The Decision
The Decision
Valentina woke up with a gasp, ice water dripping down her face. She tried to move but her hands were tied behind her back. Her head pounded.
"Finally," a deep voice said. "We were worried we'd have to use more serious methods to wake you."
Blinking away water, Valentina focused on the man standing before her. Tall, with gray hair and cold eyes. Next to him stood Alexandra, pale but living.
"Alexandra!" Valentina cried out. "Are you okay?"
Alexandra nodded slightly, but didn't speak. Something was wrong. Her eyes looked empty, faraway.
"What did you do to her?" Valentina asked.
The man smiled. "Project Phoenix is changing her. Just like it's changing you." He leaned closer. "Just like it changed your father."
"Where is he?" Valentina pulled against her bonds. "Where's my father?"
"Julian is busy. He sends his regards." The man set a folder on the table between them. "My name is Dr. Blackwood. And yes, those Blackwoods."
Valentina felt her blood run cold. The head of the family that had been hunting them for years was standing right in front of her.
"What do you want from me?" she asked.
"To give you a choice." Dr. Blackwood opened the box. Inside were photos of Oxford University, a beautiful apartment, and press credentials for a big international newspaper. "Your journalism skills are impressive. We have connections at The Global Tribune. They're prepared to offer you a position covering European politics."
Valentina stared at him in disbelief. "You kidnapped me to offer me a job?"
Dr. Blackwood laughed. "Not just any job. A dream job. Away from the family business. Away from the violence." He paused. "And close to our main research facility, where your father works."
"Why would I ever work for you?"
"You misunderstand. You wouldn't be working for us. You'd be working as a journalist, building your career. Meanwhile, we could help manage your... condition."
Valentina's hand shook. The strange changes in her blood. The headaches that were getting worse each day.
"The changes to your DNA are accelerating," Dr. Blackwood continued. "Without proper treatment, you'll experience increased pain, hallucinations, eventually organ failure." He tapped the folder. "We can help you. And Alexandra."
"And if I refuse?"
Dr. Blackwood's smile disappeared. "Then we take you anyway. But your friend dies, and your brother never knows what happened to you."
A door opened and guards entered, untying Valentina. One put a phone in her hand.
"Call your brother," Dr. Blackwood demanded. "Tell him you're safe. That you need time to think. You have one week to decide."
Three days later, Valentina sat in Alessio's apartment, looking out the window. She hadn't told him or Dante everything - not about her father working for the Blackwoods, not about the job offer, not about the changes killing her from inside.
"You're quiet," Alessio said, sitting beside her. "Still thinking about Oxford?"
She nodded. The cover story she'd given them was simple: after her "kidnapping," which she claimed was just a scare tactic, she'd gotten a legitimate offer to study journalism at Oxford while working for The Global Tribune.
"It's a big opportunity," she said quietly.
"But bad timing, with everything going on." Alessio studied her face. "You know you don't have to stay for us, right? For me?"
Valentina looked at her brother in surprise.
"I know you, Val. You've always wanted more than this life." He waved around them. "The family business, the constant danger, the secrets."
"But Alexandra—"
"Is recovering. The doctor says she'll be fine." Alessio didn't know that Alexandra was still with the Blackwoods, that the woman recovering in the hospital was someone else entirely - a trick Valentina had been forced to maintain.
"And what about you and Dante? The wedding?"
Alessio smiled. "We'll wait. Or you can fly back for it." He took her hand. "I spent years trying to protect you, keeping you close. Maybe that was wrong. Maybe you need to build your own life."
Tears filled Valentina's eyes. If only he knew the truth - that going to Oxford meant working near the people who had taken their father, who were testing on her blood, who threatened everything they loved.
"What if I can't protect myself?" she whispered.
"You're a Castello. You're stronger than you think." Alessio squeezed her hand. "And I'm always just a phone call away."
Later that night, Valentina sat alone in her bedroom, weighing her choices. If she stayed, the Blackwoods would take her by force and kill Alexandra. If she went, she might find her father, learn the truth about Project Phoenix, and protect her brother from afar.
Her phone buzzed with a text from an unknown number: "Your blood test results are getting worse. Time is running out."
Attached was a medical report showing her quickly changing DNA structure. The projection showed total cellular breakdown within three months.
Another text followed: "The choice is yours. But your family isn't safe either way."
Valentina felt a chill. She opened her laptop and started searching Oxford University, The Global Tribune, and Dr. Blackwood. If she was going into the lion's den, she needed to be prepared.
A knock at her door made her jump. Dante stood there, watching her carefully.
"Planning your big move?" he asked, pointing at her laptop.
"Just research," she said, closing it quickly.
"You know what's strange?" Dante entered, sitting on the edge of her bed. "The Global Tribune doesn't usually hire students with no international experience. And that Oxford program is normally closed to foreign students."
Valentina's heart raced. "I got lucky, I guess."
"Luck." Dante smiled, but his eyes were serious. "Valentina, whatever trouble you're in, you can tell us."
For a moment, she considered telling him everything. But then her phone buzzed again. A picture of Alessio walking down the street, clearly taken that day, with the message: "They die first if you talk."
"I'm fine," she lied. "Just nervous about such a big change."
Dante didn't look convinced, but he nodded. "Well, if you need anything..."
"I know."
After he left, Valentina made her choice. She would go to Oxford. She would find her father. She would learn what Project Phoenix was really about. And somehow, she would protect her family from afar.
The next morning, she booked her ticket. One week in London for instruction, then Oxford. As she packed, she slipped a small tracking device into the lining of her bag - one Alessio wouldn't know to look for.
At the airport, Alessio hugged her tightly. "Be amazing," he whispered.
"Take care of yourself," she responded, fighting tears. "And Dante."
"Always."
As she walked through security, her phone buzzed one final time: "Wise choice. A car will meet you in London. Remember, we're always watching."
On the plane, Valentina settled into her seat, already making a plan. The Blackwoods thought they were using her, but she would use them instead. She would find information about her father, about her changing blood, about Project Phoenix.
What they didn't know was that Valentina had made copies of all the Blackwood files Alessio had found. Files that held secrets even Dr. Blackwood might not know.
As the plane took off, Valentina looked out the window at her city getting smaller below. She touched the necklace her father had given her, now containing a tiny microphone Dante had helped her place.
"I'm coming, Dad," she whispered. "And I'm going to bring down the whole Blackwood empire."
Her phone lit up with a new message. Not from the Blackwoods this time, but from someone else - a contact she'd never seen before. The message contained only an address in London and six words that made her blood freeze:
"He's not your father anymore. Run."
