New Horizons

New Horizons
Valentina ducked as a bullet cracked the window above her head. Glass poured down like sharp rain. She crawled across the floor of her parents' old office, clutching the university acceptance letter in her hand.
"Is this how they welcome all new students?" Dr. Chen asked, his voice strangely calm as he huddled behind an overturned desk.
"Only the special ones," Valentina answered, checking her gun. Empty. Great.
The door burst open. Valentina grabbed a paperweight, ready to throw it, when Dante stepped through, gun raised.
"They're gone," he stated, lowering his weapon. "For now."
Valentina's shoulders slumped with relief. "That's the third attack this week."
"The Phoenix Circle doesn't give up easily," Dante said, helping Dr. Chen to his feet. "Especially not after what you did to them."
What she had done was reveal the Circle's plan to control the city's water supply. The chip inside her neck—now safely removed by Dr. Chen—had held all the evidence needed to bring down most of their operation. The news had called her a hero. But heroes, Valentina had learned, made dangerous foes.
"Did you get what you came for?" Dante asked, pointing at the papers in her hand.
Valentina nodded. "My parents' old research. And this." She held up the acceptance letter from Castle City University.
"You're really going through with it?" Dante looked surprised.
"I am," she said firmly. "My parents were journalists before they were scientists. That's how they uncovered the Circle in the first place. Maybe I can finish what they started."
Dante didn't look convinced. "Alessio won't like it."
"Alessio doesn't have to like it," Valentina answered. "It's my life."
"Your brother has been through hell to keep you safe," Dante told her. "We all have."
The weight of the past months pressed down on Valentina. The revelation that her parents might still be living had led to a wild chase across the country. The trail had gone cold in Mexico, but Valentina refused to give up hope. Somewhere out there, her mother and father were hiding—or being held prisoner.
"I need to do this," she said quietly. "I need to be more than just Alessio Moretti's sister."
As they drove back to Alessio's house, Valentina stared out the window at the city she'd nearly died to save. Parts of it were still recovering from the fight at the water treatment plant. Other parts had never been worth saving in the first place.
Alessio was waiting for them in his study, moving like a caged animal. His face relaxed slightly when he saw Valentina was unhurt.
"You could have called," he said, his tone caught between rage and relief.
"My phone died," Valentina lied.
Alessio didn't believe her, but he let it slide. "Did you find anything useful?"
"Maybe." Valentina spread her parents' papers across his desk. "There's a mention of someone called 'The Blackwood Heir' who was helping them. Mom wrote that if anything happened to them, this person would protect their research."
"Blackwood," Alessio repeated, sharing a look with Dante. "That's not a name we want to get mixed up with."
"Why not?"
"Old money. Old power," Dante stated. "They make families like ours look like corner drug dealers."
"Well, I need to find them," Valentina urged. "And I have a plan." She put her acceptance letter on top of the papers.
Alessio picked it up, his face darkening as he read. "Journalism? At CCU? Absolutely not."
"It's not your decision," Valentina said firmly.
"It's suicide!" Alessio slammed the letter down. "The Phoenix Circle has people everywhere, especially in academia. They'll kill you the first day."
"Let them try," Valentina dared. "I'm tired of hiding."
"This isn't about hiding," Alessio maintained. "It's about staying alive long enough to find our parents."
"And how long will that take?" Valentina asked. "Months? Years? I can't put my life on hold forever!"
The brothers shared another look. Dante gave a slight nod.
Alessio sighed heavily. "There's something we haven't told you."
Valentina's stomach tightened. "What now?"
"We found Mom's necklace in a pawn shop in Tijuana last week," Alessio said softly. "The owner said a woman matching her description sold it to him three months ago."
Hope grew in Valentina's chest. "That means she's alive! We have to go back, we have to—"
"We've already sent people," Dante interrupted. "The trail leads to Blackwood Industries."
Valentina sank into a chair. "The Blackwood Heir."
"Exactly." Alessio leaned against his desk. "And Blackwood's youngest son happens to be starting at CCU this fall."
