Dwelling in the darkness
Dwelling in the darkness
Melissa’s POV
The atmosphere surrounding the Void was chilly and heavy as if all hope and warmth had been sucked out. I held the relic in my shaking hands as I stood at its brink. There was a slight pulse across its surface as if it could sense the danger.
The pack gathered in uncomfortable quiet behind me. None of them dared to speak, but their anxious gazes pierced my back. They were all aware of what I was going to do.
Elena begged, "Melissa, you don't have to do this," her voice cracking.
My heart felt like it was breaking, but I forced a tiny grin as I turned to face her and the others. "Yes, Elena, I do. There's Damon. And none of us will live if I don't put an end to the Void right away.
Marcus, Damon's beta, came forward. Raw terror had taken the place of his normally composed manner. "There must be another way, Melissa. Let's engage in combat!"
Holding the artefact closer, I shook my head. "This is not your battle. I'm wanted by the Void. I've always been the one.
Elena's eyes filled with tears. "You don't have to work alone on this. Our Luna is you. No matter what, you have our support.
I was touched by their commitment, but it didn't alter the reality. "You'll have to take charge if I don't return. Keep them safe. Make sure they are safe.
Elena gave a fierce shake of her head. "Stop speaking that way! Melissa, you're coming back. You must.
I swallowed hard, my throat tight with emotion. Turning back to the swirling darkness of the Void, I straightened my shoulders. “If I don’t come back, tell Damon… I did this for him. For all of you.”
The Void seemed to call to me, its dark energy tugging at my soul. I inhaled deeply before moving forward.
"No! Marcus yelled and grabbed for me, but I had already moved into the shadows.
I was encircled by the whirling blackness, which was oppressively cold. It was like entering a different universe, one that was inaccessible to light.
Elena's voice resonated softly behind me. "Hey, Melissa! Return!"
I didn't turn around. I was unable to.
The silence was deafening inside the Void. No warmth, no sound, no sense of space or time. A never-ending blackness encroaching on every side.
"Damon?” I called, my voice trembling. The sound was twisted into a melancholic echo by the Void, which devoured it.
A dim, far-off light flared ahead. I approached it, holding on to the relic as if it were my lifeblood.
“Melissa…” a chilly, quiet voice murmured.
I went cold. The voice was familiar—Damon’s.
"Damon?” I whispered, my heart leaping with hope.
The light became brighter, revealing a terrifying vision. Bloodied and broken, Damon lay on the ground, staring at me with lifeless eyes.
"No! I sobbed and fell to my knees next to him.
The Void, whose voice was suddenly all around me, murmured, "You let him die because you failed him."
“This isn’t real,” I murmured, shaking my head. “This is just another one of your tricks.”
The vision of Damon evaporated, replaced by another. The pack’s territory was in ruins, the wolves lying lifeless in the embers.
“You couldn’t save them either,” the Void whispered. “Everything you touch turns to dust.”
"No! I shouted and gripped the relic even more tightly. "You're telling lies!"
The icy, derisive laughter of the Void reverberated all around me. "Am I? Or do you refuse to see this truth?"
With tears running down my cheeks, I collapsed to my knees. I was in danger of being crushed by the weight of my uncertainties and concerns.
However, I then thought about Damon's face and how, despite the odds being against us, he had always looked at me with unshakable trust.
I steadied my voice and responded, "No." "You're not correct. You don't frighten me.
The Void paused in his laughter.
I stood up and held the relic aloft. The visions were forced to fade as its light pierced the darkness.
With a determined tone, I responded, "I'm coming for you, Damon."
As the Void's rage grew, the darkness shuddered. "Melissa, you are not winning. You will just end up ruining yourself.
I didn't pay attention. Following the dim light that led me farther into the Void, I pushed forward.
I didn't want to stop, even though every step felt heavier than the last.
"Damon, hold on," I muttered. "I'll be there."
The blackness appeared to go on forever. I felt as though I was being pulled further and deeper into the depths of misery with every step I made. My pulse thumping in my chest, I watched the dim flicker of light ahead as it got stronger.
"Damon? I yelled once more, this time more loudly and with a shaking voice.
A shadowy figure was suddenly lit by the light. I gasped as I approached, and there he was, Damon, slumped against a rough obsidian wall, bound. His body was feeble, his head fell low, and his once-bright energy had now faded.
