Chapter 162
Chapter 162
Author's POV
The safe house buzzed with energy as Ethan and his team meticulously planned their next move. The near ambush had left them shaken but even more determined. Their small victories so far had given them a much-needed edge, but they knew they needed to strike harder and deeper into the syndicate’s operations.
Time was running out.
Grayson stood at the center of the room, a holographic map of the city projected from his laptop.
“This is where we hit next,” he announced, pointing to a sprawling skyscraper in the financial district.
Ethan folded his arms, narrowing his eyes at the image. “What’s in there?”
“It’s a shell corporation,” Grayson explained. “It serves as one of the largest money-laundering hubs for the syndicate. They funnel billions through this place annually. If we take it down, we cut their funding channel and expose the key players running the show.”
Reyes leaned against the wall, loading his weapon. “Sounds good. What’s the catch?”
Grayson smirked. “It’s heavily protected. Top-tier security. Armed patrols. Cameras everywhere. To top it all off, they have encrypted servers storing all their financial data.”
Ethan’s lips curled into a grim smile. “Sounds like a challenge.”
Lila stepped forward, her expression determined. “We’ve come this far. We can’t back down now. Let’s take the fight to them.”
Elene, still nursing her injuries, added, “If we can extract their financial records, we’ll have proof of their illegal activities which will be sufficient to dismantle their network and implicate the influential individuals who support them.
Ethan nodded, his mind already racing through the logistics. “Then let’s get to work.”
The team positioned itself outside the skyscraper by nightfall. The towering building loomed against the city skyline, its reflective glass facade shimmering under the lights. The air was thick with anticipation as each member took their positions.
Grayson’s voice crackled over the comms. “Security rotation is confirmed. We’ve got a two-minute window to breach the west entrance undetected. Ethan, Lila, you’re up.”
Ethan glanced at Lila, their eyes meeting in silent understanding. “Ready?”
“Always,” she replied, her voice steady.
They moved like shadows, slipping past the guards and disabling the electronic locks on the door. Inside, the sterile corridors hummed with the faint buzz of fluorescent lights.
“Cameras are down,” Grayson reported. “But I can only keep them looped for three minutes. Move fast.”
Ethan led the way, his weapon drawn, his senses heightened. They reached the central elevator bank and inserted a custom hacking device into the panel. The doors slid open, revealing a sleek elevator.
"We're heading upstairs," Lila murmured as they entered.
The 38th floor was eerily quiet, the air heavy with tension. Rows of glass-walled offices stretched out before them, their emptiness unnerving. But Ethan knew better than to trust appearances.
“Servers are at the far end of the floor,” Grayson directed. “But be careful. Heat signatures indicate armed guards nearby.”
Ethan and Lila advanced cautiously, their movements silent and synchronized. They spotted two guards patrolling near the server room.
“I’ve got the one on the left,” Ethan whispered.
“Right,” Lila replied.
In a swift, coordinated attack, they neutralized the guards without a sound. Ethan pushed open the door to the server room, revealing rows of blinking machines.
Grayson’s voice filled their earpieces. “Plug in the drive. I’ll handle the rest.”
Ethan connected the device, watching as lines of code flashed across the screen.
“Transfer in progress,” Grayson said. “This will take a few minutes. Hold your position.”
But the silence didn’t last long. The elevator dinged, and the sound of heavy boots echoed down the corridor.
Lila issued a warning, tightening her grip on her weapon.
“Stay calm,” Ethan said, positioning himself by the door. “We hold them off until Grayson finishes.”
The first group of guards burst into the hallway, their rifles aimed and ready. Ethan and Lila opened fire, their shots precise and hitting their targets. The confined space amplified every sound, the cacophony of gunfire and shouts filling the air.
“We are almost there,” Grayson cried over the comms.
A grenade, its pin already pulled, rolled into the room. Lila reacted instantly, kicking it back into the hallway before it could detonate. The explosion rocked the floor, sending a shockwave through the building.
“We don’t have time for this,” Lila said, reloading her weapon.
“We are making time,” Ethan replied, his voice calm despite the chaos.
Finally, Grayson’s voice broke through the noise. “Transfer complete. Get out now!”
Ethan seized the drive and gestured to Lila. “Let’s move!”
They sprinted back toward the elevator, dodging incoming fire. Ethan hit the button for the ground floor, and the doors closed just as another group of guards rounded the corner.
“That was close,” Lila said, her breath coming in short gasps.
“Too close,” Ethan agreed, slipping the drive into his pocket.
The team regrouped at a secondary location, the tension palpable as Grayson plugged the drive into his laptop.
“Did we get it?” Ethan inquired, his voice tinged with urgency.
Grayson’s fingers flew over the keyboard, his eyes scanning the data. “Oh yeah, we got it. Names, accounts, transactions—everything. This is the breakthrough we've been eagerly anticipating.”
Elene leaned forward, her expression a mix of relief and determination. “With this, we can expose the entire syndicate.”
Reyes smirked. “Looks like their empire is about to crumble.”
But Ethan wasn’t smiling. He knew the fight was far from over. “What’s the next step?”
Grayson’s face darkened. “We leak this to the right channels—trusted journalists, whistleblowers, and international agencies. But we need to be fast about it. The syndicate would be coming with full force.”
As the team celebrated their victory, Ethan couldn’t shake the feeling that something was still off. The syndicate had always been one step ahead and prepared for every attack.
“Grayson,” he said, his voice low. “Double-check the data. Make sure we’ve not missed anything.”
Grayson nodded, his fingers dancing over the keyboard again.
Minutes later, his face went pale. “Shit! There's a problem.”
“What is it?” Lila inquired, her voice tight with worry.
“They’ve set a failsafe,” Grayson explained. "If this data leaks, it triggers an automated response—a coordinated attack on multiple cities. They have turned their downfall into a weapon.”
The room fell silent as the weight of the revelation sank in.
“What do we do?” Elene asked, her voice trembling.
Ethan’s jaw tightened. “We stop them. No matter what it takes.”
