Chapter 173

Chapter 173
Author’s POV

The night was thick with tension as Ethan, Lila, and Langston approached the abandoned skyscraper that housed the syndicate’s power players. The building loomed like a dark monument, its windows glowing faintly against the coal black sky. The upper section of the syndicate's operation, including politicians, corporate magnates, and corrupt officials, gathered inside.

"This is the nerve centre," Langston said, his voice low. “They operate from the shadows here. You take this down, and the entire network collapses.”

Ethan's jaw tightened, a grim smile tugging at his lips. He glanced at Lila, who nodded with quiet determination. Her gaze was steady, but he caught the flicker of tension in her eyes.

“How many guards are we expecting?” Ethan asked.

Langston sighed. "If you're not careful, this could easily turn into a suicide mission."

“We’ve never been careful,” Lila said, checking her weapon.

Grayson’s voice came through their earpieces. “I have accessed their security feed. They carry heavy weapons, and biometric access secures the elevator.

“Perfect,” Ethan whispered. “Langston, you’re up.”

Langston held up a stolen security badge and biometric override tool. “This gets us through the first two layers. After that, it’s on you.”

“Let’s move,” Ethan said, signaling the team forward.

The lobby was eerily quiet as they entered, the faint hum of fluorescent lights the only sound. Langston swiped the badge, and the elevator doors slid open with a soft ding.

"We've cleared the first challenge," he said, stepping inside.

As the elevator ascended, the tension increased. Ethan’s mind raced with different possibilities. They were walking into a lion’s den with no guarantee of survival.

“Remember,” he said, glancing at Lila. “We stick together. No playing heroics.”

She raised a brow. “And who's specialty is that?”

The elevator stopped abruptly, the doors sliding open to reveal two guards stationed outside. They didn’t have time to react. Ethan moved swiftly, taking one down with a single shot, while Lila sent the other sinking with a sharp blow to the face.

“Keep it quiet,” Ethan murmured as they dragged the bodies into a storage closet.

The upper floors were a maze of glass offices and conference rooms. Grayson’s voice guided them through the passages.

“Turn left. Two guards ahead, patrolling.”

Langston paused, signaling them to hold back as he distracted the guards with a noise down the hall. When they moved to investigate, Ethan and Lila struck, taking them down silently.

They made their way further into the building until they came to a locked door bearing a syndicate insignia.

“This is it,” Langston said.

Lila handed him the override tool. “Make it quick.”

Langston worked quickly, his fingers skimming over the device. “This will bypass the secondary security protocols, but once we’re in, they will know.”

Ethan nodded. “Then we hit them hard and fast.”

The door clicked open, revealing a high-tech boardroom. Inside, six men and women sat at a sleek black table, their expressions ranging from shock to fury.

One of them, a middle-aged man in an expensive suit, stood. “You have no idea what you’re doing.”

“Why don't you do us the honor to explain” Ethan replied mockingly, raising his weapon. “We know your games and it ends today.”

Chaos erupted. One of the officials tried to reach for a his hidden weapon, but Ethan fired, hitting him in the arm. Langston rushed to secure the doors as Lila advanced toward the table, her weapon aimed at the remaining members.

"Put your hands where we can see them!" She barked.

The officials hesitated, but a woman with sharp features smirked. “You think killing us will stop this? You’re naive. We’re not the syndicate; we’re just the messengers.”

“That’s a lie,” Ethan said, his voice sharp. “We’ve seen the files. You’ve been orchestrating this for years—trafficking, laundering, murder. It ends tonight.”

The woman leaned back in her chair. “You’re too late. The wheels are already in motion. Even if you kill us, the network will adapt.”

Lila stepped forward, her gaze fierce. “Not this time. We’ve burned your safe houses, exposed your accounts, and taken down your operatives. The world is watching now.”

The woman’s smirk faltered.

Suddenly, an explosion rocked the building, the force shaking the walls.

“What was that?” Lila shouted, bracing herself.

Langston checked his device. “They have activated a failsafe. The building is rigged to blow.”

Ethan cursed under his breath. “We need to move.”

But as they turned toward the exit, a team of heavily armed operatives burst in, bullets blazing.

“Get down!” Ethan yelled and dragged Lila behind an overturned table.

The room became a battlefield, gunfire erupting from all sides. Despite taking down several operatives with their return fire, Ethan and Lila found themselves outnumbered.

“Reyes, we need backup!” Ethan shouted into his comm.

“We are locked down ourselves!” Reyes replied.

Amidst the chaos, Lila spotted one of the officials trying to escape through a side door.

“I’ve got him!” she muttered, breaking out from her cover.

“Lila, wait!” Ethan yelled at her, but it was already too late.

She chased the man down a narrow hallway, her footsteps echoing as he rounded a corner. She fired, grazing his leg and bringing him down.

“Not so fast,” she said, pinning him against the wall.

But before she could secure him, a shot rang out, and pain exploded in her shoulder. She staggered, pressing a hand on the wound as the man tried to crawl away.

Ethan appeared moments later, his face wide in shock. He dispatched the man with a single blow, then turned to Lila.

“Are you okay?” he asked, his voice tight with concern. “Stay with me, okay? I'll get us out of here.”

She nodded. “It’s just a graze. We need to finish this.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened, helping her to her feet. “Hold onto me.”

Back in the boardroom, Langston was frantically trying to disarm the failsafe as the remaining officials cowered.

“This is more complex than I thought,” he muttered, letting out a frustrating grunt.

“Work faster,” Ethan snapped as he and Lila returned.

Suddenly, one of the officials lunged at Langston, trying to grab the device. Ethan reacted instantly, tackling the man to the ground.

“Stay down,” he growled, pressing his weapon to the man’s head.

Langston finally managed to disable the failsafe, the red lights on the panel fading to black.

“It’s done,” he said, exhaling sharply.

Ethan turned to the officials. “You’re coming with us. Your days of power and corruption are over.”

As they exited the building, the sound of approaching sirens filled the air. Grayson and Reyes arrived, looking battered but alive, to secure the prisoners.

“You did it,” Reyes said, his face lit with joy, glancing at the captured officials.

“It’s not over yet,” Ethan replied, his gaze shifting to Lila. “One last shot and this will finally be over.”

As they loaded the officials into waiting vehicles, a message pinged on Ethan’s phone.

It was a single sentence: “You’ve only just begun to unravel the truth.”

The cryptic message sent a chill down his spine. This wasn’t the end yet. But they're half way to unlocking a deeper conspiracy.

And the real enemy was still in the shadows, waiting to strike.
