The First Ball

The First Ball
Valentina gripped her small gun under her bag as she walked up the grand stairs of City Hall. Her heart pounded against her ribs. Two of Alessio's men stood at the door, their eyes widening when they spotted her.
"She's here," one whispered into his earphones.
Without breaking her stride, Valentina slipped between them. "Tell my brother I need five minutes before he tries to kill me."
Inside, the charity dinner was in full swing. Rich people in fancy clothes laughed and drank champagne like the city wasn't about to be poisoned. Valentina scanned the room, looking for Victoria. The betrayal still stung like a fresh burn.
"You're either very brave or very stupid," a voice said behind her.
Valentina spun around to face Alessio. Her brother looked tired, dark lines under his eyes, but his suit was perfect as always.
"I could say the same about you," she responded. "Hosting a party while planning mass murder."
Alessio's eyes narrowed. He took her elbow and led her to a quiet spot. "Is that what you think? That I want to kill everyone in this city?"
"The evidence was in our parents' files. Your name was at the top of The Phoenix Circle list."
A flash of something crossed Alessio's face – hurt, maybe even fear. "You found their research?"
Before she could answer, the crowd parted as Dante entered the hall. People whispered behind their hands, shocked to see the head of the rival family at Alessio's event.
"Your boyfriend's here," Valentina said coldly.
"Our relationship is... complicated," Alessio responded. "But necessary."
"For what? Your evil plan?"
Alessio sighed. "We don't have much time. Dr. Chen is safe, by the way. I moved him when I learned Victoria was hunting him."
Valentina blinked in surprise. "You saved him?"
"Of course I did. He's the only one who can safely remove the chip our parents put in you."
The room suddenly felt too hot, too crowded. "So you know about that too."
"Val, I've been trying to protect you since they disappeared. Everything I've done—"
"Alessio," Dante called, approaching them with two champagne glasses. "We have company."
He pointed toward the entrance where the mayor had arrived with his entourage. Among them was Victoria, looking perfectly at ease in a blue dress.
"She has guts, showing up here," Valentina mumbled.
"She thinks we don't know," Alessio said softly. "Let's keep it that way."
Dante gave Valentina a glass. "Drink up. We need to put on a good show."
"I don't understand any of this," Valentina said, her voice shaking slightly. "Last week you two were trying to kill each other. Now you're what – dating? While the city is in danger?"
"It's called hiding in plain sight," Dante answered. "No one suspects enemies to work together."
"That's why we needed to make our relationship public tonight," Alessio added. "The Phoenix Circle thinks they have us fighting each other while they move forward with their plan."
"Trust me, little brother," Dante said with a smirk, "nobody saw this coming."
Valentina nearly choked on her champagne. "Little brother?"
Alessio's jaw stiffened. "Not now, Dante."
"Oh, she doesn't know?" Dante raised an eyebrow. "Interesting."
Valentina's head spun. "Know what?"
"Later," Alessio promised. "Right now, we need to—"
"Valentina Castello," a smooth voice interrupted. A tall woman with silver hair and sharp eyes stood before them. "At last we meet."
Alessio stressed. "Madam Director."
"You know me?" the woman asked Valentina.
"Should I?" Valentina replied warily.
The woman smiled coldly. "I was your mother's closest friend. And her greatest disappointment."
Something clicked in Valentina's mind. "You're the head of The Phoenix Circle."
"Such a smart girl. Just like Maria." The woman's eyes gleamed. "I've been watching you for years, waiting for you to lead me to your parents' research. And now, thanks to Victoria, you have."
Valentina's blood ran cold. "What have you done with Sophia?"
"Your friend is safe. For now." The woman touched Valentina's face. "You look so much like your mother. Same fire in your eyes."
Valentina pulled away. "What do you want?"
"The antidote your parents created. The one inside you." The woman glanced at Alessio. "Your brother has been quite stubborn about handing you over."
"I would never—" Alessio started.
"Save it," the woman cut him off. "Your performance as a loyal Circle member was impressive, but I've always known where your true loyalties lie."
She turned back to Valentina. "In one hour, we release the compound into the water supply. By morning, this city will be under our control. Unless..."
"Unless what?" Valentina asked.
"Come with me willingly. Let us extract the chip. Your friends will live, and we'll spare the city."
Dante stepped closer to Alessio. "That wasn't the deal."
"The deal has changed," the woman said simply.
Across the room, Victoria was watching them. She raised her glass slightly – a signal.
"I need time to think," Valentina said.
"You have until midnight." The woman rejoined the mayor's group.
"Don't even consider it," Alessio warned softly.
"What choice do we have?" Valentina asked.
"We have a plan," Dante promised her. "But you need to trust us."
"Trust you?" Valentina laughed coldly. "When you've been lying to me my whole life? What did she mean about you being brothers?"
Alessio ran a hand through his hair. "Our father had... complications in his life."
"Julian Castello was my half-brother," Dante revealed. "Making me your uncle, technically."
Valentina felt like the floor was tilting beneath her feet. "That's why you've been helping me? Because we're family?"
"Family is everything," Dante said softly.
The lights suddenly dimmed. The mayor took the stage for his speech.
"We need to move," Alessio whispered. "Dante's men are in position at the water facility."
"And Sophia?" Valentina pressed.
"We have a lead," Dante promised her. "But right now, we need to get you somewhere safe."
As they made their way toward a side exit, Victoria stopped them. "Leaving so soon?"
"Not now, traitor," Valentina hissed.
Victoria grabbed her wrist. "You've got it all wrong. I've been undercover in the Circle for years. Ask your brother."
Valentina looked at Alessio, who nodded slightly.
"The photo of us meeting was staged," Victoria explained quickly. "To convince them I had turned you in."
"Why should I believe you?"
Victoria pressed something into Valentina's hand – a small key. "Your mother gave me this before she disappeared. It opens a safe deposit box at First National. Everything you need to bring down the Circle is there."
Before Valentina could reply, gunshots rang out. People screamed and dropped to the floor.
"They're here," Dante said sadly, drawing his gun.
Alessio pushed Valentina toward Victoria. "Get her out now!"
As they rushed toward the kitchen, Valentina looked back. Alessio and Dante stood side by side, guns raised against the coming figures.
"Come on!" Victoria pushed, pulling her through the swinging doors.
They burst into the alley behind City Hall. A black car waited with its engine going.
"Get in," Victoria ordered.
Valentina paused. "How do I know this isn't another trap?"
Victoria's face softened. "Your mother called you her little bird because you were free in ways she never could be. That's not in any file."
The back door of the car swung open. Sitting inside was a thin, old Asian man with kind eyes.
"Dr. Chen," Valentina gasped.
"Hello, Valentina," he said with a gentle smile. "I've been waiting a long time to meet you."
As Valentina climbed into the car, a bullet shattered the back window. Victoria cried out, blood bursting on her shoulder as she fell forward.
"Go!" she yelled to the driver. "Get her to safety!"
The car peeled away, leaving Victoria bleeding in the lane.
"We can't leave her!" Valentina argued.
"We must," Dr. Chen said sadly. "The chip inside you is the key to everything."
As they raced through the dark streets, Valentina clutched the small key Victoria had given her. The truth was within reach, but at what cost?
Her phone buzzed with a text from an unknown number: "The Phoenix rises at midnight. Come to where it all began or everyone you love dies. Including your parents."
Valentina's heart stopped. "My parents are alive?"
