Ready for he last combat
Melissa’s POV
Tension was in the air as I stood in the middle of the pack's meeting room. I saw a mixture of fear and resolve on the faces in front of me. They looked to me for support because these were my people, my family.
I inhaled deeply before moving forward. "Everyone," I said, maintaining my composure in the face of my emotional storm, "we are up against a war unlike any we have ever faced. Despite being driven to the brink by the Void, we remain upright. And we are invincible as long as we remain united.
The crowd echoed with a murmur. A few nodded, determination stiffening their faces. Others held on to one another, leaning on their loved ones for support.
"We have experienced loss," I added, raising my voice. "We have experienced suffering. However, we have also triumphed. We have risen stronger each time the Void has attempted to shatter us. Nothing will be different this time.
Damon moved to stand next to me, his presence like a constant flame amidst the confusion. With a slight gesture of encouragement, he put a hand on my shoulder.
I glanced around, looking into each pack member's eyes. I remarked, "I know the odds seem impossible." "I understand how unending the shadows seem. However, we are not battling in isolation. We have hope, something the Void will never comprehend, and we have each other.
In the gathering, a young wolf held up his hand. "How about if we lose? With a quivering voice, he inquired.
I approached him and knelt at his level. "What's your name?"
"Eli," he murmured.
With a gentle smile, I put a hand on his shoulder. "Eli, there is no way to lose. Not when we have individuals like you ready to take a stand. You underestimate your bravery.
He straightened his back and his eyes grew wide. "I will fight," he declared resolutely.
Cheers broke out in the room as the atmosphere changed from one of fear to one of resolve. With pride in my heart, I stood up once more.
"Get ready," I urged, my voice rising above the din. "Make your weapons sharp. Make your ties stronger. We fight together.
Damon turned to face me as the throng started to thin out. "That was impressive," he murmured.
I smiled a little at him. It must have been. They are worthy of optimism, even if
Unable to complete the notion, I trailed off. Even if I die.
Later, I was looking out at the forest from the main house's balcony. The trees were bathed in a silvery glow as the moon hung low in the sky.
Damon's voice cut through the silence, "Melissa."
He was standing behind me when I turned around, his face unreadable. "Damon, what is it?"
He took a step toward me and looked into my eyes. "I am aware of your plans."
I tensed up, gasping for air. "I have no idea what you're discussing."
"Yes, you do," he responded in a stern yet painful voice. "You intend to give your life to halt the Void."
I grabbed the balcony rail and turned away. "It's the only option," I muttered.
"No, it's not," he answered, taking a step forward. "There must be an alternative. Together, we will locate it.
With tears hurting my eyes, I shook my head. "You don't get it, Damon. I'm now bound to the Void. Everything will be destroyed if I don't put an end to this. I can't allow that to occur.
"I also can't let you go! His voice broke as he yelled.
The anguish in his eyes made my heart ache as I turned to face him. "You will not lose me," I whispered. "Not at all. I will always be by your side.
"That's not enough," he cried, reaching for me with shaking hands. "Please, Melissa. There must be an alternative. Without you, I couldn't do this.
Something inside of me was broken by his words, and I leaned against him before I could stop myself. He encircled me with his arms as if I were the only thing supporting him.
I said, my voice muffled against his chest, "I'm scared too." However, I must be strong. For the group. For you.
He stepped back just far enough to meet my gaze. "You're not by yourself. We deal with whatever comes up jointly.
With a tear streaming down my cheek, I nodded. I muttered, "Together."
He cupped my face and kissed me before I could respond. It was frantic and brimming with all the feelings we were unable to articulate.
He pressed his forehead to mine as we eventually separated. "Make me a promise," he said. "Assure me that you will fight to return."
I answered, "I promise," but we both understood that I might not be able to follow through on it.
The moment was broken by the distant howls, which brought us back to the present.
"The shadows," Damon murmured in a strained tone.
I responded, "They're testing our defences," as I stood up straight and my light flared around me. "It is beginning."
Then, with the weight of what lay ahead bearing down on us both, we hurried inside to get ready.
As we stood at the boundary of the pack's area, the sky darkened strangely. The rustle of leaves and the murmurs of the wind had previously filled the woodland, but now it appeared to pause its breath.
Despite my racing heart, I said, "They're coming," in a firm voice.
Damon was standing next to me, his jaw tight. "Take your places, everyone! His Alpha power rolled through the pack as he shouted. As they readied themselves for combat, wolves moved, their bodies merging into the forest shadows.
