Family Dinner

Family Dinner
The black Mercedes screeched to a stop in front of Alessio's mansion. Valentina gripped the driving wheel, knuckles white.
"Wow, your brother's place is huge!" Zoe exclaimed, eyes wide with joy. "You said he was in business, but not that he was loaded!"
Valentina forced a smile. "He's...successful." She checked her phone again. No information from Reed since their meeting three days ago. No news about her parents. And certainly no explanation about the picture of a brother she never knew existed.
"You've been weird since we got rescued," Zoe said, studying her friend's face. "Are you sure this dinner is a good idea?"
"It'll be fine," Valentina lied. "Alessio really wants to meet you after everything that happened."
What she couldn't say was that bringing Zoe to dinner was her only choice. After the kidnapping, Zoe had become wary of "Lucy Campo" and her mysterious family. A normal family dinner might convince her friend that there was nothing strange going on.
"Let's go in," Valentina said, grabbing the wine bottle from the trunk. "And remember, my brother can be... intense."
The front door opened before they reached it. Luca stood there, his normal cold stare softened into what might have been an attempt at a welcoming smile.
"Miss Campo," he said slowly. "And guest. The gentlemen are waiting in the dining room."
Zoe whispered, "Your brother has a butler?"
"He's more of a... personal assistant," Valentina whispered back.
They followed Luca through the mansion, which had been carefully staged to look less threatening. The security cams were hidden. The arms display was gone. Even the guards were dressed in casual clothes, claiming to be household staff.
In the dining room, Alessio and Dante stood as the women entered. Both men wore casual clothes instead of their normal expensive suits, but nothing could hide the dangerous energy that surrounded them.
"Lucy!" Alessio stepped forward, greeting his sister in a way that felt stiff and rehearsed. "And you must be Zoe. We've heard so much about you."
"All good things, I hope," Zoe answered, shaking his hand. Her eyes darted to Dante. "And you are..."
"Dante Russo," he said easily. "Business partner."
Valentina saw Zoe's eyes widen slightly in recognition. The Russo name was well-known in the city, even to college students.
"Let's eat," Valentina said quickly. "I'm starving."
The first few minutes were awkward. Alessio tried small talk about college classes. Dante asked about Zoe's family with an intensity that made her shift uncomfortable. Valentina kept steering the talk to safe topics, all while watching Zoe for any sign that she suspected something was off.
"So how exactly did you get kidnapped?" Dante asked suddenly, ignoring Valentina's warning glare.
Zoe put down her fork. "It was weird. This guy pretending to be a professor seemed obsessed with Lucy's articles for the school paper. Then, out of nowhere, people grabbed me after class." She looked at Valentina. "They kept asking about your family. The Castellos."
The room went quiet. Valentina's heart beat.
"They must have been confused," Alessio said easily. "Campo, Castello... similar enough."
"That's what I thought," Zoe nodded. "But then I got curious and looked up the Castellos online." She pulled out her phone. "Funny thing though, I couldn't find much except this really old article."
She slid her phone across the table. On the screen was a newspaper headline: "Journalist Julian Castello and Family Missing After Death Threats."
"Weird coincidence, right?" Zoe said. "But the Valentina Castello mentioned would be our age now."
Valentina felt stuck. Lying more would only make things worse, but the truth could put Zoe in danger again.
"Zoe—" she began.
A loud crash from the kitchen stopped her. Then came yells and the unmistakable sound of gunfire.
Alessio and Dante moved quickly. Dante flipped the heavy dinner table onto its side for cover while Alessio pulled out a gun from under his chair.
"Get down!" Valentina yelled, pulling a stunned Zoe to the floor behind the table.
"What's happening?" Zoe cried. "Why does your brother have a gun?"
Before Valentina could answer, Luca burst into the room, blood pouring from a cut on his forehead. "Shepherds," he gasped. "At least twelve. They came through the back."
Dante tossed him a weapon. "Secure the east exit."
Zoe stared at Valentina, her face pale with shock. "Lucy, what is going on?"
"I'll explain everything," Valentina promised, "but right now we need to move."
Alessio led them through a hidden door behind a bookshelf, into a small hallway. Zoe was shaking, tears running down her face.
"You're not Lucy Campo, are you?" she whispered.
"No," Valentina admitted as they rushed down the passage. "My name is Valentina Castello. My family is... complicated."
"They're mafia," Zoe said simply. "I'm not stupid. The Russos control half the city's shipping."
Valentina couldn't deny it. "I was trying to protect you by keeping you away from all this."
"Great job," Zoe said sadly.
They reached a small garage holding three cars. Alessio gave Valentina keys and a gun.
"Take the back roads to the safe house," he ordered. "We'll handle this and meet you there."
"I'm not leaving you," Valentina argued.
"This isn't a discussion," Dante cut in. "They're here for a reason, and we need to find out what it is."
Valentina wanted to fight more, but one look at Zoe's terrified face changed her mind. "Fine. But be careful."
Dante's expression softened suddenly. "Always am, little Castello."
As Valentina drove away with Zoe, gunshots echoed behind them. Zoe sat in stunned silence for several minutes before finally speaking.
"Did those men who kidnapped me tell the truth? About your parents?"
