Coma

Coma
Scarlett’s Point of View

My eyes fluttered open. I tried to sit up, but a sharp pain cut through my chest. I rested my head back against the pillow, my eyes scanning my surroundings. I was welcomed with white walls with blue lines. I didn't need anyone to tell me that I was admitted to the hospital, but what had happened to me? How did I end up here?

My brain was blank. I could remember the time I set a trap for Scarlynn, but what happened after that? How did I end up here?

Questions swirled in my brain, but I couldn't seem to find answers at all. It's like my mind was blocked from remembering anything. I moved my attention to the entrance when the sound of footsteps echoed inside.

Warmth spread over me as my eyes landed on Asher. At least I knew one thing for sure: I wasn't dead. But what happened?

“Scarlett, you are awake?” Asher ran over to me, his tone dripping with joy. He cupped my face, placing kisses all over my face. But what had happened? Why was he behaving like this?

“Water,” I muttered, clearing my dried throat. Asher quickly poured water into the glass. He gently lifted my chin, bringing the glass to my lips. I gulped it all down, quenching my thirst.

“Are you feeling okay?” Asher’s brows wrinkled, his eyes tenderly on me.

“I'm fine,” I forced words out of my mouth. The sharp pain in my chest was too unbearable. “What has happened to me, and why can't I remember anything else? What happened that night?” I tried to force myself to remember, but nothing came back to mind at all. Everything was a blur.

“Scarlett, we'll talk about this later. You need to rest right now,” Asher’s voice was soft. He placed the glass on the nightstand.

“Asher, tell me what happened!” My jaws clenched. Could it be that my plan had failed? Did Scarlynn and her mother get away once again?

“Monica discovered your true identity that night, and she followed us to the event. She shot you, and you've been in a coma for the past few weeks,” a lump formed in my throat, causing me to swallow hard. How did I lose to them once again? My goal was to destroy them, but that evil witch outsmarted me once again.

“Don't you worry, I've killed her and put the blame on Scarlynn. She's rotting in jail as we speak right now,” Asher seemed to have sensed my emotions before he added, but his words sent a sharp pang in my heart.

I should be happy that my plan succeeded. It might have not gone the way I wanted, but Monica was dead, and her precious daughter was paying for it. So why did it feel like I was kind of disappointed? I wanted to ask her face to face why she hated me so much, why didn't she just kill me when she gave birth to me?

I had a lot of questions to ask her, but I guess it was all over right now.

“Scarlett, it's over now,” Asher gently held my hand in his. “Scarlynn and Monica are out of your life for good. You can finally breathe fresh air.” As much as I wanted to celebrate, the pain in my heart was too unbearable, worse than the pain of the wound in my chest.

A deep part of me wanted to believe that it was all over, but I couldn't. There was this feeling in my heart that told me it wasn't over until I packed my things and left this city. At least I could breathe fresh air, away from this place.

“I think it's time I also go away,” my stomach hardened as I forced words out of my mouth. Of course, I didn't want to leave him behind. I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him. But to be honest, I was tired. I didn't have any more strength to fight for the things I wanted, nor did I have the power to love someone when I didn't even love myself. I'd end up hurting him, and he didn't deserve any of it.

Asher's face contorted, a pained expression crossing his features. I hated to hurt him, but it was better I hurt him once than staying with him and causing him a lifetime of pain. “And how do you expect me to keep going without you?” His voice was laced with pain, barely above a whisper.

“You don't need me, Asher. You'd be happier without me. Please don't make it harder for me than it already is.” I blinked back the tears welling up in my eyes. It's too bad that we didn't even get a chance to spend some time together. I didn't even have one memory of us together. How I wish I could stay, but I knew better.

“Shut the fuck up, Scarlett. We both know I won't be happy without you,” his jaws clenched, his eyes shimmering with unshed tears. At that point, I couldn't stop my tears from welling out of my eyes, but I forced a smile.

“You will be happy, Asher.” I swallowed the lump forming in my throat. “You'd get married to a beautiful woman who'd give you the most beautiful family and fill your life with happiness. And I'm not that woman, Asher. We both know it.”

Asher’s eyes widened, yet his brows were furrowed. “So you want to leave me because you can't give me a family?” His voice was heavy with sorrow, his words slow and labored. He held my hand tightly in his. I couldn't utter a word, tears streaming down my cheeks.

“Scarlett, I do not want a baby machine maker, but I want to spend the rest of my life with you because you are my home. You are the light that lit up my dark world and the whispers of your voice in my ears that calm my soul. Without you, I can't imagine a life. I can't live without you. I don't care about children as long as I have you in my life.” I burst into sobs as Asher’s words sank in. As much as I loved him, I didn't want to be selfish. I can't do this to him. He doesn't deserve it.
