The Expansion

The Expansion
Valentina's hand connected with Marco's jaw, sending him stumbling backward. She lunged forward, taking his gun before he could recover.
"You lied to me!" she yelled, pointing the weapon at his chest. "My whole life has been a lie!"
Marco wiped blood from his mouth, smiling despite the pain. "Not all of it. Your friendship with Alexandra was real enough."
Valentina glanced at Zoe—no, Alexandra—who stood frozen by the tower window, her face pale with shock.
"I'm not a Blackwood," Zoe whispered. "I can't be."
Reed stepped between them, package still in hand. "The DNA doesn't lie. You were switched at birth—the Castello son replaced by a Blackwood daughter. A perfect spy who wouldn't even know she was spying."
The tower door burst open. Alessio and Dante rushed in, guns drawn.
"Drop it, Marco," Alessio ordered.
Marco laughed. "Too late. The Blackwoods already have what they need." He nodded toward Zoe. "And now they have their heir back too."
Bullets smashed the remaining windows as more Blackwood agents fired from outside. Everyone dove for safety behind the lighthouse equipment.
"We need to get out of here," Dante yelled over the gunfire. "The stairs are our only exit."
Valentina crawled toward Zoe, who sat huddled behind a metal cabinet.
"Zoe, look at me," Valentina said, grabbing her friend's shoulders. "I don't care what that envelope says. You're still my friend."
Zoe's eyes filled with tears. "But what if he's right? What if I'm not who I think I am? What if I've been used my whole life?"
"Then we'll figure it out together," Valentina promised.

Six months later, Valentina sat in the sleek conference room of Moretti-Russo Enterprises, watching Alessio and Dante present their latest business venture to possible investors.
"Our shipping company has expanded to three new ports," Alessio stated, pointing to a map. "All legitimate operations, all highly profitable."
Dante clicked to the next slide. "And with our new tech division, we're positioning ourselves as leaders in cybersecurity."
The investors nodded approvingly. No one noted that just months ago, these two men had been deadly enemies. No one knew about the bodies buried beneath their success or the blood that had cemented their relationship.
Valentina caught Zoe's eye across the table and smiled. After the lighthouse showdown, they'd fled by boat while Alessio and Dante held off Marco's men. Reed had vanished in the chaos, but not before pressing the envelope into Valentina's hands.
The DNA test had proved it: Zoe was born a Castello, switched with Alexandra Blackwood as an infant. The revelation had nearly broken her.
"We'd like to introduce our newest partner," Alessio said, interrupting Valentina's thoughts. "Alexandra Castello, who brings valuable connections in tech and international finance."
Zoe—now using her given name Alexandra—stood up. She looked different now—more confident, her hair cut short, her college clothes replaced by a simple but stylish suit.
"Thank you," she said. "My family connections have opened doors previously closed to the Moretti-Russo enterprise."
Only Valentina knew what she meant. Alexandra had embraced her Castello background while leveraging her Blackwood connections—people who still thought she was loyal to them. It was a dangerous game, but it was working.
The meeting finished successfully with handshakes and promises of funding. As the investors filed out, Dante pulled Alessio close, saying something that made him laugh. Their friendship had blossomed from hatred to something neither man had expected.
"They seem happy," Alexandra stated, joining Valentina by the window.
"In their own twisted way," Valentina agreed. "Who would have thought my brother would fall for his worst enemy?"
Alexandra's phone buzzed. Her face clouded as she read the message.
"Marco?" Valentina asked.
Alexandra nodded. "He wants another meeting. The Blackwoods are getting suspicious about why I haven't delivered what they want."
"Which is?"
"The complete Blackwood Files. They know your father divided them into pieces before he disappeared. They've found some, but not all."
Valentina sighed. "We still don't know where our parents are. Or if they're even alive."
Alexandra squeezed her hand. "We'll find them. But first, we need to deal with Marco."

That night, Valentina sat alone in her apartment, studying her father's book again. The coded entries had started making more sense since she'd found the key hidden in an old family picture.
Her phone rang—unknown number.
"Hello?" she replied cautiously.
"Valentina." The voice was warped but familiar. "It's time."
Her heart raced. "Dad? Is that you?"
"Listen carefully," the voice continued. "Alexandra is in danger. The switch was only part of the plan. They never intended her to survive once her usefulness ended."
"What are you talking about? Where are you?"
"Marco knows she's working with you. He's planned everything from the beginning—the kidnapping, the lighthouse, all of it. He wanted her to find her way back to you."
"Why?" Valentina asked.
"Because of what's in her blood. The final key is encoded in her DNA. That's why they took her as a baby."
A crash from the hallway made Valentina jump. Someone was trying to break in.
"Dad, someone's here—"
"Find Reed," her father interrupted quickly. "He has the equipment to extract the code from her blood. But you have to hurry. Marco's men are already—"
The call cut off as Valentina's door burst open. Three armed men burst in.
She dove for her gun, but they were faster. A towel was pressed against her face, and darkness swallowed her.

Valentina woke in a clean white room, strapped to a hospital bed. Her head pounded. Medical devices surrounded her, beeping steadily.
"Good, you're awake." Marco stepped into view, wearing a lab coat. "We need you conscious for this part."
Valentina fought against the restraints. "Where's Alexandra?"
"Nearby," Marco said, preparing a syringe. "You'll see her soon enough."
"What are you doing?"
Marco smiled coldly. "Completing what started twenty-five years ago. The Blackwoods didn't just switch babies for a spy. They did it for this moment—when both of you would be together again."
He leaned closer, his voice dropping to a whisper. "Did you ever wonder why your parents had to run? Why the Blackwoods have hunted your family for generations? It's because your bloodline contains a genetic anomaly—a sequence that, when combined with Alexandra's, unlocks something powerful."
"You're insane," Valentina spat.
"Maybe," Marco agreed, putting the needle into her arm. "But soon I'll be the most powerful man in the world."
The door opened, and Alexandra was wheeled in on another bed, dazed and pale.
"Perfect timing," Marco said to his assistants. "Begin the transfusion. Both ways."
Valentina felt her blood being sucked out as Alexandra's was pumped in. Her vision began to blur, but not before she saw Alexandra's eyes snap open. They weren't her normal blue—they glowed with a strange golden light.
"Marco," Valentina gasped, "you don't understand what you're doing."
Marco leaned down, his face inches from hers. "What don't I understand?"
Valentina's voice was barely a whisper as darkness closed in. "She's not just a Castello."
The last thing she saw was Alexandra's restraints melting away as if burned by an unseen fire.
