Unexpected Alliance

Unexpected Alliance
Cold water splashed across Valentina's face, jolting her awake. She gasped, blinking rapidly as the world came into focus. Her hands were tied to a chair, and her head beat like a drum.
"Wake up," a gruff voice demanded.
Valentina looked up to see Detective Chen standing over her, empty water glass in hand. Behind him, Rico was tied to another chair, still asleep.
"You," she spat. "The Architect."
Chen laughed. "Me? I'm just the messenger." He set the glass down and checked Rico's heartbeat. "Your friend will live. Unlike your brother, if you don't start talking."
Fear shot through Valentina's chest. "Where's Alessio?"
"That depends on what you tell me." Chen pulled up a chair. "Where are the Blackwood files?"
Valentina fought against her restraints. "I don't have any files."
"Wrong answer." Chen pulled out his phone and showed her a video. Alessio was bound to a chair in a dark room, blood dripping from a cut on his forehead. Thomas Blackwood sat beside him, equally damaged.
"They're alive for now," Chen said, putting the phone away. "But my employer is getting impatient."
"Your employer?" Valentina seized on this. "Not Eleanor?"
Something flashed across Chen's face - surprise, perhaps. "Eleanor Blackwood was just a pawn. The Architect has been pulling the strings for years."
The door opened, and a masked person entered. Tall and slim, dressed all in black.
"Enough talk." The voice was electronically masked. "Bring her."

They blinded Valentina before moving her. When they removed it, she found herself in what looked like an abandoned hotel hall. Alessio and Thomas were tied to chairs about twenty feet away.
"Val!" Alessio called out, relief washing over his bruised face.
"Touching," said the masked person, circling Valentina's chair. "The Moretti siblings, reunited one last time."
Thomas caught Valentina's eye. Despite his split lip, he gave her a barely noticeable nod.
"What do you want?" Valentina asked.
"What Eleanor couldn't finish." The figure stopped in front of her. "Control of the flood channels. Access to the foundation plans. And the Blackwood heir."
"I'm right here," Thomas said boldly.
The figure laughed. "Not you. The real heir." They turned to Chen. "Bring her in."
Chen left and returned moments later with a young woman. She couldn't have been more than eighteen, with Eleanor's ice-blue eyes and golden hair.
"Meet Sophia Blackwood," the masked figure declared. "Eleanor's daughter."
Valentina stared in shock. "But Thomas-"
"Is Eleanor's nephew, as he claimed," the figure stated. "Though he failed to mention his cousin."
Thomas looked away, shame written across his face.
"You knew?" Alessio asked him.
"I came to warn you," Thomas maintained. "But I couldn't expose Sophia. She was hidden for her protection."
"From whom?" Valentina asked.
"From me," the masked person said, finally removing their mask.
Valentina gasped. The face belonged to a woman in her fifties, with sharp features and cold eyes.
"Victoria Blackwood," she introduced herself. "Eleanor's sister. Thomas's mother."
"But you're supposed to be dead," Thomas whispered.
Victoria smiled bitterly. "A necessary deception. Eleanor was becoming... unstable. Her flood plan was too messy, too public. I prefer a more surgical approach."
Sophia stood quietly beside Chen, her face unreadable.
"So you're The Architect," Valentina said.
"Of the family's true vision," Victoria confirmed. "Eleanor's flood was just phase one. The real plan involves rebuilding the city from the ground up, with the Blackwoods controlling everything from water to power to housing."
She pulled out a gun and pointed it at Thomas. "But my dear nephew has been interfering. Trying to undo our work."
"Because it's wrong!" Thomas yelled. "People died!"
"Progress requires sacrifice," Victoria said coldly.
Valentina caught Thomas's eye again. He was working on something behind his back. She needed to keep Victoria talking.
"Why show yourself now?" she asked.
"Because Eleanor's death accelerated our timeline," Victoria stated. "And because you, Valentina Moretti, have become quite the nuisance."
While Victoria was focused on Valentina, Thomas managed to free one hand. He quietly passed something to Alessio.
"What about her?" Valentina nodded toward Sophia.
