Divided Loyalties
Divided Loyalties
Gunfire peppered the walls as Valentina raced through the burning house. She clutched the map and photo tightly, ducking low to escape the smoke. Behind her, she could hear Alessio shouting orders to flee.
A bullet whizzed past her ear. Too close.
She dove behind an overturned table just as Chen's men burst through the front door. Through the chaos, she spotted Thomas being pulled toward the wine cellar by Dante.
"Get him out of here!" she yelled to Dante, who nodded grimly.
For a split second, their eyes met across the room. Dante's face showed something she rarely saw - real fear. Not for himself, but for her brother. For Alessio.
Valentina fired three shots to cover them, then ran for the back exit. She had to reach that building - the one in the picture, the one her parents had found before their murder. Whatever secrets it held, she needed them now.
The cool night air hit her face as she burst outside, but she didn't stop running. Not when sirens wailed in the distance. Not when her lungs burned for air. She kept going until the house was far behind her, until she reached the abandoned subway entrance that would take her to the building from the map.
Hours later, Valentina huddled in a tiny room above a closed flower shop. It was one of her emergency hideouts, stocked with food and weapons. Her phone buzzed with a message from Alessio: "Everyone safe. Where are you?"
She typed back: "Following a lead. Trust no one." Then she turned her phone off.
The map lay spread before her. The building her parents had found was deep in Blackwood territory, in a part of town that had been mostly abandoned after the flood. Getting there wouldn't be easy, but she had no choice.
A soft knock on the door made her grab her gun. "Who is it?"
"It's me." Dante's voice was clear. "Alone."
She opened the door just enough to see his face, then let him in. "How did you find me?"
"I know all your hideouts," he said simply. "Your brother's worried sick."
"He should be worried about the Blackwood kid," Valentina snapped. "Where is he?"
"Safe house across town. Alessio is with him."
Valentina slammed her hand on the table. "I don't trust him! Why does Alessio?"
Dante sat heavily in the chair across from her. For once, the cool, confident mobster looked tired. "Because your brother sees himself in the boy. Someone trying to escape a family legacy."
"It's not the same," she maintained.
"Isn't it?" Dante asked softly. "The Blackwoods, the Morettis, the Russos - we're all just people trapped by our names."
Valentina looked away. She hated when Dante made sense. "What does Alessio plan to do with him?"
"Use his money and connections to rebuild. Form an alliance."
"An alliance with a Blackwood?" The very idea made her sick. "After everything Eleanor did?"
"That's why I'm here," Dante said, leaning forward. "I don't trust the kid either. But your brother won't listen to me about this."
Valentina stared at him. "Since when do you and I agree on anything?"
A ghost of a smile crossed Dante's face. "We agree on what matters most - keeping Alessio alive."
She couldn't argue with that. "So what do we do?"
"I dig into Thomas's past. You follow your lead about The Architect." Dante pointed to the map. "But not alone. I'm sending Rico with you."
"I work better alone."
"Not this time." Dante's voice toughened. "We almost lost you once. I won't let that happen again."
The words hung between them. Valentina remembered how Dante had pulled her from the burning building six months ago, saving her life even as she cursed him.
"Fine," she relented. "Rico can come. But we leave tonight."
Across town, Alessio poured Thomas a drink. They sat in the small living room of a safe place that few people knew about.
"Your sister hates me," Thomas said frankly.
"Valentina hates everyone at first," Alessio answered with a tired smile. "Give her time."
"We may not have time." Thomas pulled out his phone, showing Alessio a message. "This came right before the attack. It's from someone who worked with my aunt."
Alessio read it aloud: "The Architect moves tonight. The girl is the key."
"The girl," Alessio repeated. "Valentina?"
Thomas nodded. "I think so. That's what I was trying to tell her when the shooting started."
Alessio's phone rang. It was Dante.
"Val's following a lead about The Architect," Dante reported. "I'm sending Rico with her."
"Tell them to wait," Alessio ordered. "Thomas got a message - Valentina might be walking into a trap."
The line went quiet. Then Dante swore. "She turned her phone off. And Rico just texted - they're already on their way to the building."
Alessio stood up. "Send me the location. We're coming to you."
"No," Dante said strongly. "Stay with the kid. Keep him safe. I'll go after Val myself."
"Dante-"
"Trust me," Dante cut him off. "I'll bring her back."
Alessio paused, torn between protecting Thomas and saving his sister. Finally, he said, "Be careful."
"Always am, Viper." Dante hung up.
Thomas watched Alessio nervously. "What's happening?"
"My sister is walking into danger," Alessio said grimly. "And now I have to choose between helping her or protecting you."
"Then let me help," Thomas offered. "I know things about Eleanor's operations that nobody else does."
Alessio studied the young man's face. "Why would you betray your own family?"
"Eleanor wasn't family," Thomas said coldly. "She was a monster who happened to share my blood. The Blackwoods have caused enough pain."
Before Alessio could reply, the windows exploded inward. Smoke filled the room as armed figures in black rushed in.
"Blackwood!" one of them yelled, grabbing Thomas.
Alessio fired his gun, taking down two enemies before something struck him from behind. As darkness closed in, he heard Thomas scream his name.
The abandoned building stood before Valentina, its windows like dark, empty eyes. Rico stood beside her, scanning the perimeter.
"No guards," he whispered. "Seems too easy."
"It's not," Valentina answered. "Look." She pointed to fresh car tracks in the mud. "Someone's been here recently."
They crept inside, flashlights cutting through years of dust and rot. The building had once been a factory of some kind, with high ceilings and rusty machinery.
"Down there," Rico nodded toward a stairway. "That must lead to the sewers you mentioned."
As they descended, Valentina felt a rising sense of dread. The stairs led to a heavy metal door, surprisingly new compared to the rest of the house.
"Ready?" she asked.
Rico nodded, raising his gun.
Valentina pushed the door open, showing a clean, modern room filled with computers and maps. On the far wall hung a familiar sign - the same one Eleanor had used.
"The Architect," she whispered.
A phone on the desk suddenly rang, making them both jump. After three rings, it went to speaker.
"Hello, Valentina." The voice was distorted, hard to identify. "I've been waiting for you."
"Who are you?" she asked.
"A friend of your parents. And an enemy of the Blackwoods."
Rico moved toward one of the computers, but Valentina shook her head in warning.
"Why bring me here?" she asked.
"Because the boy is not what he seems." The voice paused. "Thomas Blackwood is Eleanor's son, not her nephew. And right now, he's with your brother."
Valentina felt the blood drain from her face. "You're lying."
"Check the files on the desk. DNA tests. Birth certificates. Eleanor hid him to protect him - her heir, meant to finish what she started."
With shaking hands, Valentina opened the box. The proof was there - photos of a younger Eleanor with a baby, documents with both their names.
"Alessio," she gasped, grabbing for her phone. But it was dead.
"You should hurry," the voice continued. "The Architect has already made their move."
"Who is The Architect?" Rico asked.
A frightening laugh came through the speaker. "Someone you both trust. Someone close to home."
The line went dead just as the door slammed shut behind them. A hissing sound filled the room, and green gas started pouring from vents in the ceiling.
"It's a trap!" Rico shouted, pulling his shirt over his mouth.
Valentina ran to the door, pulling on the handle. Locked. She fired at the lock, but the bullet just ricocheted off.
The gas was filling the room quickly. Her vision blurred as she tried to find another way out. Rico fell beside her, unconscious.
As darkness crept in from the edges of her vision, Valentina heard footsteps coming. The door swung open, and a familiar shape stepped through the gas.
"You?" she whispered in amazement, before everything went black.
