Chapter 168
Chapter 168
Author's POV
The small safe house buzzed with tension. Grayson’s fingers moved like lightning over his keyboard as Ethan stood behind him, his arms crossed and his face stiffened. Lila paced in the background, the weight of their precarious situation etched on her face. The data they had stolen from the syndicate was a collection of damning information, but every moment they stayed in one place felt like an invitation for the enemy to strike.
“They have gone completely dark,” Grayson murmured, his frustration mounting. “I can’t pinpoint their next move. They’ve shut down every known account, every asset.”
Ethan’s expression hardened. “They’re regrouping. They know we’re closing in, and they’ll get desperate.”
Lila stopped pacing, turning to face them. “Their desperation will push them to make mistake and that will be our advantage.”
Grayson glanced at her and nodded. “True, but they’ve also got resources. We might not see the next hit coming.”
As if on cue, the lights flickered, and a strange hum filled the room. Everyone froze, the air thick with tension.
“What the hell was that?” Ethan inquired in a low, sharp voice.
Grayson’s hands flew to his keyboard. “I don’t know. It’s not the grid; they are coming at us directly.”
The hum grew louder, and suddenly the computer screens went black, followed by a deafening silence. Then, a low, mechanical voice filled the room from an unseen speaker.
“Ethan Cross,” the voice said, cold and distorted. “You must think you're clever. But you’ve only scratched the surface of what we control.”
Ethan’s fists clenched, his eyes scanning the room for any hidden cameras or listening devices. “Who are you?” he demanded, his tone brewing with fury.
The voice laughed, a sound that sent chills down everyone’s spine. “Just a messenger. But you’ll learn soon enough what it means to challenge the syndicate.”
Before anyone could respond, the floor beneath them shook violently, and an explosion tore through the building across the street. The blast sent shockwaves through the safe house, shattering windows and knocking everyone off their feet.
“Move!” Ethan barked, pulling Lila up as debris rained down around them.
Grayson grabbed his laptop, and the trio made their way for the door just as another explosion rocked the building. Smoke and fire filled the air, and the acrid smell burned their throats as they stumbled onto the street.
“They are trying to flush us out!” Lila said, coughing as she covered her mouth with her sleeve.
Ethan scanned the area, his mind whiring “We need a vehicle.”
Grayson pointed down the block. “There’s a parking garage. If we’re lucky, we’ll find something we can use.
The parking garage was eerily quiet, the overhead lights flickering as the group moved quickly between rows of cars. Every shadow appeared to stretch and shift, creating a sense of an impending danger.
Ethan spotted an older Toyota car with the keys still in the ignition. “This will do,” he said, sliding into the driver’s seat.
Lila climbed into the passenger seat while Grayson hopped in the back, his laptop already open. “I’m checking for trackers or remote access points,” Grayson said, his voice tight with urgency.
As Ethan started the engine, the sound of tires screeching echoed through the garage. He glanced in the rearview mirror and saw three black SUVs speeding toward them, their headlights cutting through the darkness like blades.
“Use your seat belt,” Ethan growled, slamming the gear into reverse.
The chase was instant chaos. The black SUVs moved like predators, their drivers determined to force Ethan off the road. He weaved through the tight corners of the garage, narrowly avoiding collisions as Lila clung to the door handle.
“They are trying to box us in!” Grayson shouted, gripping the seat for balance.
Ethan muttered, "not if I can help it," while vigorously spinning the wheel.
He aimed for the exit ramp, the SUV’s tires squealing as he pushed the vehicle to its limits. One of the pursuing cars cut sharply, sideswiping them and sending a jolt through the cabin.
“Hang on!” Ethan yelled as he slammed on the brakes, allowing the attacking car to pass them easily. He floored the gas again, using the opening second to surge ahead.
They burst out of the garage and onto the main road, but the black SUVs were relentless, their engines roaring as they gave chase.
Grayson worked frantically in the backseat. “I’m hacking into traffic cams to reroute us. Just keep them off us for a few more minutes!”
Lila leaned out of the window, her weapon drawn. She fired a series of shots at the nearest SUV, shattering its windscreen and forcing it to swerve.
“Nice shot,” Ethan said, his focus steadied on the road ahead.
“It’s not enough,” Lila replied, her tone grim.
The chase led them into an industrial area, where warehouses and shipping containers offered both cover and danger. Ethan manoeuvred through the narrow lanes, using the environment to keep their pursuers at bay.
Grayson’s voice cut through the chaos. “I’ve got an idea. Head for the docks!”
Ethan didn’t question him, steering the car toward the waterfront. The black SUVs were still on their tail, their determination unyielding.
As they approached the docks, Grayson shouted, “Turn left at the next intersection!”
Ethan complied, the tires screeching as he took the turn. Ahead of them was a massive cargo crane, its towering frame silhouetted against the night sky.
“Keep going!” Grayson urged. “I’ve accessed the crane controls. Just get close enough!”
Ethan floored the gas, the car barreling toward the crane. Grayson typed furiously, and suddenly the crane’s massive arm swung down, its hook catching one of the pursuing SUVs and flipping it like a toy.
The remaining vehicles skidded to a halt, their drivers hesitating as the crane loomed above them, its arm moving with deliberate precision.
“Go, go, go!” Grayson shouted, and Ethan didn’t hesitate, steering the car onto a nearby ferry ramp just as the boat was preparing to depart.
The ramp lifted behind them, cutting off any chance of the syndicate’s men following.
As the ferry pulled away from the dock, the three of them sat in silence, their breaths heavy with exhaustion and adrenaline.
“We bought ourselves time,” Ethan said, his voice low but resolute.
“But not much,” Lila replied, her eyes scanning the dark waters around them.
Grayson leaned back, his expression a mix of relief and determination. “That stunt with the crane gave us an opening. We need to use it.”
Ethan nodded, his jaw tightening. “We will. But this isn’t over yet. Not by a long shot.”
Lila glanced at him, her gaze steady. “Then let’s make sure the next move is ours.”
As the ferry disappeared into the night, the city’s lights fading behind them, none of them noticed the small drone hovering in the distance, its camera trained on their vehicle.
The syndicate was watching. And they weren’t done yet.