Valentina gripped the driving wheel tighter. "Some of it. My parents are missing. People are after them—and me—because of something my father discovered years ago."
"And you're hiding at college pretending to be someone else," Zoe concluded. "While your brother runs a crime family."
"It's not that simple," Valentina said. "Alessio is... complicated. And Dante—"
"Is clearly more than a business partner," Zoe interrupted. "I saw how they look at each other."
Despite everything, Valentina smiled slightly. "That's... new. And also complicated."
They drove in quiet for a while before Zoe asked, "Where are we going?"
"Somewhere safe," Valentina answered. "I need to keep you hidden until I can figure out how to get you away from all this."
"What if I don't want to go?" Zoe asked quietly.
Valentina glanced at her in surprise. "What?"
"You're my friend," Zoe said simply. "Whoever you really are. And you're in trouble. I'm not just going to abandon you."
Valentina felt a lump in her throat. "It's not safe."
"Life isn't safe," Zoe responded. "My dad's a cop, you know. He taught me that bad things happen no matter what you do. The question is whether you face them alone or with people you trust."
Before Valentina could reply, her phone rang. Unknown number.
She put it on speaker. "Hello?"
"Miss Castello," Reed's voice came through. "I hope I'm not interrupting your family dinner."
Valentina tensed. "How did you know about that?"
"I know many things," Reed responded. "Including that the Shepherds just attacked your brother's home. But they weren't after him or Mr. Russo."
"What do you mean?"
"They were sent to retrieve something hidden in the mansion," Reed stated. "Something your father left there years ago."
"The Blackwood Files?" Valentina guessed.
"A piece of them," Reed revealed. "Did you read the journal?"
"Some of it," Valentina admitted, aware of Zoe listening closely. "Enough to have questions about a brother I apparently have."
Reed was silent for a moment. "So you found the photo. That complicates things."
"Why?" Valentina asked. "Who is he? Where is he?"
"He's closer than you think," Reed said cryptically. "In fact, you've already met him."
The car swerved as Valentina's hands shook. "Tell me!"
"Not over the phone," Reed said. "Meet me at the address I'm sending. Come alone."
"I'm not alone," Valentina said, looking at Zoe.
"Bring her if you must," Reed sighed. "But no one else."
The call stopped, and a text with an address appeared.
"Are we going?" Zoe asked quietly.
Valentina paused, then nodded. "I need answers."
As they reached the address—an old lighthouse on the coast—Valentina's phone rang again. This time it was Alessio.
"Don't go to the safe house," he said quickly. "It's been compromised."
"We're not going there," Valentina assured him. "Reed called. He knows about the attack. Says the Shepherds were looking for something hidden in the mansion."
"They found it," Alessio said sadly. "A box hidden in father's old study. They killed three of our men to get it."
"What was in it?"
"I don't know. It was sealed." Alessio paused. "Valentina, there's something else. We captured one of them. Before he died, he said something about 'the Castello heir.' Not you. Someone else."
Valentina's heart raced. "The brother in the photo."
"What brother? What photo?" Alessio asked.
"I'll explain later," Valentina promised. "We're meeting Reed to get answers."
"Wait for us," Alessio demanded. "Don't go alone."
"I have to," Valentina said. "He might know where Mom and Dad are."
She stopped the call despite Alessio's protests.
The lighthouse loomed ahead, its beam cutting through the darkness. As they parked, Zoe touched Valentina's arm.
"Whatever happens in there," she said, "I've got your back."
Valentina smiled happily. "Thanks. Just... stay close."
They climbed the twisting stairs to the top of the lighthouse. Reed stood by the fence, looking out at the sea.
"I was beginning to think you wouldn't come," he said without turning around.
"Tell me about my brother," Valentina insisted.
Reed turned slowly. "Your parents had two children. You were the second."
"Where is he now?"
Reed's eyes flickered past Valentina. "Why don't you ask him yourself?"
Valentina spun around, expecting to see someone in the hallway. But there was only Zoe, looking confused.
"There's no one there," Valentina said.
"Look closer," Reed pushed.
Valentina turned back to him, annoyed. "Stop playing games."
"I'm not," Reed said quietly. "Your brother has been with you all along. The Blackwoods hid him in plain sight, raising him as one of their own." His eyes moved carefully to Zoe. "Or should I say, raising her as one of their own."
Valentina froze, trying to understand his words. "Zoe? That's impossible."
"Is it?" Reed asked. "The Blackwoods are masters of deception. They took your brother as an infant and replaced him with one of their own. A spy who would grow up alongside you, become your friend, and lead them right to the Blackwood Files when the time came."
Valentina looked at Zoe, who seemed truly shocked.
"He's lying," Zoe whispered. "I'm not... I can't be..."
"DNA doesn't lie," Reed said, pulling out an envelope. "The results are in here. Along with the truth about who your friend really is."
Before he could hand it over, the lighthouse windows burst inward. Glass rained down as armed people rappelled into the room.
"Run!" Reed yelled, drawing a gun.
Valentina grabbed Zoe's hand and pulled her toward the stairs, but stopped dead when she saw who was coming up to meet them.
Marco stood there, smiling coldly, a gun pointed at her heart.
"Hello, Valentina," he said. "And hello, Alexandra Blackwood." He nodded at Zoe. "Your grandfather sends his regards."
