wants you by his side. And for that… he will destroy everything in his path.”

“No,” Ryan murmured, his eyes darkening. “He won’t touch you. I won’t let him.”

“Ryan—” Lyra began, but he was already being consumed by anger, the darkness in his eyes beginning to glow with threatening hues.

“I will end him, Lyra. I will destroy every trace of this thing he calls power. And if Xenorth is with him… he will be the first to fall.”

Alara touched Ryan’s arm, trying to get his attention. “You can’t face this alone. You’re getting weaker every day. The shadows are consuming you, and I know you feel it.”

“And what do you suggest I do?” he snapped back, harshly. “Sit back while he threatens the woman I love?”

Lyra intervened, stepping closer. “Ryan… maybe there’s another way. We need strategy, not just strength. If we let rage guide us, he wins.”

The silence that formed between them was dense.

Ryan looked away for a moment. When he turned back to face her, he seemed calmer. “Do you think we can defeat him… without sacrificing everything?”

She nodded. “Yes. But we’ll need all the allies we can get. Including… her.” She looked at Alara.

The princess seemed surprised. “You trust me?”

Lyra took a deep breath. “I don’t know yet. But I trust what’s at stake. And this… is bigger than any resentment.”

For a moment, Alara’s eyes sparkled with something resembling gratitude. “Then… let’s unite.”

Ryan watched them, still with a tense expression. But there was a glimmer of hope there.

“Alright,” he said. “So what do we do now?”

Lyra looked out the window. The sky over Valthorya seemed darker that night, as if reflecting the impending chaos.

“Now…” she said, turning to face them, “we prepare. Because when Sérgio attacks, there will be no room for errors.”

Silence settled in for a brief moment, heavy and dense. Alara’s presence seemed to have drained the warmth from the room, replacing it with an uncomfortable tension. Ryan took a step back, as if distancing himself from Lyra would be enough to hide the intensity of his feelings. Lyra, in turn, straightened herself, trying to mask the impact of the emotional outburst they had just shared.

“I apologize for interrupting,” Alara said, her voice firm, but her eyes betrayed a whirlwind of emotions. “But we have a bigger problem than your feelings.”

Ryan frowned. “What are you talking about?”

Alara advanced with the natural elegance of her lineage, but her steps betrayed urgency. She extended a holographic sphere. The image that emerged in the air was clear: Sérgio. Again him. This time, the hologram showed him in one of his manipulative speeches, spreading words of fear, doubt, and dominance. Beside him, a crowd of shadowy soldiers.

“This recording was intercepted by our spies in the external systems. He wants Lyra. He’s willing to take all of Valthorya for her,” Alara declared coldly.

Ryan clenched his fists. The shadows on his skin pulsed as if they were responding to the threat. His eyes briefly glimmered, almost red.

“He won’t touch her. I swear,” he said, his voice hoarse, almost beastly.

Lyra touched Ryan’s arm, trying to calm him. “It’s not just about me, Ryan. He’s gearing up. He’s using our divisions to grow. And you…” she hesitated but continued, “you’re unstable.”

Alara nodded. “The shadows are controlling you more than you admit.”

Ryan looked at both of them, visibly hurt by the accusations. “I’m fine. I can control this!”

“Can you?” Alara questioned, staring him down. “Because from the outside, it looks like you’re one step away from becoming what we hate the most.”

Silence fell again, but this time it was Lyra who broke it, her voice softer yet firm:

“I love you, Ryan. But I won’t pretend I’m not scared. Scared of losing you. Scared that you will lose yourself in something you don’t even understand anymore.”

Ryan turned away, distancing himself from their gaze. His breathing was heavy. His chest heaved like that of a trapped beast.

“I want to fight. To protect you. But everything is falling apart and I don’t know what’s right or wrong anymore…”

Lyra stepped closer and held his hand. “Then fight, but fight with clarity. Don’t let Sérgio win by destroying you from within.”

Alara sighed. “We don’t have time to hesitate. He has already placed spies among our advisors. There are rumors of desertions and secret deals. Valthorya is on the brink of civil war.”

“And all because of me…” Lyra murmured.

“No.” Alara interrupted her. “Because of what you represent. Light, hope. And that’s why he wants to take you. To extinguish all of that.”

Ryan turned again, looking at Lyra as if he were seeing the truth for the first time. “Maybe… maybe we should use that against him. If he wants you, then let’s make him think he has you.”

“What?” Alara and Lyra shouted in unison.

“A plan of infiltration. A trap. We can lure him out, make him leave his fortress,” Ryan explained, his eyes burning with a new spark of strategy.

Alara looked at him, surprised. “Are you suggesting that Lyra surrender?”

“Not for real. I would never allow that. But we can create a narrative, a bait convincing enough to lower his guard.”

Lyra looked at him, torn. “That’s dangerous.”

“Everything is dangerous right now,” Ryan replied. “But if we want to win, we have to be bold. He’s using every possible resource. It’s time we do the same.”

Alara crossed her arms. “We’ll have to think this through carefully. And plan with precision. Any mistake and Lyra will be in his hands.”

Ryan nodded. “Then let’s plan. Now. Together.”

The three figures stood there, side by side. Rivals turned allies, lovers turned soldiers of a faltering empire. Nothing was certain anymore except the fact that they were together. And that, for now, would be enough to begin.