"Damon! I dropped to my knees and ran to him. "That's me, Melissa. I'm present.
The tiniest smile appeared on his lips as his eyes opened. "You shouldn't have come, Melissa."
I groped for the chains that bound him, tears stinging my eyes. My skin crawled as it burned with a sinister intensity. “I couldn’t leave you here. We’re getting out together.”
“Foolish girl,” a cold, taunting voice boomed around us. The Void’s presence filled the air, suffocating and relentless. “Do you think you can take him from me?"
I yelled, "Watch me," gripping the chains with shaking fists. In response to the presence of the Void, the item in my other hand started to light. "He is not your property."
A terrifying sound reverberated across the darkness as the Void chuckled. "I'll grant you that—you're brave. But in this case, bravery won't save you.
Damon muttered, his voice faint. “Melissa, you… you have to leave. It's too risky.
My heart ached to see him thus exposed, so I firmly responded, "I'm not leaving without you." "Damon, you are mine, and I will not allow the Void to take you away."
I rubbed the item against the chains as it began to pulse brighter. As the power that held him waned, they hissed and sizzled, raising dark smoke. The whole realm shuddered as the Void let out an angry cry.
Do you dare to disobey me? It roared, causing the ground underneath us to tremble.
I clenched my jaw and poured all of my force into the relic. The chains splintered and cracked. As the final link broke, Damon's body sagged forward into my arms.
I muttered, "Got you," while embracing him. "You're secure now."
However, the blackness surrounding us started to change as I turned to go, growing into something enormous and ominous.
After swirling and rising until they assumed shape, the shadows congregated in one place. The image appeared, a tall, hideous creature with flaming red eyes and dark tendrils wrapping around it like living smoke, and my breath caught as it did. The actual form of the Void.
With a voice that echoed through my bones, it roared, "You are too late, Melissa." "This is my territory. Here, you can't win.
I held Damon tight and refused to back down. "I don't give a damn about how strong you believe you are. I will not give up.
The Void laughed ominously, its monstrous shape approaching. "Your light is powerful, but it doesn't last long. In a sea of darkness, you are but a speck of defiance.
I carefully placed Damon down and took a position facing him while holding the item firmly. Its brightness pushed back against the suffocating blackness as it surged in my hand. I glared up at the Void and said, "You talk too much." "Come get me if you want me."
The light from the item blazed, repelling the tendrils of the Void. "Girl, you are obstinate. However, even the brightest light can go out.
"Not this one," I gritted my teeth and murmured. The artefact responded to my resolve by becoming brighter. "As long as I'm alive, you won't prevail."
This time the Void's laughter was louder. Its huge body towered over us, its red eyes blazing with rage. "Then let's see how long you can stand."
Damon awoke abruptly behind me and muttered, "Melissa…" in a barely discernible voice. "Take caution."
I fixed my gaze on the Void and dared not turn around. I muttered, "I've got this," despite my hands being a little unsteady.
With its darkness churning like a storm, the Void lifted a huge arm. Melissa, your end is here. And your world, your hope, and your cherished pack will all fall with you.
As the shadows drew closer, I gripped the relic tighter, my heart racing. "Not today."
As it struck, the tendrils of darkness surged toward us like a tidal wave, and the sound of the Void's laughing reverberated.
The shadows were pushed aside as the relic burst into dazzling brightness. However, the Void remained unmoved as the light faded, its imposing shape still present.
With a voice that echoed with ruthless confidence, it proclaimed, "You cannot stop me, Melissa." You're too late, even with your light. I shall own this world.
From behind me, Damon's frail voice yelled, "Melissa... what do we do now?"
I stared at the Void's unwavering presence, my mind racing, and I didn't respond. I was holding an artefact that was flashing and losing power.
The Void growled, its crimson eyes meeting mine, "Melissa." "If you give up now, I might spare him."
My breath caught, and I turned to face Damon, who had terror in his eyes but also faith in them.
The laughter of the Void increased in volume. Make a choice, Melissa. Either give in and save him, or fight and lose everything.
"I'll
never let you win," I muttered, clenching the relic as my heart raced.
However, scepticism started to seep in. How could I beat such a strong thing?