"My daughter never knew her real mother," Victoria said. "Eleanor was too busy with her schemes. I raised Sophia to be loyal to me."
Sophia finally spoke, her voice soft but steady. "You lied to me. You said my mother abandoned me."
Victoria turned. "I protected you."
"By making me hate her?" Sophia's eyes flashed with anger. "By using me to spy on Thomas?"
Chen stepped forward. "Victoria, we don't have time for this. The buyers are waiting for confirmation."
"Buyers?" Alessio asked.
"Foreign investors," Chen stated. "Ready to purchase the rebuilt sectors once the current residents are... relocated."
Victoria nodded. "Chen's right. It's time to finish this." She pointed the gun at Valentina. "You first. Then your brother."
"Wait!" Thomas yelled. "The files. I can tell you where they are."
Victoria paused. "What files?"
"Eleanor's contingency plans," Thomas said quickly. "The ones she kept from you. About the underwater infrastructure."
Victoria's eyes narrowed. "You're bluffing."
"Am I?" Thomas challenged. "Why do you think I came to the Morettis? I needed their help to access the sealed records."
Victoria paused, her gun still trained on Valentina.
In that moment, Sophia suddenly charged at Chen, grabbing his weapon. "Enough!" she cried.
Chaos occurred. Alessio broke free and attacked Victoria. The gun went flying. Valentina kicked her chair backward, breaking it against the floor, freeing herself from the bonds.
Gunshots rang out. Chen fired at Thomas, who dove behind a wall. Sophia returned fire, causing Chen to take cover.
Valentina scrambled for Victoria's dropped gun. She grabbed it just as Victoria broke away from Alessio and pulled a second weapon from her ankle holster.
"Stop!" Valentina yelled, aiming at Victoria. "It's over."
Victoria smiled coldly. "It's never over." She turned her gun toward Sophia instead. "Family first."
Before she could fire, Thomas threw himself in front of his cousin. The bullet hit him in the shoulder, sending him crashing to the floor.
"Thomas!" Sophia screamed.
Valentina didn't pause. She fired twice, hitting Victoria in the chest. The older woman stumbled backward, a look of surprise on her face, before collapsing.
Chen, seeing his boss fall, made a break for the exit. Alessio grabbed Chen's dropped gun and fired, hitting him in the leg. Chen went down, screaming in pain.
"The files," Chen gasped as Alessio stood over him. "They're real. The Architect isn't just Victoria."
"What do you mean?" Alessio asked.
Chen laughed through his pain. "There's a network. Powerful people. This is bigger than the Blackwoods."
Valentina ran to Thomas, who was bleeding badly. Sophia was already pushing her jacket against his wound.
"You saved me," Sophia said, tears in her eyes. "Why?"
"We're family," Thomas whispered softly. "The real kind."
Valentina helped Sophia apply pressure to the cut. "We need to get him to a hospital."
Sophia looked at Valentina with Eleanor's eyes, but they held none of her aunt's coldness. "Thank you for killing her. Victoria murdered my mother. Used me."
"How do you know?" Valentina asked.
"I found Eleanor's diaries," Sophia admitted. "She wasn't planning a flood. Victoria changed the plans, forced her to take the blame."
Before Valentina could reply, police sirens wailed in the distance.
"We need to go," Alessio urged, helping Rico to his feet. The man had finally regained awareness.
"Not without them," Valentina said firmly, pointing to Thomas and Sophia.
Alessio paused, then nodded. "Dante has a doctor on call. Let's move."
As they carried Thomas out, Chen called after them. "This isn't over, Moretti! The real Architect is still out there!"
Valentina paused at the door. "Who is it, Chen? Give me a name."
Chen's bloody smile chilled her to the bone. "Look closer to home. Someone you trust." His eyes flicked meaningfully toward Alessio. "Someone who's been playing you all along."
The sounds grew louder. They had to leave.
As they escaped into the night, Valentina couldn't stop Chen's words from echoing in her thoughts. She looked at her brother, helping Thomas into the car.
Could it be true? Could Alessio be The Architect?
And if he was, what would she do about it?
