International Connections
Valentina ducked behind the dumpster as shots flew past her head. Her heart pounded so hard she could barely hear anything else. She clutched her phone tightly, the call still connected.
"Val! What's happening?" Alessio's voice crackled through the speaker.
"They found me!" she whispered. "The men from Project Phoenix! They're outside the hotel!"
Three guys in black clothes were searching the alley, guns in hand. They hadn't seen her yet.
"Where's Dante?" Alessio asked.
"Meeting with his contacts. I'm alone." Valentina took a deep breath. She needed to think clearly. "I found the files you asked for. The Blackwoods aren't just in America - they're everywhere."
One of the guys shouted something. They were getting closer.
"Stay hidden. We're coming," Alessio promised.
The call cut off. Valentina bit her lip to stop herself from crying out. She was scared, but she couldn't let fear take over. Not now.
A week had passed since the shocking finding about her father. One week of hiding, running, and looking for answers. The DNA test hadn't lied - somehow, her father was living, and his blood was changing just like hers.
Valentina clutched the flash drive in her pocket. On it was proof that Project Phoenix had spread beyond their city. The Blackwoods had labs in London, Paris, and Rome. They were experimenting on kids all over the world.
The footsteps grew closer. She held her breath.
"I know you're here, Miss Castello," a man called out. "We don't want to hurt you. We just want to talk."
Valentina almost laughed. Talk? With guns?
She looked around desperately. The alley had one exit, and the guys were blocking it. Her only hope was to make a distraction.
She pulled out her lighter - a gift from Alessio on her twenty-fifth birthday. In one quick move, she lit it and tossed it toward some cardboard boxes on the other side of the lane.
The fire caught quickly. As the men rushed toward it, Valentina ran in the opposite direction.
"Stop her!" someone yelled.
She ran faster than she ever had before, dodging through back streets until she reached the busy main road. There, she slowed to a walk, trying to fit in with the crowd.
Her phone buzzed with a text from Dante: "Meet at the safe house. Bring the files."
Twenty minutes later, Valentina fell onto a couch in a small apartment across town. Dante was pacing while Alessio studied the flash drive's contents on a laptop.
"It's worse than we thought," Alessio said. "The Blackwoods have operations in twelve countries."
"And they're all focused on blood experiments?" Dante asked.
Alessio nodded. "Blood, DNA, genetic modification. They call it 'evolutionary acceleration.'"
"They're trying to make super-humans," Valentina said. "And somehow, Dad is part of it."
The room fell silent. The idea that Julian Castello was living - and possibly working with their enemies - was still hard to accept.
"There's something else," Alessio added. "They have a headquarters in Switzerland. Everything seems to lead there."
Dante sat beside Valentina. "My contacts confirmed it. The real power behind Project Phoenix is in Europe. If we want answers about your father, that's where we need to go."
Valentina's phone buzzed again. She frowned at the screen. "It's Professor Williams."
"The one who helped you escape?" Alessio asked.
"Yes." Valentina put the phone on speaker. "Hello?"
"Valentina, thank God you're safe." The professor sounded worried. "I've been trying to reach you. There's something you need to know."
"What is it?"
"Oxford University has offered you a special research position. It starts next month."
Valentina blinked in surprise. "Oxford? But I never applied."
"I recommended you. But Valentina, listen carefully - this isn't just about research. I believe there's a Blackwood facility near Oxford. This could be your chance to get inside."
Valentina looked at Alessio and Dante, who both seemed suspicious.
"Why are you helping me?" she asked.
There was a pause. "Because your father saved my life once. And because what they're doing is wrong. The blood experiments, Project Phoenix - it's all going too far."
"You know my father?" Valentina's voice shook.
"Knew him. A long time ago." The professor paused. "There's more, but I can't tell you over the phone. Meet me tomorrow at the library, 2 PM."
After the call finished, Dante shook his head. "It could be a trap."
"Or it could be our way into their European operations," Alessio countered.
Valentina stood up, her mind racing. "If Dad is alive, if he's in Europe with the Blackwoods, I need to go."
"We go together," Alessio urged. "The family business could use some international expansion anyway."
"Oxford," Dante mused. "Perfect cover for setting up operations in Europe."
Valentina wasn't listening anymore. She was staring at a new text message: an unknown number had sent her a picture. Her hands shook as she opened it.
It was a picture of her father, sitting in what looked like a lab. He was older, with gray in his hair, but it was certainly him. And beside him was Alexandra, hooked up to machines, unconscious but living.
The message read: "Come alone tomorrow. Tell no one about this photo. Or she dies."
Valentina deleted the message quickly, her heart pounding. She couldn't tell Alessio or Dante. They would stop her from going, or insist on coming with her. But Alexandra's life was at stake.
"Val? What's wrong?" Alessio asked, spotting her pale face.
"Nothing," she lied. "Just tired. I think I need to rest before meeting the professor tomorrow."
That night, Valentina lay awake, planning. She would meet the professor, learn what she could, and then find a way to save Alexandra. Even if it meant facing her father alone.
Morning came too quickly. As she dressed, she found the chain her father had given her on her sixteenth birthday. She put it on, wondering if he would recognize it.
"Going somewhere?" Dante asked, appearing in her doorway.
"Just getting ready for the meeting," she said.
Dante studied her face. "Be careful, Val. Alessio would never recover if something happened to you."
She nodded, guilt eating at her.
At 1:30 PM, she slipped out alone, telling them she needed some time to clear her head before meeting the professor. Instead of going to the library, she followed the directions in a new text: "Central Park. Boat rental."
When she arrived, a man she'd never seen before was waiting.
"Valentina Castello?" he asked.
"Where's my father? Where's Alexandra?"
"Get in the boat." He pointed to a small rowboat.
"Not until you tell me—"
"Your friend doesn't have much time," he interrupted. "The experiments have progressed too far. Her body is rejecting the changes."
Fear clutched Valentina's heart. She stepped into the boat.
As they rowed to the center of the lake, away from prying eyes, the man gave her an envelope.
"Plane ticket to Zürich. Tonight. Come alone."
"How do I know this isn't a trap?"
The man smiled coldly. "You don't. But it's Alexandra's only chance. And if you want answers about your father, about what's happening to your blood..." He nodded at the envelope. "The choice is yours."
Before she could react, something hit her neck - a tiny dart. Her vision blurred instantly.
"What did you...?" she slurred.
"Insurance," the man said, his voice fading as darkness crept in. "To make sure you make the right choice."
The last thing Valentina saw before losing consciousness was a text lighting up her phone screen: Alessio calling.
But it was too late. She was already gone.