Understanding dawned on Valentina. "You want me to get close to him."
"It would give us an advantage," Alessio admitted.
"So you'll let me go to college as long as I'm spying for you?" Valentina asked sadly.
"I'm letting you go because I know you'll go anyway," Alessio responded. "At least this way you have a purpose."
Valentina wanted to fight, but the thought of finding her parents overpowered her pride. "Fine. Who is this Blackwood heir I'm supposed to befriend?"
Dante gave her a photo of a young man with dark eyes and a serious expression. "Sebastian Blackwood. Twenty-one. Brilliant but troubled. His father died under mysterious circumstances last year."
"And you think he knows where our parents are?"
"We think he's protecting them," Alessio said. "Or using them."
Valentina studied the picture. There was something familiar about Sebastian's eyes, like she'd seen them before.
"I'll do it," she decided. "But I'm still studying journalism. That's non-negotiable."
Alessio nodded reluctantly. "Just promise me you'll be careful. The Circle may be wounded, but they're still dangerous."
"I know how to take care of myself," Valentina reminded him. "You made sure of that."
Two weeks later, Valentina stood in her new dorm room, unpacking the few things she'd brought. Her roommate hadn't come yet, giving her time to secure the room according to Dante's instructions. Sensors on the windows. A special lock on the door. A gun hidden in her desk drawer.
A knock surprised her. She approached the door carefully, hand reaching for her hidden weapon.
"Who is it?" she called.
"Housing department," a male voice answered. "Just checking that everything's satisfactory."
Valentina looked through the peephole. A tall young guy in a university polo shirt stood in the hallway. Dark eyes. Serious look. Sebastian Blackwood.
Her heart racing, she opened the door. "Everything's fine."
Sebastian smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. "Valentina Castello, right?"
"How do you know my name?" she asked, quickly on guard.
"I make it my business to know when the daughter of Julian and Maria Castello enrolls at my university," he answered quietly. "Especially when she's being hunted by the same people who are hunting me."
Valentina glanced down the empty hallway. "Maybe you should come in."
Sebastian stepped inside, closing the door behind him. "I've been waiting for you to find me."
"Why didn't you just contact my brother?" Valentina asked.
"Because I don't trust your brother," Sebastian said simply. "Or your uncle."
"But you trust me?"
"Your parents did." Sebastian pulled a small object from his pocket—a flash drive shaped like a little bird. "They left this with my father before they disappeared. It's meant for you, but it comes with a warning."
Valentina reached for it, but Sebastian held it back.
"The warning first," he urged. "Your parents discovered something far worse than mind control. The Phoenix Circle was just the beginning. There's another group, more powerful, more dangerous."
"Who?" Valentina asked.
"They call themselves the Shepherds," Sebastian answered. "And they're not trying to control people's minds. They're trying to change them permanently."
He put the flash drive in her palm. "Your parents found a way to stop them, but they needed someone they could trust to finish their work."
"Why me? Why not Alessio?"
Sebastian's face darkened. "Because, Valentina, according to this drive, your brother might be one of them."
Valentina stared at the little bird flash drive, her world tilting once again. "That's impossible."
"Is it?" Sebastian challenged. "How well do you really know Alessio Moretti?"
Before she could answer, her phone buzzed with a text from Dante: "LEAVE CAMPUS NOW. CIRCLE FOUND YOU. SENDING EXTRACTION TEAM."
Sebastian read the letter over her shoulder. "Don't," he said quickly. "It's a trap."
"How do I know you're not the trap?" Valentina asked.
Sebastian pulled up his sleeve, showing a tattoo on his wrist—a small bird identical to the flash drive. "Because I'm the real Blackwood heir, and I've been protecting your parents for the past year."
The building's fire alarm suddenly blared. Outside, people began fleeing.
"They're coming," Sebastian warned. "We need to go—now."
"Where?" Valentina asked, split between trusting this stranger and the brother who had always protected her.
"To your parents," Sebastian said, extending his hand. "It's time for a family reunion."
