Chapter 49 Chapter 49
The pleading look in his eyes made me not to turn him away. I was still shocked seeing him at my door. Behind me Lina whispered.
"Ailsa...who is this?"
"I'll explain later" I swallowed hard.
"But....."
"Lina" I said quietly, forcing myself to remain calm.
"Please just go. I'll come to you later. And don't tell anybody about him" She looked between us, then nodded reluctantly.
"Be careful" she murmured before slipping out of the room.
I stepped aside and let Chase in, then quickly shut the door and locked it. My heart thumped loud that I was so sure he could hear it.
"What are you doing here Chase? Does Lucian know you are here?" I crossed my arms. He shook his head.
"No and he can't" My stomach tightened.
"Why? What's going on?"
He dragged his hand through his hair, pacing before turning to stare at me.
"I came to ask you to come back" His voice was low. I stared at him as if he'd grown another head.
"Have you suddenly gone mad? Absolutely not. I will never do such a thing" I said sharply.
"Ailsa...." his voice was pleading.
"No" I stepped back.
"I'm not going anywhere Lorean or that pack" He exhaled softly.
"This isn't about Lorcan. It's about the pack that you loved so much. The pack that once depended on you"
"They never depended on me" my voice sharpened “I was nothing there"
"That's not true. You were the only female beta the pack has ever had and you did great job when you were in charge”
"Saying this won't make me to come back" his jaw clenched.
"Lorcan is destroying the pack Ailsa. His choices are reckless. Tension is rising and we are loosing alliances. If something doesn't change soon...."
"That's not my problem anymore"
The words felt cold and sharp as they left my mouth.
“I left the pack and became a rogue, I cut ties with that pack. Now I'm part of another pack” He tried convincing me again.
"Ailsa…..please. You don't understand how dangerous things are becoming. I came because...."
"I don't care" He fell silent. I looked at him but he only stared at me, his expression tightened with some thing that came off as hurt.
"The pack needs saving" he said in a strained voice
"I doubt there's anything my presence would do. Lorcan already chose his path and I’ve moved on, I really do not want to have anything to do with that pack. Is this why you came to Lucian? I asked and he looked down and I that’s when I got the answer.
"You know what you are doing is risky Chase. If Lorcan finds out, he’ll be mad. You shouldn't bring your pack's problem here knowing the kind of relationship both packs have"
"And what about you? You came here knowing the kind of relationship they have" he accused.
"I came here as a rogue. I’m sure you know the meaning of a rogue. Lucian doesn't know the pack I came from and I want it to remain so"
"You've really made up your mind?” I nodded
"Now everything is beginning to make more sense to me. You are the rogue everyone's been talking about who. Lucian…..Is he your mate?”
I remained silent.
"You know you can't have two mates right?"
"I don’t have two mates. Lorcan is not my mate. What we had was an illusion, a childhood crush and I wanted it to be more or I thought it would be"
"Do you love him?" I froze. I knew who he asking about that.
That question was difficult to answer because I don't know my feelings about him right now. I looked up at him
"I don't know"
"He has not marked you yet so there's still a way for you to cut him off now he doesn't know where you came from" I shook my head.
"You're thinking only about yourself Chase,what about me?"
"I'm thinking about the pack, Ailsa and I know deep down you still care about the pack"
"So you're asking me to go back to Lorcan after his betrayal. You're asking me to forget the heartbreak I had to suffer through alone and come back. I'm sorry Chase I can't do that. Since you've told Lucian about what Lorcan plans to do. I'm sure he'll take care of it. Lucian is a good and string leader"
My wolf was surprised of how highly I spoke about Lucian. I was equally surprised myself. I had to give him his accolades because while he might be a jerk to me, he was an Alpha that anyone would be proud of.
"I don't know what I can say to convince you"
"I'm sorry Chase. There's nothing you'll say or do that'll make me come back. I can help secretly but coming back there is a no. But what exactly is happening?
"Lorcan is going to destroy packs if he is not stopped. He's waging war and he's also going to come for Lucian" I snapped my head up.
"What?"
"He's hungry for more power, Ailsa. He has become power greedy and that's why I'm pleading with you to come back and do something"
I looked away. I didn't want to feel pity for them but somehow my heart softened because that was once the place I called home but I couldn't leave here especially not now.
"I'm sorry Chase. I can't leave here. I belong here now"
"The Silver moon is where you belong"
"No, I don’t. Lorcan made that very clear when he choose my best friend over me and allowed me walk away” His face softened.
"That wasn't your fault"
"It was my fault for loving someone who didn't love me" I whispered
"I know you were hurt..."
"Hurt?" I choked on a laugh.
"I was broken and I had no one to talk to and that's why I decided to leave and never look back".
He looked away for a moment. When he spoke again, his voice held a low urgency.
"I looked for you. I didn't speak to Lorean for over a week. I was angry at him for letting you walk away without a fight and worst of all, I was more upset at Marie"
That was when I realized something.
"You knew about them right?"
"I couldn't tell you. I didn't want to hurt you" I nodded. It was pointless crying over spilt milk.
"But this isn't about Lorcan anymore. I had no plans of asking you to come back to him. He's taking the pack down with him. Lorcan is not capable of being alpha. If you come back it might ..."
"I'm not going" I cut him firmly. His shoulders slumped, for the first time, he looked defeated.
"Would you tell Lucian you are from the Silver moon pack"
"No" I said sharply.
"It's best he never finds out as I don't have any ties with them again.
"He'll be upset when he finds out. You know he didn't believe when I said I'd mistaken you for another person. He'll get curious and have someone look into your past and it won't be too long until he finds out"
I knew what Chase was saying made sense.
"You don't have to worry about me anymore. I'll deal with that when it happens. You have to leave now before someone sees you".
"Think...."
"Please..." I said shakily.
"Fine. I'll leave just the way I came"
"No" I stopped him quickly
I wasn't too comfortable with him passing the hallway without being seen.
"Go through the window. No one would see you"
He moved to the window and pulled the curtains aside. He paused and looked back at me.
"If you ever need my help, just send a message to me"
"I'll remember that"
He jumped out into the fading light and he was gone.
I breathed in relief.
That night I couldn't sleep. I thought about Chase's visit and what he said. How bad were things over there that he came to ask for my help? I saw the fear, in his eyes, Lorcan must have done something so bad or about to do it.
I knew how reckless he could be and as for his plans to attack Lucian. I would never let that happen. I would fight tooth and nail, if he ever tried to hurt Lucian.
I hated how my past was coming back to me. I thought it would remain as it was. The memory of his rejection hit me. Luckily, it didn't hurt so much when I thought of it. My wolf nudged me gently.
"Fresh air" I sighed
"Maybe that will help"
I stepped into the hallway,the building quiet at this hour. Only few light flickered as I walked towards the courtyard. The cool night air brushed against my skin .
I inhaled deeply closing my eyes for a moment. I felt a presence and my heart stopped. I turned around and Lucian was standing there in all his glory.
His eyes were burning into mine.
"Ailsa" His voice was low and rough.
Oh! how I had missed that voice, my wolf jumped in excitement, he took a step forward and I swallowed hard.
"What do you want?" His jaw flexed.
"We need to talk"