I concentrated on the light inside of me and allowed it to rise until it filled my body with a gentle, golden brightness. I could sense that the Void was trying to gradually erode my strength, but the shadows were afraid of my brightness.
Through the woods came a deep snarl. Then another.
I muttered, "They're here."
The treeline was breached by the first wave of shadow creatures. They were hideous, skeletal, twisted creatures with red eyes that glowed. They moved erratically, unnaturally, like puppets under the influence of an invisible power.
"Remain calm! Damon let out a yell.
The troop charged ahead, confronting the darkness. The air was filled with snarls and the clang of claws. As I entered the battle and targeted the biggest of the animals, my light pulsed.
“Behind you, Melissa! Someone yelled.
Just as a shadow lunged at me, I whirled around, my light blazing. It retreated into the shadows, hissing, but more replaced it.
"Remain concentrated! Damon called, his voice piercing the commotion.
In the distance, I could see him engaged in a fierce battle that left me speechless. Even though he was a flurry of strength and accuracy, he was not able to be everywhere at once.
The darkness appeared to go on forever. No matter how many we removed, others continued to appear. I could feel my power ebbing away from the frequent usage of my light.
A shadow slipped past my defences and began raking its claws across my skin, causing a stinging agony to pierce my side. I stumbled backwards and screamed.
"Hey, Melissa! In an instant, Damon was by my side, his worried eyes ablaze.
I forced myself to stand and gritted my teeth, saying, "I'm fine." The shadow that had hit me was burned away by the blaze of my light.
However, as the battle continued, I came to a realization. The shadows had no intention of winning. They were examining our vulnerabilities and testing us.
I remarked, my voice scarcely audible above the din, "They're stalling."
"What? Damon narrowed his brows and asked.
"Winning is not their goal. While the Void gets ready for something more significant, they are keeping us occupied.
Damon's face grew serious. "So, we must put an end to this right away."
I redoubled my efforts and poured all of my light into one explosion. The shadows screamed and crumbled beneath its power.
The eerie sensation in my chest persisted even after the woods became quiet again.
"This was just the start," I responded, my voice shaking.
I sensed an odd pull in the back of my consciousness as the pack regrouped. At first, I couldn't quite make it out; it was like a whisper.
Melissa? Damon's voice interrupted my train of thought.
With a furrowed brow, I murmured, "I... I feel something."
"How do you feel? With his hand on my arm, he inquired.
"I'm not sure. It seems to be beckoning to me.
The ground shook beneath us before I could say anything more. The air was filled with a low, sinister hum that became louder by the moment.
"What's going on? Someone yelled.
Then I noticed it. Amid the forest, a rift appeared in the very fabric of reality itself, glimmering with evil energy. I could sense the chilly, oppressive, and all-consuming presence of the Void emanating from it.
"No," I muttered with a heavy heart.
Damon took a defensive stance and moved in front of me. "Remain back," he replied firmly.
However, I was immobile. My light was responding to the tear, flashing and throbbing as though it were being pulled in its direction.
The hum intensified, and before I could comprehend what was happening, a dark tendril sprang from the tear and encircled Damon.
"Damon! I ran at him and screamed.
"Don't, Melissa! It was too late when he yelled.
His body struggled against the tendril as it dragged him toward the tear. With my flame burning in desperation, I seized his hand.
"I will not let you leave! I sobbed, tears running down my cheeks.
"You must let me go, Melissa! With a broken voice, he said. "Preserve the pack!"
"I am unable to! I cried while clinging to what little I had left.
The Void, however, was more powerful. I gave Damon one last tug, and he was torn from me and vanished into the night.
"No! As the tear closed and nothing but quiet remained behind, I shouted and fell to the ground.
With pale faces from astonishment and dread, the pack clustered around me.
"Now what do we do? Someone inquired.
My light was weak and flickering as I looked up.
"We fight," I answered, trembling. "This is over. For Damon.
My words' resolution didn't match the emptiness in my chest.
But I knew the truth in my heart. Damon has been snatched by the Void, and I might not see him again if I don't stop it right away.
I could hear the voice of the Void in my head as the pack turned to face the last battle.
It mumbled, "Come to me, Mel
issa. "You are aware of what you need to do."
I clenched my fists and let the tears fall down my cheeks.
I returned the whisper, "I'll come." "But I'm taking your demise with me."
