Let Go
Let Go
Scarlett’s point of view
The air stalled, trapped in my lungs. I tried hard to control my emotions as my eyes locked with Asher's.
“If going away from me makes you happy, then I'm willing to let you go. Your happiness is more important to me than anything in this world, even if it means I have to die every single day without you,” his voice cracked with emotions, his eyes simmering with unshed tears. I fought back the tears that threatened to burst out of my eyes.
This decision was best for us, no matter how much I wanted to be with him. I can't be selfish. He doesn't deserve a woman like me; he deserves something better than this.
I lifted my hand to his face, my fingers gently stroking his cheek. The realization hit me very hard. I've never touched him, not even once.
Asher’s eyes shut closed, tears now streaming down his face. I let out a chuckle, tears streaming down my face too. It would hurt him to watch me leave now, but he'd realize one day that this decision was the best for us.
“You entered my life like a storm. I had promised myself to hate you for the rest of my days, but I don’t know when the storm began to calm my chaotic world,” my voice was fragile, each word weighed agony, longing, and an unbreakable pain.
Asher held my both hands, placing a soft kiss, his tears trailing down my palm. A knot twisted in my stomach. “I love you,” Asher whispered, his tone barely above a whisper.
I love you more.
I swallowed, unable to voice these words out. I knew if I did, he'd never let me go ever.
For the past few weeks, he did his best to try and change my mind, and I almost gave in to my emotions. But I can't be selfish and deprive him of the joy of being a father. I knew there were many options out there like adopting and all, but why should he go through all that because of me?
At this point in my life, I hated myself, so how can I be able to love someone else? My soul was frayed, like a worn thread.
I had nothing to offer him except pain and suffering, and he didn't deserve that at all. He deserves better than this.
“Always be happy, Asher. You truly deserve it,” I exhaled deeply, wiping away tears from my eyes. My fingers wrapped around my suitcase handle before I started dragging it to the plane. The chill air slapped against my skin, a shiver running down my spine. More tears streamed down my face as I turned and started walking away, leaving him standing there. I could feel his gaze following me.
We were never meant to be. He belonged to Scarlynn in the first place. Falling in love with each other was something we shouldn't have done. It was a mistake on our part, and now we are paying the price for our mistakes. It might hurt now, but I was sure that time will heal all wounds. Maybe Asher might heal from this.
But healing didn't exist for me. I was far too damaged, and no matter what, we can't put together broken glass no matter how much we might want.
The sound of the gunshot echoed in an empty area, my muscles tightening, dread coursing through me. I turned, and my eyes widened in shock as I watched Asher falling down on the ground with a loud thud, blood pooling around him.
My heart seemed to have stopped beating, my grip around my suitcase loosened. This should be some kind of a joke. This can't be happening right now.
No! I'm dreaming. It was just a nightmare, or something. I don't know, but this was definitely not happening now. I blinked twice and thrice, but nothing changed. Asher lay there in a pool of blood.
“Asher,” I screamed at the top of my lungs, rushing over to him. My knees weakened as I collapsed over him, heaviness settling in my stomach.
“Asher,” my lungs constricted, making it hard to breathe. “Asher, wake up. You can't leave me.” Tears streamed down my face.
“Asher, wake up, please. How do you expect me to live without you? You are the only hope I have left. Do you want me to leave without you?” I burst into sobs, trying to wake him up, but his eyes were shut. I grabbed his collar, shaking his arms, but he didn't wake up. He lay there lifeless.
My mind went blank. I couldn't think of anything. My body shook with convulsive gasps, tears streaming down my face. He can't die leaving me behind. He simply can't.
“Asher, please wake up. I love you so much, and I won't be able to live knowing that you are no more. I can't live with that fact. Please wake up, Asher,” my voice was laced with sadness, each word a struggle to speak.
Asher has to live no matter what. I was not ready to lose the only man I've ever loved in my entire life. I can't lose him.
My hand trembled as I moved it to his neck, pressing my fingers against his neck. I could barely feel his pulse. It was as if he was already dead, but losing hope wasn't an option at all.
I rose off the ground, my steps were unsteady as I rushed over to the plane. I had hired a private plane to fly me out of the country. It was far away from people, but at least there were people inside.
My breath came in short gasps as I finally entered the plane.
“Please help me!” I shouted between my sobs. Luckily, the flight attendant rushed out. The three of us now rushed over to where Asher was. They helped me carry him into the car. I got inside the car as they rested his head on my lap while they drove off, heading to the hospital.
At this point, I could barely utter a word except sobbing. I can't lose Asher. I can't lose him, or else I'd die.
